Stevens Transport Trucking School Review – Company Paid CDL Training

Stevens Transport Reviews

Based in Dallas, Texas, Stevens Transport is the fourth largest temperature controlled trucking company in the U.S. Stevens Transport has been in the trucking business since 1980, growing to over 3,000 employees over the last 36 years.

Financially secure and privately owned, Stevens Transport has grown to be one of the best trucking companies to work for in recent years. Not only do they provide their drivers with the best late-model equipment on the road, they haven’t had a single layoff in over 31 years.

Stevens trucking company helps get students ready for life on the road and jumpstarts their career by helping them get their company paid CDL training in as little as 17 days at company sponsored truck driving schools.

Stevens Transport has training academies located in the following cities:

  • Dallas, Texas
  • Houston, Texas
  • Fort Hood, Texas
  • Denver, Colorado
  • Atlanta, Georgia
  • Columbus, Georgia
  • Fayetteville, North Carolina
  • Fort Bragg, North Carolina
  • Tampa, Florida
  • Knoxville, Tennessee

The Stevens Driving Academy in Dallas is located on a 75 acre spread, while all their other driving academies are contracted through private truck driving schools. The Dallas academy has been approved by the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC).

When it comes to company paid CDL training, Stevens Transport is very flexible. You can either choose tuition-free employer-based training at the Stevens Training Academy, or you can choose your own truck driving school and get reimbursed for the training costs by driving for Stevens Transport until your loan has been paid back through weekly payroll deductions.

While most trucking companies require you to drive for 1 year to pay back the cost of your truck driver training, it has come to our attention that this is not necessarily the case with Stevens trucking company. You may be required to drive for Stevens Transport for up to 3 years in order to have the full cost of your training reimbursed. The 1 year driving commitment with Stevens only ensures that your loan will continue to be financed through Stevens Transport.

If you choose to train for free at the Stevens Transport school, here’s what you can expect:

  • You won’t have to put up any “up-front” money for transportation, lodging, and meals.
  • You’ll be given an interest-free loan to pay for almost all of your personal expenses which includes meals, lodging, and transportation to and from the school.
  • You will have to pay a $100 registration fee (non-refundable) and $70 for licensing.
  • Your training at the academy will last for 3 weeks with 1 day off each week.
  • You’ll have a minimum of 40 hours of classroom instruction, but this varies with each student.
  • The ratio of students to instructor is usually 4:1.
  • You’ll share 1 truck with 4 other students.
  • During the driving portion of your training, half that time will be spent on backing skills.
  • You will train on the same equipment you’ll be driving later as an employee.
  • You’ll be familiar with the Stevens trucking company terms and standards by the time you start driving.
  • You’ll be training at a nationally recognized academy that’s known to be one of the best.
  • You’ll receive guaranteed financing as long as you are employable.
  • You won’t have to undergo any credit checks.
  • You’ll be able to choose from several training locations throughout the U.S.
  • You’ll have housing available at each training location.
  • You’ll have to pay back the interest-free loan through payroll deductions at $27/week.
  • You’ll have to pay back any personal expenses through payroll deductions at $25/week.

If, on the other hand, you’d rather train at a truck driving school of your own choice, you’ll be given an interest-free loan in the amount of $4200 to pay for tuition and other school-related expenses.

Stevens Transport has one stipulation that you must adhere to when choosing your own truck driving school. The trucking school that you choose to train at must meet the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) minimum training requirement of at least 120 hours of truck driver training.

Once you graduate from Stevens Transport School, you will then go through an abbreviated orientation program at the Stevens Transport headquarters in Dallas, TX. After you complete the orientation program, you’ll then be hired by the Stevens trucking company and your over-the-road (OTR) training begins.

Lasting 8 weeks in length, a dedicated and highly knowledgeable mentor will ride with you, guiding and instructing you on various loads. Only one student (you) will be assigned per truck. During the 8-week OTR training period, Stevens Transport will pay you a salary of $350 per week. You can request a personal trainer who does not smoke, if you wish.

Once you successfully complete the over-the-road training, Stevens trucking company will assign you your very own late-model truck which you will share with no one (no slip-seating). It’s at this time that you will embark on your own exciting solo runs, accumulating generous mileage pay and partaking in some great bonus programs.
