Getting Your CDL in Order to Work for Trucking Companies in WV

The trucking companies in West Virginia will only hire applicants who have obtained their Commercial Drivers License (CDL). To get your CDL, you must first apply for your West Virginia Commercial Learners Permit (CLP). To qualify for a CLP you must have had your Class D driver’s license for at least two years. You must be at least 18 years old to apply. However, if you intend to transport passengers, haul hazardous materials or drive across state lines, you need to be at least 21 years of age.

The first step is to pass the CDL General Knowledge Test with a score of 80% or higher. You’ll want to make sure you set aside time to study for this 50 question multiple choice exam.

Once you have your CLP, there is no required waiting period before taking the CDL Skills Test. Keep in mind that you will need to provide your own commercial vehicle for the test. Your test vehicle must be registered and insured and must be the same class as the license you are applying for. It is important to note that if you take the test in a vehicle that does not have air brakes, your CDL will have an air brakes restriction attached to it.

The CDL Skills Test has 3 distinct parts; a Pre-trip Inspection, a Basic Vehicle Controls Test, and an On-Road Driving Test. If you fail any of the three portions of this exam, you will be required to take the entire test again. You may only take the test once per day.

After you successfully pass, you will be granted a CDL. You are then ready to apply for truck driving jobs in WV.

What do the trucking companies in WV require of their drivers?

Although you do not need a college education or special certifications to apply for truck driving jobs in WV, you are required to have some minimum qualifications. Trucking companies in WV do not have a lot of job stipulations, however, they are strict on the ones they do have. These hiring requirements help protect everyone on the road and uphold regulations set by the Department of Transportation (DOT).

The hiring criteria for CDL jobs in WV usually include one or more of the following:

  • Must have a current CDL-A license
  • Must be at least 21 years old
  • Must have a safe driving record
  • Must have a good employment record
  • Must be able to fulfill the physical demands of the job
  • At least 3 months of tractor trailer experience is preferred
  • Must pass a DOT physical examination and drug screening

Nationally, truck drivers earn an average income between $26,900 and $63,100 yearly with a median income of $41,340.

Some trucking companies in West Virginia report paying truck drivers an average of $1,100 weekly or at least $57,000 yearly. One way to increase your earnings as a truck driver is to qualify for bonuses. You can do this by signing on with your employer, referring other potential employees, staying with your company for a specific amount of time, or by keeping a safe performance record.

Truck driving jobs in WV offer a variety of different benefits including:

  • Tarp pay
  • In-cab scanning
  • Direct deposit
  • Annual raises
  • Quarterly bonuses
  • Paid vacation time
  • Flexible benefits plan

West Virginia Taxes and Cost of Living

When applying for CDL jobs in WV, you will need to factor in living expenses when examining your salary. The good news is that those working for trucking companies in WV will have lower than average living expenses in this state.

Before taxes, the average annual cost of living for one adult without dependents in West Virginia is $20,811. For a family consisting of two adults and two dependents, the average cost of living is $61,391. With an average tax rate of 10.38 percent, West Virginia ranks as #22 in the nation for the lowest average state and county taxes.

If you have been driving for any amount of time, you are well aware that gasoline prices can fluctuate. The national average price for a gallon of diesel fuel as of June 2017 is $2.375, while in West Virginia the price is almost identical at $2.366 per gallon. If you become an owner-operator contracting with trucking companies in WV, you will need to pay your own fuel expenses and keep track of them.

Driving Conditions for Truck Drivers in West Virginia

Truck drivers in West Virginia can face many challenges while on the job, including weather and traffic conditions. This state gets around 30 inches of snow per year, which means you will be required to operate your vehicle in snow, ice, and periods of poor visibility. You may experience delays to your schedule and even safety issues when driving in the winter months.

If you work for trucking companies in West Virginia you will also need to have experience driving a semi truck through the mountains, which means going up against steep inclines and downgrades, as well as winding roads and hazardous curves. This can be more taxing on your truck and more stressful for you.

Expected Growth for Truck Driving Jobs in WV

A lower than average rate of growth for truck driving jobs in West Virginia is predicted between 2014 and 2024 by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. West Virginia is only expected to experience a 1% growth with 190 additional truck driving jobs annually. In comparison, a 6% growth is expected for truck driving jobs across the U.S. which equates to an additional 40,450 job openings for truck drivers nationally.
