What are the Requirements for Company Paid CDL Training?

Swift – Company Paid CDL Training

Swift is a highly recognized name in the world of truck driving and they provide some of the best company paid CDL training around.  Students can choose to train from several locations around the United States, including Arizona, Idaho, Tennessee, Texas, or Virginia. Every CDL training location offers in-class and behind-the-wheel training that is certified by the Professional Truck Driver Institute (PTDI), assuring that you’ll get the highest quality truck driver training possible.

Tuition for the CDL training course is $3,900 and students are required to pay a $150 seating fee which is due on the first day of class.

This comprehensive paid CDL training course provides students with financing for student housing (2 to 5 students per room), bus transportation, and will reimburse the whole $3,900 cost after you have worked for them for 26 months.

Students can either pay the whole $3,900 tuition up front or they can finance it through Swift with interest-free financing. Any student that chooses to finance the tuition through Swift will have $150 deducted from their paycheck each week for 13 months. Once the 13 months is up and the full cost of the tuition has been paid back, Swift will then add an additional $150 to the employee’s paycheck each week for the next 13 months.

Stay with Swift for the full 26-month period and the CDL training program will cost you absolutely nothing. However, any driver that leaves Swift before the first 13-month period is up, will owe Swift $300 for every remaining month of the 13-month period.

Swift has both a two-week course and a three-week course. During the first week of the two-week course, students participate in online training from home, studying for the CDL written tests. Once a student successfully passes the CDL written exams, they will then be required to report to the Swift training academy.

During the first week of the three-week course, students do not arrive at the Swift training academy with a commercial learner’s permit (CLP), and do not study online at home. Instead, they study and take their CDL written tests during the first week of instruction at the training academy. The last two weeks are exactly the same as the two-week course.

At the Swift training academy, students will go through 2 weeks of combined classroom instruction and driving range practice, learning backing maneuvers and driving techniques. Four days are usually spent inside the classroom, while the remainder of the week is spent training on the driving range. Please keep in mind that these are not 8-hour days but, rather, 11-hour days, 6 days a week, from 5 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Once you graduate from Stevens Training Academy, you will then go through an abbreviated orientation program at the Stevens Transport headquarters in Dallas, TX. After you complete the orientation program, you’ll then be hired by Stevens Transport and your over-the-road (OTR) training begins.

Lasting 8 weeks in length, a dedicated and highly knowledgeable mentor will ride with you, guiding and instructing you on various loads. Only one student (you) will be assigned per truck. During the 8-week OTR training period, Stevens will pay you a salary of $350 per week. You can request a personal trainer who does not smoke, if you wish.

Once you successfully complete the over-the-road training, Stevens Transport will assign you your very own late-model truck which you will share with no one (no slip-seating). It’s at this time that you will embark on your own exciting solo runs, accumulating generous mileage pay and partaking in some great bonus programs.

CRST International – Company Paid CDL Training

If you are worried about credit checks in order to secure qualifying for any of the company sponsored truck driving schools, you don’t have to worry. CRST International offers company paid CDL training for anyone who has a clean driving, work, and criminal history.

CRST offers to pay your CDL training tuition cost in return for a 10-month commitment, making it a quick and easy experience on your way to your shining truck-driving career. In just 2 to 4 weeks, you can obtain your Class A commercial driver’s license (CDL) and be on the road making good money.

The company paid CDL training program is contracted through Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and typically lasts anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks depending upon the student. In that time, you can expect to train for 8 to 12 hours a day, 7 days a week through a combination of classroom instruction and drive training. If that sounds like a grueling schedule, just remember, you’re not paying any tuition costs.

CSRT also offers a company sponsored truck driving school program in which any applicant who qualifies can choose to enroll in any of CSRT’s 30 approved truck driving schools nationwide. CSRT will sponsor you and pay your school tuition up-front, payroll deducting the amount at $40 per week after you’re hired on as a CSRT driver.

If you choose to be sponsored at a CSRT approved school, here’s what you can expect:

  • Depending on which school you attend, your CDL training will last approximately 2-4 weeks.
  • 20% of your CDL training will be in the classroom and 80% will be behind the wheel of a truck.
  • All state minimum CDL training requirements will be met, both in the classroom and in the truck.
  • On average, there will be no more than 4 students per truck but, this will vary by school.
  • You can expect to be very busy on a full-time schedule, Mon – Fri, maybe even Sat and Sun.
  • Some of the approved schools also offer part-time paid CDL training on the weekends/evenings.
  • If you are attending school out-of-state, you must transfer your license to that state.

What you’ll need:

  • While breakfast and lunch are provided Mon-Fri, you’ll need money for meals on weekends.
  • Money for miscellaneous expenses.
  • Toiletries including soap, shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste, tooth brush, towels, a shaver, etc.
  • 7 days worth of clean clothes (jeans, sweats, short and long sleeve shirts, winter gear if needed).
  • Hat, sunglasses, work gloves, sun block if needed.
  • Work boots (must be no-slip. Absolutely no cowboy boots allowed).
  • A battery powered alarm clock.
  • Flashlight and batteries.
  • Notebook, pen, pencil, and paper.
  • Sleeping and a pillow or twin-sized sheets and blankets for the truck.
  • Any medication or medical items such as eyeglasses, contacts, inhaler, CPAP machine, etc.
  • A Rand-McNally road atlas, truck stop guide & calculator (available from CSRT for $28).

Once you graduate from the program, you’ll enter the four-day orientation program to help prepare you for your training on the road. Then, once you’re finished with the orientation program, CSRT will match you up with a lead driver so you can receive one-on-one OTR training on the open road for 28 days. During your OTR training, you’ll be required to complete a minimum of 14,000 combined miles (between you and your trainer).

At first, your truck will be dispatched as a solo operation but, after 4-7 days, you and your personal trainer will operate as a team.

  • You’ll get paid at 22 cents per mile split pay during your first 28 days (with the trainer).
  • During months 1 and 2 as a full-time driver, you’ll receive 25 cents per mile split pay.
  • During months 3 thru 5, you’ll receive 26 cents per mile split pay.
  • During months 6 thru 11, you’ll receive 33 cents per mile split pay.
  • Any student who pays for their tuition up-front will start out at a higher pay rate.

Typically, trucking companies require at least a year commitment, so if you are someone who is looking for a short-term investment of your time for free training, CRST International may be a good option for you.

Knight Transportation – Company Paid CDL Training

Knight Transportation helps students to be able to meet their qualifications for company paid CDL training at one of the best company sponsored truck driving schools around by walking them through the process. Trainers are hand-selected, equipped with vast industry knowledge and first-hand expertise, in order to provide students with the best training possible, preparing them for the long road ahead.

Students must first go to a local Knight Transportation terminal and begin the application process with the help of a Knight recruiter. Students will be required to pass the CDL written exam, possess a commercial learner’s permit (CLP) from their home state, and pass the CDL skills test before they can begin their driver training. Training generally begins within 1 week of meeting the preceding qualifications.

One unique aspect of Knight Transportation is that they won’t require you to sign any contracts prior to the start of their commercial driver’s license (CDL) program. Students are required to report to Knight’s Phoenix terminal to begin training. While the paid CDL training program is only 2 to 3 weeks in length, students are required to provide their own transportation to and from the terminal, as well as their own lodging. Knight Transportation does provide students with a $400 trainee salary each week to help pay for meals and other expenses.

After students complete the CDL course, they then become what Knight calls “Squires”. Squires begin their over-the-road training with a certified trainer in their region. It is at this time that students receive one-on-one training behind the wheel of a semi, receiving real-world driving experience. Students will also obtain important non-driving skills as well. Squire training lasts approximately 4 to 6 weeks with 2 or 3 home breaks in between.

Once Squires pass the state CDL skills test and road test, acquiring an average score of 80 or better, they can then move onto the solo driving portion of their CDL training. These students receive a certificate of completion upon graduation.

All in all, the entire CDL training process can be expected to take up to 9 weeks. That doesn’t include the solo driving portion, which is expected to take students anywhere from 4 to 5 months to complete. While students are running freight on their own during this time, they are monitored closely by their managers to ensure that their runs are both safe and successful.

Once a student has accumulated 30,000 over-the-road miles of behind-the-wheel driving time, that student then graduates from the program and immediately begins their career as a Knight Driving Associate (KDA). Knight Transportation then provides you with a profitable job, which you must commit to for at least 1 year.

Millis Training Institute – Company Paid CDL Training

The Millis Training Institute was established in Kennesaw, Georgia in 1989. The institute was created to provide students with the necessary tools needed for a successful career in the trucking industry. MTI believes that every person who enters the program should be able to further their career while they provide for themselves and their families. Today, MTI has five training locations in Ohio, Wisconsin, Georgia, Texas, and North Carolina.

At MTI, you can expect to be trained in small group classes, only 6 students per class, 3 to a truck. This means you’ll get personalized attention, and more one-on-one time with the instructors, which is important when trying to learn the skills you need to become a highly qualified truck driver. New classes start every Monday and are on a first-come, first-serve basis.

When you are accepted into the program, you can expect to receive up to $2000 to cover your training costs. Please be aware that you will be required to pay $500 up front as soon as you enter the program. After graduating, Millis will hire you as a driver and deduct $30 from your paycheck each week for the next 18 months in order to reimburse the full cost of the loan.

Of course, if you leave Millis any time within that 18-month period, you will be expected to pay back the balance of the loan. If that happens, don’t worry. Millis will offer you a structured monthly payment plan to help you pay off your loan.

Now, if you choose to pay for the program with your own money, MTI will only charge you $2,340 up front. This is actually a great deal when you compare it to some of the other company paid CDL training programs that charge you as much as $3000 to $5000 for the same amount of training.

The training lasts approximately 21 days on site, followed by 7 to 21 days of range/road training. Once you obtain your commercial driver’s license (CDL), you will then go through an additional 3 to 5 weeks of training on the road with a company trainer, driving a minimum of 15,000 miles. Finally, you’ll undergo 3 days of Company Orientation.

Please note that, before you arrive at the school, you must already have passed the CDL written exams and obtained your commercial leaner’s permit (CLP).

Week 1

During week 1, you’ll spend all your time in the classroom, approximately 40 to 60 total hours. Classes are held Monday through Friday for 8 to 10 hours each day/night. If you think this schedule sounds tough, please be aware that some company paid CDL training programs make you train for 12 to 16 hours a day, six days a week.

During the first week of training, you’ll learn about trip planning and map reading, inspecting your vehicle, control systems, hours of service, range driving, coupling and uncoupling, and finally, you’ll receive a full overview of the entire trucking industry.

In total, you’ll receive 166 hours of schooling, which is more than the state minimum. What makes that 166 hours so impactful is that you’re getting more personalized instruction with the trainer than you would at some of the other company paid CDL training programs because of the smaller class sizes.

Week 2

Week 2 consists of more classroom instruction and training on the driving range. You’ll spend only one day in class, about 8 to 10 hours, and 4 days in the truck, both on the range and on the road, approximately 40 hours total. You’ll share one truck with two other students during this time.

Week 3

During the third week of the program you’ll spend all your time driving on the road with the instructor, one-on-one, practicing safe driving habits. You will accumulate 15,000 miles on the road with a company trainer, dispatching freight, before driving through your home state in order to take your state CDL exams and, therefore, finish the CDL training process. It’s during this phase of your CDL training that you’ll begin to make some money.

During the road training phase of your CDL training you can expect to earn $72 per day for the first 3 weeks. During weeks 4 and 5 you’ll earn $78 per day. Finally, during the 6th and final week you’ll earn $86 per day.

While the road training portion of the program is normally 6 weeks long, that duration of time may be shorter or longer, based on your own individual performance.

Week 4

During the last week of training, you’ll undergo 3 days of Company Orientation before officially being hired by Millis and driving your own Millis truck.

C.R. England – Company Paid CDL Training

Some trucking companies are more generous than others in what they promise to provide for you. C.R. England is one of them.

Founded in England in 1920, C.R. England has grown into one of the largest refrigerated carriers in the nation. With over 3500 trucks, 5600 trailers, 4600 qualified truck drivers, and an additional 1000 non-driving employees, C.R. England has become one of the most recognizable trucking companies in the industry. Not only has C.R. England been in business successfully for over 90 years, they have been family owned and operated for 4 generations. Currently, they are based out of Salt Lake City, Utah.

The nice thing about C.R. England’s company paid training program is that there are plenty of locations to choose from… 25 to be exact. You have the choice of either going to one of C.R. England’s network schools or going to one of their Premiere Truck Driving Schools. Plus, your lodging will be provided for as part of the tuition cost.

C.R. England’s Company Sponsored CDL School Schedule

Week 1

Once you’re accepted into C.R. England’s company sponsored CDL school, you can expect to be there for 15 to 20 days, depending on which school you attend, of course. During the first week of school, you’ll spend all your time in the classroom, meeting your instructor and learning about the individual components of a tractor-trailer, truck systems, FMCSA safety regulations, state commercial driving laws, proper logging procedures, and more. Expect a minimum of 40 hours of classroom time (8 hours per day, 5 days a week).

Many company sponsored truck driving schools prefer that you obtain your commercial learner’s permit (CLP) in your home state before arriving at school. This is where C.R. England differs from most trucking companies when it comes to paid CDL training. They prefer that you obtain your CLP while you are in school.

You should be prepared to do homework assignments throughout the entire first week of the course. This will help prepare you for the CDL written exam which you will be required to pass in order to obtain your commercial learner’s permit (CLP). Once you obtain your CLP, you’ll then spend most of your time training on the lot, with a little bit of classroom training mixed in.

Week 2

On the training lot, you’ll share a truck with 4 to 6 other students and start training behind the wheel under the guidance of your instructor. You’ll practice the following:

  • Climbing into and out of the tractor
  • Clutching, accelerating, braking, and shifting gears
  • Coupling the tractor to the trailer
  • Uncoupling the tractor to the trailer
  • Inspecting both the tractor and the trailer
  • Turning the tractor-trailer
  • Backing up the tractor trailer
  • Docking the tractor trailer

Practicing these things will help prepare you for week 3 of the paid CDL training program, which is driving on the road under the supervision of your trainer. Please note, that this is a fast-paced course that is well-suited to those individuals who are good at learning skills in a short amount of time.

Week 3

During week 3 of the program, you’ll get some real-world driving experience as you learn how to maneuver the tractor-trailer through city streets and on rural roads, highways, and expressways in both light and heavy traffic. Be prepared to handle intersections, on-ramps, off-ramps, slight inclines, slight downgrades, and railroad crossings. Overall, you should expect to train behind the wheel of a truck for 10 to 15 days.

Once you finish CDL school, you’ll then be required to go through 30 days of over-the-road (OTR) training with a driver trainer and then 60 days of OTR training with an independent contractor. You are allowed to request a driver trainer who doesn’t smoke during the 30-day and 60-day OTR training period, if you wish.

Be sure to bring the following items with you to school:

  • Your original Social Security card (cannot be laminated).
  • Your birth certificate with raised seal (not required if you currently reside in Indiana).
  • Your current valid U.S. state driver’s license.
  • 2 government forms dated within the last 60 days that verify your current address.
  • $180 in cash to pay for the administrative fee, permit fees, and DOT physical/drug test fees.
  • Enough money to pay for food and basic living expenses for the next 30 days.
  • 7 days worth of clean clothes, including outdoor winter gear, if necessary.
  • Toiletries such as soap, shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste, a tooth brush, and a shaver.
  • Clean bath towels and wash cloths.
  • A pillow and a sleeping bag or twin-sized sheets and blankets.
  • An alarm clock, flashlight, sunglasses, pen and pencil, paper, and a calculator.
  • A voided/cancelled check or bank deposit slip in order to set up direct deposit (optional).

Remember that you will be training outdoors so, dress accordingly. Be aware that most company sponsored CDl schools do not allow sleeveless shirts, tank tops, flip-flops, sandals, or cowboy boots during training. We recommend bringing along a pair of work boots with non-slip soles.

OTR Training

During your over-the-road training, C.R. England will pair you up, one-on-one, with a certified driver trainer. Your trainer will observe and guide you from the passenger seat while you accumulate the required minimum of 15,000 miles behind the wheel time over a required minimum time period of 30 days. The truck will be dispatched as a team operation and you will be paid $430 per week which comes out to $61.43 per day.

Once you complete your 30-day OTR training, you will then be enrolled into the C.A.T. Program, which stands for Career Advancement Training. C.R. England will pair you up with an independent contractor, one-on-one, for 60 more days of OTR training. During this time, you will be shown how the lease operator program works as you and your finishing trainer are dispatched as a team. You will also graduate to a Second Seat Driver position, where you will make 12 cents per mile for every mile the truck is in operation. You will also receive pickup, drop off, and detention pay. You can expect to make between $450 to $600 per week.

Once you successfully complete your OTR training, C.R. England will then hire you on as a full-time truck driver. You will be assigned your own late-model truck and will begin driving solo. As a C.R. England company driver, you will start out making 26 cents per mile. After 6 months, you’ll receive a 1 cent raise, increasing your wage to 27cpm. After 1 year, you will receive a 2 cent raise, making 29 cents per mile. From then on, as long as you remain a full-time driver with C.R. England, you will receive a 1cpm raise each year, up to a maximum of 42 cents per mile.

All full-time C.R. England drivers receive full medical, dental, and vision coverage 30 days after the first day of hire. Life insurance is also available after 6 months of full-time employment. After 1 year of employment, drivers are eligible to receive a 401(k) retirement savings plan. It is at this time that drivers also get paid vacation time.

Overall, here’s what you can expect when you sign up and get accepted into one of C.R. England’s company sponsored CDL schools:

  • The tuition cost is $2995.
  • The length of the paid CDL training course is 15-20 days, depending on the location of the program.
  • You do not need to have your commercial learner’s permit (CLP) before singing up.
  • During the first week of school, you will study for and pass the CDL written tests.
  • After obtaining your CLP, you will then go through a mix of classroom and driver training.
  • You will receive approximately 40 hours of classroom instruction.

A major benefit of C.R. England’s paid CDL training course is that they provide you with travel and hotel costs. If you have to travel from another city in order to get to a C.R. England company sponsored truck driving school, they will charge you nothing when you sign a driving contract, and will provide you with top-quality company paid CDL training in only 17 days.

While C.R. England’s paid CDL training program has a lot going for it, there is one thing about the CDL training program that prospective students need to keep in mind before they sign the contract. With an interest rate of 18%, C.R. England’s financing for the schooling is not competitive when compared to the interest rate offered by other company sponsored CDL schools. Most credit cards don’t even charge 18%, unless your credit score is in the lower tier. In fact, the national average credit card interest rate is 15%. Government financial aid is even lower than that, with an average interest rate of 6 to 8%.

There is one other downside to C.R. England’s paid CDL training program. Unless you become an owner-operator, there is really no way to work off the cost of tuition so that your company sponsored CDL training becomes free. For example, let’s say you work full-time for C.R. England three consecutive years. At the end of that 3-year period, you’ve already paid 18% interest on the school loan and the reimbursement still leaves approximately $3150 total tuition cost.

Frozen Food Express – Company Paid CDL Training

Commonly known as FFE, Frozen Food Express can help you with the best CDL training in one of the top company sponsored truck driving schools in the nation. FFE’s Student Driver Academy opened its doors in Fort Worth, TX before moving to Lancaster, TX where they are currently located.

Because FFE knows that success starts with the driver, they have grown to become one of the nation’s most profitable temperature-controlled transportation companies. It is this philosophy that drives the school’s instructors to transform ordinary men and women into highly skilled truck drivers and why FFE continues to dominate the industry as the place for new CDL-A holders.

FFE’s Student Driver Academy is comprised of an 18-day accelerated program that consists of quality classroom lectures, behind-the-wheel training, road/range instruction, and driver safety protocol. Students train on quality equipment while they receive top-notch guidance and support from their instructors, helping them to obtain their Class A commercial driver’s license.

Week 1

The day after you arrive at school, you’ll begin class. Most students arrive at the school on Monday and begin classes on Tuesday. During the first week of school, you’ll spend a minimum of 40 hours in the classroom, studying for the CDL written exam so that you can pass the exam and obtain your commercial learner’s permit (CLP). You’ll learn about truck systems, federal commercial driving regulations, state commercial driving laws, driver safety, and more. Once you obtain your CLP, you’ll start training on the driving range.

Week 2/Week 3

During the second and third week of school (about 9 to 10 days), you’ll practice gear shifting, backing, docking, and maneuvering a full-sized rig on the range. Although you should expect to share a truck with 3 other students and the instructor, you can be sure that the student to truck ratio will never be greater than 4 to 1. Many times, it is less. Just know that you’ll be observing other students operating a tractor-trailer as part of your training.

You’ll also drive on rural roads, city streets, highways, and expressways in order to prepare you for the CDL Road Test. After you pass the CDL Road Test and obtain your commercial driver’s license, you’ll enter the next phase of the paid CDL training program which is orientation.

Please note that this 18-day course is an accelerated program, and as such, you should be prepared to learn and train vigorously. Compared to most of the other paid CDL training programs we reviewed, this program is carried out at a fairly rapid pace.

Be sure to bring the following items:

  • Pen, pencil, paper, and a calculator.
  • 7 changes of clean clothes plus winter clothing if necessary.
  • Toiletries, including soap, shampoo, deodorant, toothbrush, tooth paste, and a shaver.
  • Washcloth and towels.
  • Alarm clock, flashlight, sunglasses, prescription driving glasses.
  • Bedding for the truck (pillow and sleeping bag or twin-sized sheets and blankets).
  • Work gloves and work boots with non-slip soles.
  • A cancelled/voided check or deposit slip to set up direct deposit for your paycheck (optional).
  • Foreign-born applicants must have the proper paperwork and a Green Card that does not expire within 8 months.

Orientation

Orientation is 4 days long. During this time you will be briefed on company policies and will be expected to fill out paperwork.

OTR Training

After orientation, you’ll beging 6 weeks of over-the-road (OTR) training with a certified driving instructor, one-on-one. During this time, you’ll run as a solo operation, with the trainer observing and guiding you from the jump seat. Once the trainer feels that you are well-equipped to handle the truck, the truck will then be dispatched as a team truck. During the entire 6 weeks of training you will be paid $445 per week, with the option to take a $75 pay advance against your future paychecks. If you wish, you can request a non-smoking trainer.

Once you have completed 6 weeks of OTR training, you will then be required to undergo a series of tests, including a CDL Road Test, Basic Knowledge Test, DOT medical exam, and a DOT drug test. Once you pass the CDL Road Test and obtain your commercial driver’s license, you will then be allowed to head back home for 5 to 6 days of rest. FFE will provide for your transportation back home.

Once you return back to FFE, you will be assigned your own truck and will begin driving solo. You’ll start out at 29 cents per mile for the first 6 months. After 6 months you’ll begin making 30cpm. You’ll then receive a 1 cent per mile increase every year for the next 5 years. After 5 years, you’ll receive a half-cent increase every year up to a maximum of 44 cents per mile. After 90 days of full-time employment, you’ll receive full benefits.

Overall, FFE’s company paid CDL training program is one of the best programs out there. While the CDL school is shorter than most other programs at only 18 days, the OTR training is longer than most at 6 weeks. There are no up-front tuition and lodging costs and no payroll deductions as long as you work for FFE for at least 1 year. Students are immediately given the opportunity to drive for Frozen Food Express upon graduating from the paid CDL training program. Benefits include consistent mileage, weekly pay, paid vacation, yearly raises, late-model equipment, and the chance to join the Drive to Own program.

Prime inc. – Company Paid CDL Training

Prime Inc. offers a great training program for people who want to get their CDL training from one of the best company sponsored truck driving schools in the nation. Prime’s Student Driver Program (PSD) includes extensive on-the-road practice so that you can become a top certified and experienced driver to win the big bucks that can be made in the fulfilling field of over-the-road truck driving. Of course, as with most company paid CDL training, you will need to commit to working with them for at least a year.

You start out in the program by obtaining your Missouri Commercial Learner’s Permit in 4 days. Then, once you have your CLP, you’ll train with a certified CDL instructor for no less than 75 hours (4 days) of one-on-one behind-the-wheel training at Prime’s Training Center in Springfield, Missouri. Here, you’ll work towards your minimum 40,000 dispatched miles with food allowance.

Once you finish your training at Prime’s Training Center, it’s time to hit the road for some on-the-road instruction. You’ll train behind the wheel with an experienced certified Prime CDL instructor for 3 to 4 weeks in a real-world environment. You’ll earn your first 10,000 miles of the 40,000 miles requirement.

After you finish your on-the-road training, you’ll return to Prime’s corporate headquarters in Springfield, MO. You’ll then be required to pass the CDL General Knowledge and Hazmat Endorsement written exams, plus the CDL Road Test in order to obtain your Missouri commercial driver’s license.

Once you obtain your CDL, you’ll automatically be hired as a “B2” company driver trainee, earning 14 cents per mile with a $700 per week guarantee. Once you fulfill the remaining 30,000 miles trainee requirement, you’ll be ready to enter the ACE orientation program.

During the ACE orientation program, you’ll be required to pass the upgrade skills test. You’ll then get into your own truck and drive on your own, earning 39.5 cents per mile or $850 to $1050 per week. If you drive one of the newer ECO49 trucks, you’ll earn 44.5 cents per mile or roughly $950 to $1200 per week.

You’ll finally be eligible for a company driver position. The only requirements are no accidents and completion of the ACE program, Driving Skills Test, and Smith System.

Students who have already obtained their CDL through a truck driving school will go straight to Prime’s Company Driver Orientation and then train with a TNT Trainer for a total of 40,000 miles, receiving a guaranteed minimum $600 per week for the first 30 days, and then $700 per week guaranteed minimum for the remainder of the training period.

You need to be a U.S resident or have a green card, at least 21 years old, a good work history, no felony, failed drug tests, DUI, or license suspensions, or moving violations.

PAM Transport – Company Paid CDL Training

Not every company is willing to train new students and new employees, but PAM Transport is more than happy to help out future employees with the option of getting their certification at a company sponsored truck driving schools. With the agreement in mind that the student will need to work with them upon completion for the minimum of at least a year, PAM Transport is a company that is more than happy to take on new drivers.

While PAM Transport doesn’t offer paid CDL training directly, they have partnered with Driver Solutions to offer company paid CDL training to anyone who qualifies. Upon graduating from the CDL training program, you will be guaranteed full-time employment for at least 1 year.

Benefits:

  • You’ll receive $5995 worth of CDL training for free with no payroll deductions.
  • Your lodging costs are paid for and are part of the tuition.
  • You do not need your commercial learner’s permit (CLP) before starting school.
  • You’ll receive one-on-one training with a highly experienced mentor while training on the road.

USA Truck – Company Paid CDL Training

If you find that you need a new job, but you lack a degree in a new field, USA Truck may be the answer. As a nationally recognized trucking company, they can help to provide you with the chance of a lifetime at top company sponsored truck driving schools so that you can get your company paid CDL training.

You see, it works like this. USA Truck has created long-lasting partnerships with eight of the nation’s best truck driving schools which help men and women with absolutely no trucking experience get the truck driver training they need to become a professional truck driver.

All you have to do is fill out an online application at USA Truck and, if you qualify, they’ll set you up with a truck driving school, free of charge. USA Truck will pay your tuition, and when you complete the program, you’ll work off the cost of the program by driving full-time for USA Truck for at least 1 year.

USA Truck will only deduct $20 from your weekly paycheck your first year, up to $1000. At the end of the year, USA Truck will then refund the $1000 back to you.

Don’t like any of the truck driving schools that USA Truck has partnered with? No problem. USA Truck is flexible enough to allow you to choose your own truck driving school to train at. The bad news is you’ll have to pay your own tuition costs up front.

The good news is USA Truck will reimburse you, up to $5000, once you graduate and start driving for them, adding an extra $100 to your salary each month. Please note that, if you received any kind of federal grant money while attending truck driving school, you will not be eligible for tuition reimbursement.

Once you graduate from the truck driving school, you’ll then attend the USA Truck orientation program. You have four different locations to choose from:

  1. Tipp City, Ohio
  2. Atlanta, Georgia
  3. West Memphis, Arkansas
  4. Van Buren, Arkansas

Your recruiter will arrange for your transportation. Just make sure that you arrive early at the bus station. Once you arrive at your destination, you’ll call the hotel or taxi service that’s listed on the directions provided by USA Truck. All hotel accommodations are double occupancy, with upgrades being available. The next morning you’ll meet in the hotel lobby at 6:30 a.m. to catch the shuttle to class. A continental breakfast and lunch will be available.

You must bring:

You’ll also be required to do some lot training, such as backing and shifting, as you get affiliated with the Smith System inside the trucks. You’ll get paid $235 during the classroom portion of orientation and $300 during the driving range portion of orientation for a total of $535. Be sure to ask your mentors any questions you may have and mingle with the other USA Truck drivers if possible.

Once you complete the orientation program, you’ll then start your one-on-one over-the-road training. OTR training consists of 4 weeks on the road with a personal trainer. The trainer will observe and guide you from the jump seat while you are dispatched on solo runs. Once you accumulate 9,000 logged miles, you’ll be ready for your own assigned truck.

You’ll get paid $525 per week during your OTR training. Please note that you’ll only get home time if your personal trainer gets home time. Either way, you should expect to be away from home during the entire 4 weeks of training.

Since the trucks are double-bunked, you will not have to worry about lodging. However, you will be required to provide your own meals. Newer trucks usually have a cooler or small refrigerator on board so, you should be able to pack your meals. You can also request a personal trainer who doesn’t smoke.

Once you accumulate the required 9,000 miles, you’ll then be ready for your own vehicle. USA Truck will assign you your own truck and you’ll start doing solo runs on your own.

As a starting driver, you can expect to make 32 cents per mile for the first 6 months. Then, after 6 months, you’ll receive a 5cpm increase, making 37 cents per mile. After 1 year, you’ll get a 1 cent increase per mile.

USA Truck is also a very beneficial company to work for when it comes to time at home with your family, as they are aware of the importance of spending time with the ones you love, especially after being away on the road for days on end. That’s why every 5 days that a driver is out, they get a 34-hour restart at home. For every 12 days that a driver is out, they get every other weekend at home.

All in all, USA Truck offers company paid training for those who don’t have their CDL and if you already have your CDL, you may still be eligible for a $5,000 reimbursement.

Roehl Transport – Company Paid CDL Training

Pronounced just like the word “rail”, Roehl Transport offers company paid CDL training through their “Get Your CDL Program”. They treat your CDL training like a job from day one, which means that you get paid $500 a week as you learn. The training takes place in different locations and it lasts for four weeks. After you obtain your Class A CDL, you’ll start your on-the-job training as a long haul truck driver with a certified personal trainer for 2 to 3 weeks, making $90 a day. Once you become a full-time heavy-duty truck driver for the company, you will be assigned your own truck and can expect to receive full pay and benefits.

Roehl Transport offers a company paid CDL training with the expectation that you will be committed to working at least 15 months/120,000 miles for them. They will require a signature of agreement and if at any time you choose to quit working for them within the 15-month time period, you will be expected to pay the full cost of your training. The upside to the contract is that you will be paid a decent wage while you train and automatically be hired as a full-time employee once your company paid CDL training is finished.

Applying for Roehl’s paid CDL training program is very similar to applying for an actual Roehl truck driving job. First, you’ll apply online by filling out their “Get Started” form. Roehl will contact you shortly after receiving your application and ensure that you have a good understanding of the program, including the basic qualifications and the characteristics of a Roehl trucking job. This will allow you to complete a much more in-depth application later on. Once you’re pre-qualified, Roehl will have you come in for a face-to-face interview.

Roehl will ask you some basic questions to determine if you’re eligible for the program and see if you meet the qualifications of the job. You’ll then watch some informational videos to help you better understand their paid CDL training program and what you’ll be doing as a heavy-duty Roehl truck driver.

Once you’ve been accepted into the program, you’ll be directed to the nearest Roehl CDL training center. You’ll train with late-model equipment on the driving range and on the road. On the range, you’ll practice backing maneuvers, gear shifting, turning, docking, coupling/uncoupling, and more. On the road, you’ll operate the tractor-trailer in real-world driving situations, including city streets, highways, and expressways, both in light and heavy traffic. The class sizes are small with a student to instructor ratio of 3 to 1.

During the last week of the program you’ll test for your commercial driver’s license (CDL). Once you have your CDL, you’ll start your over-the-road (OTR) training. Roehl will pair you up with a certified driver trainer and the two of you will drop loads for the next 2 to 3 weeks. Your trainer will observe and guide you from the passenger seat as you hone your driving skills, securement skills, and trip planning skills.

After you complete 2 to 3 weeks of OTR training, you’ll report for orientation and officially be hired by Roehl as a full-time heavy-duty truck driver. Be sure to call your driver employment specialist the Monday before your qualification day to discuss your travel and lodging arrangements. Before you leave home be sure to plan your trip accordingly. Know where exactly you are going, when you have to be there, and check the weather forecast to see what you’ll need to wear on the first day of orientation. 

Be sure to bring the following items to orientation:

  • Soft-sided luggage, such as a duffel bag or gym bag, that can be easily stored in the compartment of a truck.
  • Bring as backpack to hold all the books and materials you will receive during orientation.
  • Pack enough clean clothes to last 7 days. Include winter gear, such as a heavy coat, hat, and gloves, if necessary.
  • Flatbed drivers must bring steel-toed shoes or boots, as well as coveralls, shorts or long johns (according to season).
  • Bring work gloves and sturdy work clothes for your hands-on training.
  • Toiletries like soap, shampoo, deodorant, toothbrush, toothpaste, shaving materials, and flip=flops for showering in.
  • Bring a small laundry bag for your dirty clothes and a small bag to carry clean clothes and personal items.
  • Bring personal medications and medical items such as eyeglasses, contacts, etc.
  • If you will be bringing a CPAP machine, bring a DC adapter, battery backup & a compliance report from a medical supply store.
  • Bring a sleeping bag and pillow or twin-size sheets and blankets for the truck bed.
  • Bring a notebook, paper, pens, pencils, a calculator, a flashlight, and an alarm clock.
  • Bring your valid state driver’s license, Social Security card, and a travel document (birth certificate or U.S. passport).
  • Bring either a voided check or deposit slip that shows your bank account number in order to set up direct deposit.
  • You must send a copy of your Driving School Diploma to your employment specialist before arriving at orientation.
  • If you are a veteran, you must send a copy of your DD Form to your employment specialist before arriving at orientation.
  • You will need to complete the U.S. passport application form DS-11 before you embark on your OTR training.
  • If you travel to orientation in a rental car, Roehl will reimburse your toll fees and fuel expenses. You MUST provide receipts.

Roehl will assign you your own late-model truck and you’ll start doing solo runs, averaging $900 to $1250 per week. You’ll also receive employee benefits, including medical, dental, vision, and life insurance, as well as a tax-free 401(k) retirement savings plan.

Before Roehl will hire you on as a driver, you must first prove that you are capable of meeting the physical demands of the job. Below is a short video by Roehl outlining the pre-screening process that you must pass before you can be officially hired on as a Roehl truck driver.

Jim Palmer Trucking – Company Paid CDL Training

The company paid CDL training program, called Class 8 University by Jim Palmer Trucking, is approximately 2 to 4 weeks in length, and is held at Jim Palmer Trucking’s Training Centers. During the first week of class, you’ll spend 2 to 3 days learning about truck systems, industry terminology, and either Missouri or Montana state regulations, depending on which training center you go to. You’ll also study the federal regulations, so that you’ll be well-equipped to to pass your CDL written exams.

  • Approximately 40 hours of class time studying for the CLP written exams.
  • If you already have your CLP when you start class, you’ll skip ahead to the drive range and over-the-road training phases of the program.
  • If you already possess your CDL you’ll be evaluated and possibly be accepted into the Onboarding class, before heading out with a trainer for the required 40,000 minimum miles.

Once you pass your exams and obtain your commercial learner’s permit (CLP), you’ll spend the rest of the week practicing important truck driving maneuvers on the driving range, like backing, turning, and gear shifting.

  • You’ll start driving/training during the end of the first week of school.
  • You’ll work towards your 40,000 training dispatched miles.
  • You’ll receive a $200/week advance for living expenses while you train (deducted from your weekly paycheck in $25 increments once you’re employed).

During the last few weeks of the program, you’ll pair up with a highly experienced driving instructor for your one-on-one training “over-the-road”. It’s here that you’ll gain some real-world experience as you drive on rural roads, highways, and expressways, learning important safety techniques, and discovering how to make quick split-second decisions.

  • You’ll train with a professional CDL instructor for 3 to 4 weeks in a real-world environment.
  • You’ll get a minimum of 75 hours of “behind-the-wheel” time with a 1:1 pupil/instructor ratio.
  • You’ll accumulate your first 10,000 miles towards the minimum required 40,000 miles.

After 2 to 4 weeks of road training, you’ll head to either Springfield, Missouri or Missoula, Montana where you’ll finally take the CDL Skills test and obtain your commercial driver’s license (CDL). Once you obtain your Class A CDL, you’ll drive for an extended period of time with a trainer and work towards getting your own truck so you can drive solo.

  • You’ll finally pass your Missouri or Montana CDL Skills Test and obtain your Class A CDL.
  • During the first 10,000 miles you’ll be a C-seat company driver trainee, earning either $600/week or 12 cents per mile, whichever is greater.
  • During the last 20,000 miles, you’ll be upgraded to a B-seat company driver trainee, earning $700/week or 14 cents per mile, whichever is greater.

Finally, you’ll attend the Onboarding class in either Springfield, Missouri or Missoula, Montana. It’s here that you’ll finally pass the Upgrade Skills Test and get into your own truck. Once you start driving solo, you’ll earn 40 cents per mile. If you choose to drive in a two-person team, you will each split 44 cents per mile. You can also lease a truck if you’d like.

  • You’ll travel to either MO or MT for the Onboarding Class. Transportation costs will be paid for.
  • Lodging and lunches will also be provided for during the two-day Onboarding class.
  • You’ll tour the Jim Palmer Trucking facility and meet the staff working in each department.
  • You’ll learn about company policies and procedures and even meet with the owner, one-on-one.
  • You’ll receive your final evaluation and complete all the necessary paperwork for your DOT file.
  • Be sure to ask questions about any policies or procedures you don’t understand.

Jim Palmer Trucking provides company paid CDL training and helps you get it as soon as possible so that you can start driving as soon as possible. Jim Palmer Trucking will provide you with $200 for living expenses during your CDL training which will be paid back once you start working. Here’s how the program works. During the first week of the company paid CDL training program, you’ll spend most of your time in the classroom. You’ll be given lectures on truck components and truck systems, proper logging technique, South Dakota commercial driving laws and federal transportation regulations. This is all done to prepare you for the CDL General Knowledge exam so you can pass the exam and receive your commercial learner’s permit (CLP).

Once you obtain your commercial learner’s permit, you can then move onto the next phase of the program which is practicing backing maneuvers, turning, and gear shifting on the driving range. You’ll also practice driving with a trainer on rural roads, city streets and busy highways, giving you the feel of what it will be like as a full-time truck driver. You’ll learn important driver safety rules and various techniques for successfully operating an 18-wheeler in various driving situations.

During the second phase of your CDL training, you’ll also learn about how to properly maintain your vehicle and how to successfully pass the upcoming Pre-Trip Inspection so that you can obtain your commercial driver’s license (CDL).

Most students can expect the CDL training program to last 3 to 4 weeks but, because the program is personalized to meet your own needs, how well you perform will determine the actual length of the program.

Once you complete the 4-week training program and obtain your CDL, you’ll then be paired up, one-on-one, with a highly experienced personal trainer who will ride with you and guide you along as you drive the minimum 10,000 miles required to complete the “driver training” phase of the program.

It’s during this driver training phase of the paid CDL training program that you’ll earn $500 for the first 3 weeks, and then $100 per day for the fourth and final week, which MCT calls the Advanced Driver Training Program or, ADTP, for short. Some of your meals will be paid for during this part of the training as well.

After you’ve completed your over-the-road driver training, you’ll then be hired by MCT and accepted into the orientation program at either Sioux Falls, South Dakota or Atlanta, Georgia. You’ll be paid $250 for two and a half days plus an allowance to cover your meals. You’ll then be issued your own truck and will transition from training pay to mileage pay, starting at 30 cents per mile.

One thing to note about the CDL training program. Although MCT will cover your tuition costs, they will not pay for your meals, transportation, or lodging while you train. MCT recommends that you plan to spend at least $1000 to cover these costs during training. MCT has, however, partnered with local hotels to get you a discounted rate during your stay.

You’ll also need to bring approximately $100 to cover your licensing and permit fees, $130 to pay for your TWIC card fees, and $100 to cover your U.S. passport fees. All in all, you can expect to pay a total of $1330 to cover the fees associated with MCT’s company paid CDL training program. My advice is to have at least $1500 saved up for expenses before you begin MCT’s paid CDL training program.

If you’d like, you do have the option of paying your own tuition costs up-front. This will run you $3500. Once hired by MCT, you’ll then receive a tuition reimbursement over the course of 24 months of employment, making your CDL training completely free.

It is important to note that, although MCT does not deduct any fees from your weekly paycheck to pay for the cost of tuition, once you are hired on as a driver with MCT you are required to work for them for at least 1 year in order for your CDL training to remain free.

  • You do not need your commercial learner’s permit (CLP) before starting school.

  • You’ll start out at 30 cents per mile with a 1cpm pay increase each year until you reach 41cpm.
  • All drivers are eligible for a fuel bonus of 5cpm.
  • All drivers receive an additional $10 stop pay for every stop between the first and last stops.
  • Any driver that is available for a load longer than 24 hours will receive $75 layover pay.
  • Any driver that is held more than 5 hours past the appointed time will accrue $15 every hour.
  • If your truck breaks down, you’ll be paid $75 per day and lodging will be supplied.
  • 90 days after hire, you’ll be eligible for medical, dental, vision, and life insurance.
  • 90 days after hire, you’ll be eligible for the 401-K Success Sharing Plan.
  • You’ll receive 1 week paid vacation after 1 year, 2 weeks after 5 years & 4 weeks after 10 years.
  • Expect to be home 1 day for every week you’re out. Most drivers are home weekly or bi-weekly.
  • Maximum home time is 4 days while minimum time OTR is 3 weeks.
  • If you live near a major city, you’ll likely be eligible for regional or dedicated runs.
  • You’ll drive Kenworth, Freightliner, Volvo, or Peterbilt trucks. The condition of each truck varies.
  • All of MCT’s trucks are equipped with electronic logs & power inverters but, no APU units.
  • You can have 1 dog or 1 cat under 40 lbs. in their truck. A $1000 deposit is required.
  • You can have 1 rider as long as they are at least 12 years of age.

Requirements:

  • You must be at least 21 years old to apply.
  • You must be a U.S. citizen or legally allowed to work in the United States (Green Card).
  • You must have a valid driver’s license from the state that you declare as your current residence.
  • You must have a stable work history with verifiable employers/references the past 3 years.
  • You must not have any reckless driving convictions in the last 3 years on your driving record.
  • You must not have more than 4 moving violations in the last 3 years on your driving record.
  • You must not have more than 2 moving violations on your driving record during the last year.
  • You cannot have any license suspensions due to points on your driving record in the last 3 years.
  • You cannot have refused or failed any drug/alcohol tests in the last 4 years, including DUI/BAC.
  • You must pass a DOT medical examination and a DOT drug test.
  • You must pay for your own transportation, lodging, and meals during training. About $1000.
  • You must pay for your own licensing, permit, passport, and TWIC card fees. A total of $330.
  • You must drive for MCT for at least 24 months in order for your company paid CDL training to remain free.
  • If you decide to pay your own tuition up-front, it will cost you $3500 out-of-pocket.
  • You must be physically and mentally able to stay away from home for at least 7 days at a time.

Not only is Maverick’s paid CDL training program completely free up front, Maverick will not deduct any money from your weekly paycheck as long as you work for them full-time for at least 6 months. That’s the shortest contractually required driving period of all of the company paid CDL training programs we’ve reviewed so far.

As a student, you’ll also receive above-average trainee pay, including $550 per week while you train and $550 during orientation plus, a graduation bonus of $800. After you graduate from the program, you can look forward to great pay, unmatched home time, and late-model top-of-the-line trucks and equipment.

Before you apply online, Maverick recommends that you give their recruiters a call first. This is so they can ask you a few questions and “pre-qualify” you to make sure that you’re a good fit for the program. After you’ve been pre-qualified by a recruiter, you’ll then want to apply online.

Once your application has been approved, Maverick will have you come in to discuss the application. It’s at this time that Maverick will run a background check and, after 5 to 7 days, if you pass the background check, you’ll come back for the week long paid orientation program. Maverick will even pay for your bus ticket to Arkansas. If you prefer to drive yourself, Maverick will reimburse your fuel expenses.

Here is how the Maverick paid CDL training program works. If you already possess a Class A CDL, you’ll go straight from the orientation program to the 1-week long Securement Training program where you will learn how to load, fasten, and unload a full-sized Maverick flatbed trailer.

If you do not possess either a commercial learner’s permit (CLP) or a commercial driver’s license (CDL), then, after the week long paid orientation program, you’ll be given a job offer and, if you accept, you’ll be sent to Arkansas State University-Newport to start your 4-week long company sponsored CDL training program. Classes start every 3 weeks.

Your breakfast, lunch, lodging, permits, and fees will all be paid for during this time. Even though your meals will only be paid for Monday through Friday, you’ll receive a $550 pre-paid VISA car during orientation to help with expenses.

During your time at ASUN, you’ll be in class/training for 8 to 10 hours a day/night, Monday thru Friday. You’ll spend about 1 hour in the classroom. Here’s what you’ll learn:

On the driving range, you’ll practice backing maneuvers, turning, gear shifting, etc. Most likely, you will not have to share a truck with any other students but, that all depends on the size of your class.

After you graduate from ASUN’s Commercial Driver Training program, you’ll then head back to the Maverick terminal where you’ll undergo 1 week of securement training in which you’ll learn, hands-on, how to properly secure loads on a full-sized flatbed truck.

After completing the securement training, you’ll then pair up with a highly experienced personal trainer, one-on-one, who will mentor you during the Over-The-Road Training program. The trainer will remain in the jump seat while you operate the rig, observing and guiding you the entire time.

Even though 21 days is the minimum amount of behind-the-wheel time required for trainees, you can expect to drive for approximately 5 to 6 weeks. During this time, you’ll drop loads and get paid $550 per week. If you wish, you can request a personal trainer who does not smoke.

After you complete your OTR training, you’ll then be given your own truck. It is mat this time that you’ll begin doing solo runs, making 38 cents per mile empty and 45 cents per mile loaded. After 6 months as a solo driver, you’ll be given a pay increase of 2 to 6 cents per mile depending on your division. You’ll also be released from any contractual obligations pertaining to your tuition loan.

Compared to all the other company paid CDL training programs, Maverick’s is one of the best in the commercial trucking business. Not only are all your training costs paid for up-front, including your $3000 tuition, meals (breakfast/lunch), lodging, permit, and fees, but you only have to drive for Maverick for a total of 6 months in order to fulfill your contractual agreement and be released from any obligation to pay back the cost of tuition. That’s half the time that all the other trucking companies require you to drive. In my opinion, signing up and completing Maverick’s paid CDL training program is a win-win situation all around.

  • All trucks are Freightliner Columbias set at 65mph. They come with pre-paid passes for tolls.
  • Freight is about 65% drop/hook company-wide.

Schneider – Company Paid CDL Training

  • You’ll train on the road with a variety of tractor-trailers.
  • You’ll be in school Monday-Friday and have the weekends off.

During the first week of school, you’ll spend most of your time in the classroom receiving 40 hours of lecture time on basic mechanical systems and individual truck components, essential driving skills, and state and federal regulations, in order to prepare you for your CDL general knowledge exam and HAZMAT Endorsement exam.

During the second week of school, you’ll obtain your commercial learner’s permit (CLP) and begin your actual “behind-the-wheel” training inside the truck, practicing various driving exercises on the closed lot, such as backing, turning, and shifting gears, all designed to mimic everyday truck driving and truck parking.

You’ll also begin driving on low-traffic roadways and city streets with your instructor, learning how to maneuver your vehicle in real-world driving situations with various tractor-trailer combinations. It’s during this second and third week of training that you’ll receive a mix of lot training and open road training.

During the fourth and final week of your paid CDL training, you’ll sharpen your driving skills, practice your routing and paperwork skills, and learn advanced gear-shifting techniques. You’ll also graduate to more complex driving conditions on the open road, such as driving in heavy traffic, both on the freeway and in the city, in order to fine-tune your ability to maneuver a fully-loaded 40-ton rig in different driving situations. You’ll also learn about what to do if your rig breaks down due to mechanical failures.

Finally, you’ll go through a thorough review and one last practice test before taking the actual commercial driver’s license (CDL) exam. Once you pass the exam and obtain your Class A CDL, you’ll finally graduate from the training program and enter the 3-week paid orientation program at Schneider National.

The 3-week orientation program at Schneider National consists of three phases of training and a driver skills test. You’ll get paid $80 per day during the orientation program then, after you pass the skills test and start driving solo, you’ll get paid at the normal starting rate.

Phase 1 – Hard Skills

The first phase of the Schneider orientation program is split into three parts:

  1. Classroom Training. In the classroom you’ll learn proper logging protocol, how to use a permit book, and other basic truck driving information. You’ll also be instructed on the proper safety techniques that will prevent you, and those around you, from getting hurt on the job.
  2. Tractor Simulators. During the first week of the orientation program, you’ll start training on Schneider’s state-of-the-art driving simulators. You’ll learn how to safely maneuver your Schneider truck through potentially hazardous driving conditions before you even hit the road. The “virtual-reality” trucking simulators are realistic and help you get acclimated to the same controls and setup you’ll be using out there on the road.
  3. In-Truck Training. During the first four days of the orientation program, you’ll be out in the Schneider training yard, practicing backing and slow-maneuvering to get you warmed up for the road training you’ll do. On the road, you’ll practice turns and navigate your way through traffic.

Phase 2 – Training Engineer

During the second phase of the orientation program, you’ll spend all your time training on the road with a highly experienced training engineer. It’s during this phase that you’ll finally start getting some actual hands-on work while the training engineer observes you and guides you through the entire process, answering any questions you may have about the day-to-day process.

Phase 3 – Soft Skills

After you complete the Training Engineer phase of the orientation program, you’ll journey back to the Schneider Training Facility in order to undergo soft skills training. During this phase of the orientation program you’ll receive more behind-the-wheel training and more classroom instruction. In the classroom, you’ll learn basic trip planning and receive instruction on how to properly use Schneider’s mobile communication platform.

The Skills Test

Once you complete all three phases of the orientation program, it’s time to take the Skills Test to prove that you are qualified to start driving for Schneider full-time. The Skills Test includes a pre-trip vehicle inspection, a coupling/uncoupling procedure, and a road course that encompasses 15 to 20 miles of rural, city, and freeway driving. Once you pass the Skills Test and feel that you are confident enough to go on your own, you’ll officially become a Schneider driver and start driving in your own truck.

Celadon’s paid CDL training program is unique in that they require you to team drive for a minimum of 120,000 miles after graduating. This is three times the mileage required by most other trucking companies. Once you have driven the required 120,000 miles in a team, you’ll then be required to drive solo in your own company truck for at least 1 year in order to pay back the cost of your tuition. It is during this first year as a solo driver that Celadon will deduct $50 from your paycheck each week until you have paid back a total of $2600.

You also have the option of paying for your CDL training up front. The out-of-pocket cost is $2600.

During the first week of school, you’ll spend most of your time in the classroom. You’ll learn about the components of a truck, truck systems, basic logging, driver safety, and most importantly, state and federal laws and regulations.

Once you’ve gone through 40 hours of classroom instruction, you’ll then be ready to take the CDL written exams. After you pass the written exams and obtain your commercial learner’s permit (CLP), you’ll move on to the next phase of training which is practice various maneuvers on the range and driving on local roads.

During this next phase of training, you’ll split your time between the driving range and the road. One downside of Celadon’s paid CDL training program is that you are forced to share a truck with 4 to 8 other students. This is higher than average when compared to most other company sponsored truck driving schools that group you with 1 to 3 other students per truck.

Since you have to share a single truck with 4 to 8 other students, you’ll only receive about 30 total minutes of actual “behind-the-wheel” training time on the driving range each day. You’ll practice various maneuvers like backing and lane positioning, as well as basic control and gear shifting.

The rest of your time inside the truck will be spent driving on the road with an instructor. You’ll experience real-life driving situations, operating a full-size rig on city streets, rural roads, highways, and expressways, both in light and heavy traffic. It’s here, on the public roadways, that you’ll put into practice the commercial driving laws and regulations that you learned inside the classroom.

While most students are in school for an average of 4 weeks, your actual time in CDL school will vary based on your own personal skill level. After approximately 4 weeks of schooling, you’ll graduate from Celadon Driving Academy and start working for Celadon as a team driver. You’ll be paired up with a personal trainer for 5 to 6 weeks in a team driving situation for your over-the-road (OTR) training.

During your over-the-road training, your personal trainer will observe your driving skills and mentor you as you drive and drop loads as a “solo operation”. You’ll get paid as a Celadon trainee at a rate of 25 cents per mile for a required minimum of 10,000 miles, averaging between $400 to $500 per week.

Once you complete the required 10,000 miles of OTR training with your personal trainer, you’ll then graduate to the next level of OTR training. It is during this phase of the paid CDL training program that you’ll be paired up with an experienced Celadon driver and drive as a team for the next 6 to 8 months, racking up the required 120,000 miles. During this phase of the training program, you’ll earn 42 cents per mile split, averaging about $500 to $600 per week.

After 6 months of OTR training, your pay will increase from 42 cents per mile split, to 50 cents per mile split, averaging $600 to $800 per week. During this time, you’ll also have the ability to make 60 cents per mile split which would put you in the $800 to $900 per week pay range.

After you accumulate the required 120,000 miles, you’ll finally be assigned your own truck and work as a solo driver. You’ll be required to drive for Celadon full-time for at least 1 year in order to pay back your tuition amount of $2600. During this 52-week period, Celadon will deduct $50 from your weekly paycheck.

Based on your own performance as a driver, you could earn up to $60,000 your first year, which is above average compared to the first-year salary of the other trucking companies we reviewed.

Compared to the other paid CDL training programs we reviewed, Celadon’s tuition cost of $2600 is lower than average, making CDA a good place to pursue your CDL. Cypress Truck Lines – Company Paid CDL Training

In 1912, a man named H.C. Ploof decided to start his own transport company in Jacksonville, Florida. He called it Ploof Transfer Company and, with only a few wagons and some mules to pull them, he began transporting construction materials for local builders.

By 1941, H.C. Ploof had expanded Ploof Transfer Company, substituting wagons and mules for powerful tractors and trailers. That year, the company was acquired by W.B. Copeland, who changed the name to Ploof Truck Lines, Inc. Cypress Truck Lines was founded in the year 1972.

By 1999, Ploof Truck Lines, Inc. was in Chapter 11 Bankruptcy. It was then that David V. Penland, President of Cypress Truck Lines, Inc. purchased the assets of Ploof Truck Lines out of bankruptcy and changed the name of the company to Ploof Carriers Corporation.

Now, almost 20 years later, Cypress Truck Lines and Ploof Carriers have merged together to become one of the largest flatbed carriers in the U.S., operating a fleet of over 500 tractors and 1,200 flatbed trailers nationwide, with terminals in Florida, Georgia, Texas, and North Carolina. Currently, Cypress Truck Lines is the largest gypsum carrier in the United States.

It’s at the Jacksonville terminal in Florida where students go to receive paid CDL training from Cypress Truck Lines. Not only is the Cypress CDL training free, with no up-front tuition cost or payroll deductions, trainees are paid $500 per week during the entire length of the 7-week OTR training program. While students are not paid during the 4 weeks of CDL school, they do receive free lodging.

Please keep in mind that you must already possess your commercial learner’s permit (CLP) before you can start Cypress Trucking’s paid CDL training program.

During the first 3 weeks of CDL school, you’ll mostly be in the classroom, learning about company policies, proper logging, Cypress’s in-cab communication systems, and more. You’ll also spend time on the driving range, practicing backing maneuvers, turning, gear-shifting, and more. During the fourth and final week of school you’ll mainly be on the driving range, perfecting your backing and gear shifting skills.

While Cypress Trucking does provide free lodging, you will be responsible for your own meals. There’s no need to worry about transportation though since Cypress’s dorm rooms are conveniently on-site and only a short walk away from the training center.

One of the great things about Cypress Trucking’s paid CDL training program is that the classes are very small with only 6 to 10 students per class. Not only that, you’ll each have your own truck on the driving range since Cypress doesn’t force students to share trucks.

Once you complete the first 4 weeks of the training program, you’ll then begin your over-the-road driver training. The OTR training phase lasts for approximately 6 to 7 weeks. You’ll be paired up with a highly experienced personal trainer who will observe and mentor you from the passenger seat as you go on “solo” runs. You’ll also receive 1 week of flatbed securement training during this time. Cypress Trucking will pay you $100 per day from Monday through Friday, totaling $500 per week.

One downside of the OTR training phase is that Cypress cannot guarantee that you’ll be home every weekend. You should expect to be away from home for the entire 6 to 7 weeks of training. While this sounds like an inconvenience, keep in mind that once you are hired on as a Cypress driver, you can expect to be home each and every weekend.

Once you fulfill the 6 to 7 weeks of OTR driver training, you’ll head to either the Jacksonville terminal in Florida, the Smyrna terminal in Georgia, or the Abilene terminal in Texas, for your week long paid orientation. It is during this time that you’ll take a DOT physical and undergo a DOT drug screening, fill out all your payroll and insurance paperwork.

After that, you’ll watch instructional videos and participate in some short teaching lesson, before being tested one last time on the lot. You’ll be paid $100 per day from Monday thru Friday for a total of $500. If you live further than 50 miles from the closest orientation terminal, Cypress will pay for your bus ticket.

Orientation starts promptly at 8 a.m., except for the Abilene, Texas orientation, which starts at 8:30 a.m. Do NOT be late.

You’ll need to bring the following to orientation:

  • 10 years of employment history.
  • If you were self-employed the past 10 years, verification via w-2 or tax forms.
  • If you had any lapses of employment during the last 10 years, bring verification, such as a letter from friends and non-immediate family members or unemployment check stubs.
  • A valid U.S. driver’s license.
  • Your original Social Security card or your birth certificate.
  • A copy of your DD214, if you were in the armed service anytime during the past 10 years.
  • A voided check or deposit slip along with the address and phone number of your bank.
  • TWIC card (You’ll begin the pre-registration process at orientation. Fees will be payroll deducted).
  • Money for food.
  • Clean clothes.
  • Work boots (non-slip).
  • No shorts, tennis shoes, sandals, or cowboy boots allowed.
  • Lodging is provided unless you live within 50 miles of the terminal.
  • Meals are not provided.

After you have completed the paid orientation program and obtained your Class A CDL, Cypress will then hire you on as a driver, and you’ll be assigned your own truck. You’ll start doing solo runs, making 40 cents per mile loaded and 34 cents per mile empty. After 6 months of full-time employment, you’ll get a 1cpm raise. You can also expect to be home every weekend.

While Cypress Trucking does not deduct any money from your paycheck each week, you are contractually obligated to drive for them for at least 1 full year in order for your tuition to remain free. One full year is the average length of contracted driving time for most paid CDL training programs.

While Cypress requires you to pay for your own meals during CDL school, without receiving any sort of compensation, there is no up-front tuition cost, lodging is provided for, and classes are small. Plus, as long as you fulfill your end of the agreement and drive for Cypress for 1 year, your tuition will remain free, making Cypress Trucking’s company paid CDL training program a great deal overall.

TMC – Company Paid CDL Training

Founded in 1972 by Harold Annett, The McKow Corporation, better known as TMC, started with only six power units and an office staff of two people. Today, TMC is not only the industry’s premiere flatbed carrier, operating a vast network of terminals and maintenance facilities nationwide, and providing specialized flatbed service throughout the 48 contiguous states, they are an employee owned company, offering its employees a percentage of the yearly profits.

TMC’s headquarters, located in scenic Des Moines, Iowa are set on a picturesque 50-acre campus. There you’ll find a state-of-the-art training center, maintenance facilities, Black and Chrome Truck Sales, and the up-scale Baymont Inn and Suites, where students of TMC’s paid CDL training program get to rest and relax after a long day of training.

One of the few on-the-job truck driver training programs in the country to be approved by the Department of Labor as a certified Heavy Truck Apprenticeship program, TMC’s paid CDL training program is both comprehensive and state-of-the-art. TMC prides themselves on their mission to train well-qualified, safety-minded truck drivers who go the extra mile to get the job done accurately and safely.

TMC offers two types of CDL training programs. The first program is a company sponsored CDL training program where you go to a private truck driving school that is approved by TMC, pay your own tuition and obtain your Class A CDL, and then go through paid orientation and paid over-the-road (OTR) training at the TMC Headquarters in Des Moines, Iowa. 

Once you get hired by TMC, they will then reimburse your CDL school tuition, up to $6000, by paying you an extra $200 per month until the total tuition amount has been refunded. This begins 30 days after your hire date. TMC will even offer you tuition reimbursement if you’ve driven for no more than one trucking company before being hired by TMC.

The second paid CDL training program offered by TMC is a comprehensive “in-house” CDL training program for students who do not have their commercial driver’s license (CDL). This program is operated entirely on campus at the TMC Headquarters in Des Moines, Iowa. While TMC requires that you already have your Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) with you when you arrive on day one, they do not require you to have any truck driving experience whatsoever. There is no tuition payback, but you will be required to drive for TMC for at least 1 year once you complete your CDL training.

The great thing about TMC’s in-house CDL training program is that almost everything is provided for you, right on their 50-acre spread. I say “almost” because, as a student, you will be required to pay for your breakfast and dinner, as well as your permit, license fees, and DOT medical exam and drug test, but your lodging, lunches, and full tuition cost are all paid and provided for by TMC.

The entire training program consists of 3 weeks of classroom and lot training, followed by 5 weeks of over-the-road paid CDL training with a personal trainer. While TMC does not pay you during the 3-week in-house CDL training period, they do pay you $500 per week during your 5 weeks of OTR training.

The first week of school is spent in the state-of-the-art classroom, sitting at your own personal computer while the instructor goes over state and federal commercial driving regulations, truck systems, individual truck components, and essential driving skills.

You can expect to receive 40 hours of classroom time learning everything you need to know to pass the CDL written exams. At the end of the week you’ll take the CDL General Knowledge exam in order to obtain your commercial learner’s permit (CLP). You will be required to pay $150 to cover permit and licensing fees.

Another great benefit that comes with TMC’s in-house CDL training program is a low instructor to student ratio of 1 instructor for every 2 students. This means that you’ll share a truck with no more than 1 other student, giving you plenty of practice time on the training lot. During the next 2 weeks of your CDL training, you’ll spend most of your time on the lot with some simulator time mixed in.

On the training lot, you’ll get plenty of in-cab time as you learn and practice gear shifting, double-clutching, backing, parallel parking, and turning. Your instructor will also ride with you as you take a full-sized flatbed tractor-trailer on rural roads, city streets, highways, and expressways, both in light and heavy traffic. Your flatbed will even be fully loaded with cement blocks in order to simulate a “solo run” and give you the hands-on feeling of maneuvering a fully loaded rig.

Back inside the classroom, you’ll practice navigating through hazardous driving conditions on a driving simulator surrounded by three high-definition plasma screens. Each of the four simulators are programmed to the same specifications found in TMC’s equipment. You’ll receive at least two hours of driving simulation time, learning how to navigate through tire blowouts and other driving hazards.

Once you finish the 3-week CDL training portion, you’ll then go into the Apprentice Driver orientation program which incorporates flatbed training and is approximately 2 weeks in length. TMC will arrange for a car rental to and from Des Moines, Iowa so that you will have adequate transportation to orientation. If you prefer to travel by bus, TMC will pay for your bus ticket, but only one way. You’ll be provided with a car rental for the trip back home.

You’ll attend orientation 7 days the first week and 5 days the following week. You’ll arrive at the Baymont Inn and Suites on Sunday night. You’ll want to make sure you get up early enough Monday morning in order to catch the shuttle bus from the hotel lobby at 6:45 am. Do not be late!

There is no parking available at the training center so, driving your own personal vehicle is out of the question, unless you are a local resident who is going back home every evening. Please note that the shuttle bus stops at Wal-Mart on Tuesday evening so you can purchase food for dinner.

Be sure to refrain from having a large breakfast, sweets, and anything containing caffeine on Monday morning since you’ll be undergoing a DOT physical examination, drug screening, and physical therapist session.

You are required to bring the following items:

  • Work boots (must be worn the first day of class due to the physical assessment).
  • No tank tops, sleeveless shirts, shorts, sweatpants, sandals, or flip-flops allowed.
  • Your hard-copy state CDL or state CLP.
  • A valid U.S. passport or a state certified copy of your birth certificate.
  • Your hard-copy Social Security card (not the letter saying one has been approved).
  • Your TWIC card, if you have one.
  • Your bank’s routing and account number for setting up direct deposit (a deposit slip will do).
  • If you do not have a bank account, TMC will provide you with an ATM card account.
  • Birthdates and S.S. numbers of all the family members you will be placing on your insurance.
  • Work clothes, rain jacket, and winter gear (Oct-May).
  • Rand-McNally truck atlas. You can purchase one at the gift shop for $18 or $36 (laminated).
  • Any medical items needed including eyeglasses, contacts, medications, CPAP machine, etc.
  • A set of headphones/earbuds with the standard 1/8” or 3.5mm jack (like on MP3 players).
  • $300 cash collected on the 1st day. $150 for fees/$150 is paid back to you at $50 per week.
  • You may be leaving orientation to go directly on the road with your trainer so, plan accordingly.

At this point, you’ll finally start to get paid, $500 after completing the first week of orientation, and $500 after completing the second week. TMC will provide lodging, a continental hotel breakfast every day, lunch on working days, and dinner on the weekend you’re at orientation. Be advised that you will share a room with one other student. Rooms come equipped with small fridges and microwaves are available in public areas.

During orientation, you’ll undergo a mix of classroom lectures and securement training. In the classroom you’ll learn about company policies, hours of service, the in-cab communication systems you’ll be using, and more. Each student will have their own desk, computer, and monitor.

During securement training, you’ll learn how to properly secure a load on a flatbed. During this phase of orientation, you’ll practice securing and tarping metal coils and other kinds of freight to the flatbed using straps and chains. Proper procedures and safety precautions will be the key elements of discussion. Be prepared to lift heavy bundles of tarps, toss straps high into the air, and climb ladders in order to inspect your work.

After securement training, you’ll undergo equipment familiarization, which is exactly what it sounds like, getting yourself familiarized with TMC’s equipment. Now, for those students who have gone through TMC’s in-house CDL training, this will be more of a refresher course than anything else. You’ll practice doing figure eight turns, backing, and other driving maneuvers to help you become familiar with TMC’s trucks and flatbeds.

Before you start your over-the-road (OTR) paid CDL training with a personal trainer, you’ll take the CDL Road Test and finally obtain your commercial driver’s license (CDL). After obtaining your CDL, you should be confident enough to operate a rig.

After you feel comfortable handling a black and chrome TMC rig, it’s time to hit the road for some one-on-one over-the-road training with your personal trainer. The OTR training normally lasts 5 weeks and is treated as a solo driving operation with your trainer observing and mentoring you from the jump seat. You’ll go on actual company runs, picking up and dropping off loads, and getting paid $500 per week. While TMC cannot guarantee any home time during training, most drivers do see home most weekends.

Once your 5-week OTR paid CDL training is complete, TMC will officially hire you on as a driver for at least 1 year, and assign you your own black and chrome Peterbilt truck. You’ll start doing solo runs on your own, making 40 cents per mile, and averaging $55,000 your first year.

After completing your first year as a full-time TMC driver, you’ll be eligible for the Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). Through ESOP you could average an extra $12,000 per year plus contributions toward your retirement with no out-of-pocket costs.

Overall, TMC offers a well-rounded training program for people who want company paid CDL training. They have expert instructors on board as well as driving simulators to help get students ready for the real road. The paid CDL training portion begins from orientation and continues right through your OTR training. Raider Express – Company Paid CDL Training

Although Raider Express is still considered a small company by industry standards, they are still a major contender in the refrigerated transport sector, with over 200 company-owned tractors and 470 53’ refrigerated trailers. Not only is Raider Express able to offer their customers a high level of service, hauling grocery and food products in the contiguous 48 states, they’re able to pay more attention to all the tiny details that encompass running a successful trucking company.

This is probably why Raider Express has such a low turnover rate when you compare them to all the other major trucking companies in the industry. I believe their low turnover rate is due to two things. First, Raider Express has some of the highest standards when it comes to hiring drivers. Second, because they are a smaller company that is both family-owned and operated, they’re able to pay closer attention to the needs of their drivers.

Probably the greatest incentive that Raider Express has to offer inexperienced drivers is their paid CDL training program. Not only is it free, there is absolutely no obligation to pay back the tuition once you graduate from the program. That’s right, you read that correctly. Contractually, you are under no obligation to pay back the tuition or work for Raider Express for a specific period of time after graduating. No up-front cost. No. Strings. Attached.

Sounds great, right? There’s just one catch. You have to prove that you are a Texas resident/driver license holder in order to qualify for the program because Raider Express only employs Texas residents. Alright, I know I just lost some of you there. That’s okay. For the rest of you Texans who are reading this article, you’ll want to pay attention, because I am about to tell you all about the free paid CDL training program that Raider Express offers, and what you need to do to qualify for this unique training program.

Raider Express has CDL training schools in Fort Worth, Texas and Hastings, Nebraska. While there is no tuition cost, you will have to pay for your own meals. Lodging is free up-front but, once you’re hired by Raider Express, $25 will be deducted from your paycheck each until the cost of lodging has been paid back in full.

The Raider Express company paid CDL training program is 8 weeks long and split up into three phases:

Phase 1

During the first phase of the program, you’ll be in school. Phase 1 usually lasts 7 days and includes lectures on trucking systems, proper logging techniques, how to use a permit book, driver safety, commercial driving laws in the state of Texas, and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations and guidelines.

The first week of school is geared towards preparing you mentally to pass the CDL General Knowledge test so you can obtain your commercial learner’s permit (CLP) and move on to the next phase of the training program. You’ll spend most of your time in the classroom but, you’ll also spend time inside the truck as well.

Phase 2

While you’ll split your time between the classroom, the driving range, and the road during weeks 2, 3 and 4, you’ll spend most of your time inside the truck during this phase of the program. You’ll practice operating a full-size rig, mostly on the private driving range, but also on some public roadways as well. You’ll be sharing a truck with 2 or 3 other students, as you practice backing, turning, and gear-shifting.

Phase 3

Once you pass phases 1 and 2, you’ll go through Raider Express’ abbreviated orientation program before starting Phase 3, 28 days of over-the-road (OTR) paid CDL training. It is during this 4-week long phase that you’ll get paid $400 to $500 per week as a trainee.

During your over-the-road (OTR) training, you’ll be observed and guided by your own personal trainer and mentor, one-on-one, as you practice operating the vehicle in real-world driving situations, including city streets, rural roadways, and busy freeways, both in light traffic and heavy traffic. Most of the focus will be on gear-shifting, turning, careful observation of local and state traffic laws, safe driving, driver logging, communication protocol, and proper loading and unloading techniques.

Phase 4

Finally, during Phase 4 of the program, you’ll return to the driving range for one final student safety check where you’ll prove that you know how to adequately operate a full-sized rig. You’ll then take the CDL Skills Test and obtain your Texas commercial driver’s license, before being assigned your own company truck.

Once you are assigned your own company truck, you’ll begin driving solo and getting paid at the starting rate of 30 cents per mile for an average of 2800+ miles weekly. You’ll also get paid a weekly fuel bonus of 2 to 5 cents per mile, and a $500 bonus after you drop your first load.

All in all, the paid CDL training program offered by Raider Express is not only comprehensive with over 275 clock hours of behind-the-wheel training, it is completely free with no obligations whatsoever. In my opinion, that puts Raider Express’ company paid CDL training program at the top of the list.

Werner Enterprises – Company Paid CDL Training

Founded in 1956, Werner has grown to become a premiere transportation and logistics company, operating in North America, South America, Asia, Africa, Europe, and Australia. Werner is among the five largest truckload carriers in the U.S. with a fleet of over 7,400 tractors and 24,000 trailers, providing dedicated, medium-to-long-haul, regional, local van, expedited, flatbed, and temperature-controlled services nationwide with the help of almost 12,000 employees and independent contractors.

From a driver’s standpoint, Werner is one of the best companies to work for. Not only do they have one of the lowest driver out of service (OOS) rates in the nation, they have consistently been financially profitable and are even publicly traded on the NASDAQ under the symbol WERN. If you’re looking for a stable trucking company that will sponsor your CDL training and offer you a stable job upon graduation with great pay and benefits, then Werner is the place to go.

While Werner does not offer tuition-free CDL training up front, as long as you attend one of their 800 approved truck driving schools, they offer tuition reimbursement, up to $7500 paid out at $250 per month, as long as you are employed by Werner. One upside of their paid CDL training program is that you are not required to sign a contract.

Once Werner approves your application, they will set you up with one of their 800 approved truck driving schools. Depending on the school, your CDL training could last anywhere from 3 weeks up to 8 months. You are guaranteed to receive at least 160 hours of classroom and lot training. It is up to you to pay your own tuition and school expenses, however, once you graduate, you will then be enrolled into Werner’s paid orientation program.

Werner’s orientation program is 4 days in length and is held at both the Dallas, Texas terminal and the Werner Enterprises headquarters in Omaha, Nebraska. You’ll spend 2 days on a driving simulator and 2 days in orientation, where you’ll learn about safety procedures and company policies and undergo a DOT physical and drug screening before filling out paperwork.

If you meet all of Werner’s driver qualifications, you’ll then be entered into the Werner Student Driving program. The Student Driving program is 275 hours of over-the-road one-on-one training with a personal trainer. You’ll be paid weekly at a rate of $550. You can also draw $150 every 7 days against your paycheck.

Your personal trainer will sit in the jump seat and mentor you as you go on solo runs for the first half of your training, approximately 138 hours. During the second half of your OTR training, about 137 hours, you’ll both be taking turns at the wheel as you haul freight as a team.

Once you complete the required minimum 275 hours of OTR training, you’ll then take the CDL Road Test and obtain your Class A commercial driver’s license (CDL). A Hazmat Endorsement is not required. Once you obtain your Class A CDL, Werner will hire you on as a full-time driver and assign you your own late-model truck, so you can start doing solo runs on your own.

As a first-year driver, you’ll start out making 35 cents per mile. Teams start out at 42 cents per mile. It’s at this time that you’ll also get paid an extra $250 per month in tuition refund money, as long as you are employed by Werner, up to a maximum of $7500.

Depending upon which account you’re on, you can expect to receive a raise of 1 to 3 cents per mile after your first 6 months as a full-time driver. Over-the-road drivers will get 1 day of home time for every 6 days out. Local drivers will get home every night. Dedicated route drivers will receive 1 1/2 days of home time each week, and teams will be home Friday thru Sunday every 11 days out. Depending on where you live, you may also receive a sign-on bonus if you and another driver are operating as a team.

To be honest, we feel that Werner’s company paid CDL training is not as attractive as the other paid CDL training programs out there. While they do pay you $550 per week during orientation and OTR training, and reimburse your CDL school tuition up to $7500, you are still required to pay all up-front costs, including tuition, meals, testing, permit, and licensing fees. Plus, if their nearest approved truck driver training school is too far for you to commute to, you’ll also need to pay for your own lodging and transportation expenses as well.

  • You’ll receive up to $7500 in tuition reimbursement without having to sign a contract.

  • Your tuition will only be reimbursed by Werner while you are employed by Werner Enterprises.

Carter Express – Company Paid CDL Training

Founded in 1983, Carter Express’s objective is to supply transportation services to their customers in an efficient, economical, and timely manner. They do this all while creating a great work environment for their employees.

Currently, Carter Express has over 800 non-union employees, including professional truck drivers, dock workers, customer service specialists, managers, and office personnel. Because of their dedicated employees and Carter Express’s commitment to safety and excellence, the company has been awarded the Supplier in Excellence Award, the Best in Class Truckload/Milk Run Carrier Award, and numerous safety awards. With one of the lowest accident ratios in the country, it’s no wonder Carter Express has been recognized by the Truckload Carrier Association as first in the nation for safety in the 50 to 99.99 Million Miles Class.

We asked Carter Express’s driver recruitment director a few questions about Carter Express’s company paid CDL training program and here’s what he said:

1. Does Carter Express pay the full tuition cost of the school or must students pay the tuition up-front with a tuition reimbursement later on?

In two of our terminal locations (Anderson, IN and Paragould, AR) we have the ability and partnership to sponsor a student through a truck driving school.

In our other five terminal locations, we do not have partnerships and can do a tuition reimbursement program with the recent CDL school graduate.

Our five other terminal locations include Romulus, MI; Vandalia, OH; Hebron, KY; Andersonville, TN; Laredo, TX.

2. What is the tuition cost that Carter Express covers for the student?

Indiana schools charge $4,400 tuition for a 4 week, 5 days per week course.

Arkansas school charges a $3,300 tuition plus $720 for miscellaneous supplies for their 3 week, 6 days per week course.

Carter Express pays for the entire tuition. The student pays for their CDL permit only.

3. If Carter Express does pay the full tuition amount, are students still allowed to pay their own tuition up-front? Do you provide any kind of discount for students who pay their own tuition up-front?

Students can pay the tuition directly to the school if they desire.

I am not aware of a discount program if the student pays. However, the student is welcome to negotiate directly with the school.

4. What is the name of the truck driving school that you send your sponsored students to?

In Indiana, we use two schools, the Ivy Tech Community College schools (Sage Truck Driving School in Muncie, IN and CTS Truck Driving School in Indianapolis, IN).

5. Are the students required to have their commercial learner’s permit (CLP) before they start school?

Yes.

6. Do you pay for the student’s meals and lodging while they are at the school?

No.

7. Do you pay for the student’s transportation expense to travel to the school?

No.

8. Do the students get paid an allowance while they are at the sponsored truck driving school?

No.

9. Once the students graduate from the school, do they go straight to orientation or do they do their over-the-road training with Carter Express first?

Graduates from the school attend a paid three-day “New Driver Orientation” program.

Once orientation is complete, the graduate begins a paid 5.5 week “Finishing Program” training classes.

10. How much time must students train over-the-road with a Carter Express driver trainer?

During the 5.5 week Finishing Program, the graduates spend about 1.5 weeks in classroom studies, 2 weeks in Range Training, and 2 weeks in local road training.

11. Is the over-the-road training one-on-one with a driver trainer?

Yes.  All “in the truck” training is one-on-one.

12. Is there a minimum number of miles or days that the students must train over-the-road?

Yes. Two weeks of Range Training (on our lot) and two weeks of Road Training.

13. How much do the students get paid each week during their over-the-road training?

$350 for the first week, and $400/week for Week 2 through Week 6.

14. Is the over-the-road training conducted like a solo operation or a team operation?

It’s a solo operation. The certified trainer never drives. The trainer only observes and instructs the driver trainee.

15. Can students request a driver trainer who doesn’t smoke during the OTR training?

Yes.  We have non-smoking trainers, smoking trainers, and female trainers that are assigned to the trainees accordingly.

16. How long is orientation?

Three days.

17. Are trainees paid during orientation? If so, how much do they get paid?

The three days of orientation plus the first 2 days of training are compensated at $350.

 18. Are meals and lodging paid for by Carter Express during orientation?

Yes. All drivers attending orientation are provided meals. Out of town drivers in orientation are provided free hotel lodging.

19. Once the students finish their paid CDL training and are hired by Carter Express as a driver, how long must they drive for Carter Express in order for their CDL training to be free?

Trainees sign a 12-month agreement to drive for Carter Express (for training to be free).

 20. Are students required to sign a contract with a 1 year or 2 year driving commitment?

A one-year agreement is required.

21. What happens if the driver quits before that one-year time period is over?

In Indiana, the one-year agreement states that a driver’s training program is valued at $2,500 (though our actual costs are higher). For each month a driver works for Carter Express, the driver is credited $200. If the driver completes 12 months, we call it “even”.

If a driver works less than 12 months, we ask them to pay us the remaining pro-rated amount for training.

In Arkansas, Carter makes a down payment toward tuition once the student graduates. Then, the school invoices Carter Express $150 per month for each month the graduate works for Carter Express. After 19 months, the tuition is completely paid by Carter Express.

Should the graduate leave Carter’s employment prior to the tuition being paid in full, the school halts invoicing Carter and starts invoicing the graduate directly, each month, until the tuition is paid in full.

22. Does Carter Express deduct a certain amount from the driver’s paycheck each week in order to pay off the tuition amount? If so, how much is deducted from the driver’s paycheck each week? How long is that amount deducted for?

No weekly deductions are made. The signed agreement states that Carter Express has the right to keep the final two weeks of pay. The held pay is applied to the owed amount.

 23. How many cents per mile do drivers make when they first start driving for Carter Express?

Starting drivers make 32.5 cents per mile.

24. When do the drivers get a pay raise and how much is each pay raise?

On their 12-month driving anniversary, the driver’s base-pay is increased from 32.5 cents per mile to 36.5 cents per mile (a 12.3% increase in their mileage rate).

25. How many days of home time does a driver get for each week he/she is on the road?

All Carter Express drivers are guaranteed 2 days at home per week. Reality is, our drivers average two round trip loads per week, so it is normal for drivers to also be home during their five-day work week.

26. What benefits do you offer drivers (medical, dental, vision, and life insurance and a 401(k) retirement savings plan? Is the 401(k) company matched?)?

We offer three medical plans, plus coverage for vision, dental, and life insurance, as well as short-term disability, and long-term disability.

We have 2 paid holidays (Thanksgiving and Christmas) and paid vacation.

We also have a 401(k) retirement savings plan with a dollar for dollar match for the first 2% and a 50 cents on the dollar match for the next 2%.

All full time drivers are eligible for benefits within 90 days of their hire date.

27. Do you offer a fuel bonus? If so, how much?

Yes. Our fuel bonus averages 2 cents per mile.

28. Do you offer layover pay? If so, how much?

Yes. $100 if a driver sits for 24 hours.

29. Do you offer detention pay? If so, how much?

Yes. $15 per hour (the first two hours are free).

30. Do you offer stop pay? If so, how much? Are drivers paid stop pay for each stop they make between the first and last stops?

Yes. We call this bonus a “Performance Bonus”. The bonus is 3% of each driver’s gross wages. It is paid quarterly (every 120 days).

33. How many days of paid vacation are drivers given after their first year, after their 2nd year, after their 3rd year, after their 5th year, etc?

1 week paid vacation after 1 year of service.

2 weeks of paid vacation after 3 years of service.

3 weeks of paid vacation after 10 years of service.

Vacation pay is 1/52 of the last 52 weeks of gross pay (total yearly pay divided by 52).

34. What brand(s) of trucks are the trucks at Carter Express?

We purchase Freightliner and Volvo tractors.

35. Are all the trucks at Carter Express late-model trucks? What is the average age of the trucks?

Yes. The average age of our power units is 2.5 years.

The trucks are governed at 68 mph.

37. Are all of the trucks equipped with APUs?

Yes.

38. Are all the trucks equipped with electronic logs?

Yes.

39. Are all the trucks equipped with GPS navigation units?

Yes.

40. Are Carter Express drivers required to obtain a Class A CDL?

Yes. We do not own any Class B equipment. All our drivers are Class A drivers.

41. Are Carter Express drivers required to have a Hazmat Endorsement on their CDL?

Yes.

42. Are Carter Express drivers required to obtain a valid U.S. passport?

No.

43. Are drivers allowed to have any pets on board? If so, are there any stipulations like a deposit required for the animal and only animals of a certain size/weight allowed?

We do not have a pet policy for our company drivers.

44. Are drivers allowed to have any family members on board? If so, what is the required minimum age of the family member?

Yes. A passenger must be 12 years of age, or older.

Also, a passenger accident/medical policy must be purchased by the driver (the cost is $25 per week).

45. What are the requirements to become a Carter Express driver (in terms of driving record, DUIs, felony convictions, work history, etc)?

You must be at least 21 years of age.

You must Pass a DOT physical.

You must Pass a DOT pre-employment drug test.

You must have an acceptable MVR (motor vehicle report).

You must have an acceptable work record.

You must have an acceptable criminal record.

You must have the ability to a secure a HazMat endorsement.

As you can see, if you want to get paid CDL training from Carter Express, you must be able to pass a background check, be drug and alcohol free, have an acceptable background and work history, be at least 21 years old, and have a clean motor vehicle report. After you obtain your Class A CDL, you’ll have to secure a HazMat endorsement as well.

Overall, Carter Express’s company paid CDL training program is a great program that will help you obtain your CDL without having to pay the high cost of truck driving school. Once you graduate from one of their company sponsored truck driving schools, Carter Express will help you get your truck driving career rolling in the right direction with at least 1 year of guaranteed full-time employment.
