Getting Your CDL in Order to Work for Trucking Companies in WV
The trucking companies in West Virginia will only hire applicants who have obtained their Commercial Drivers License (CDL). To get your CDL, you must first apply for your West Virginia Commercial Learners Permit (CLP). To qualify for a CLP you must have had your Class D driver’s license for at least two years. You must be at least 18 years old to apply. However, if you intend to transport passengers, haul hazardous materials or drive across state lines, you need to be at least 21 years of age.
The first step is to pass the CDL General Knowledge Test with a score of 80% or higher. You’ll want to make sure you set aside time to study for this 50 question multiple choice exam.
Once you have your CLP, there is no required waiting period before taking the CDL Skills Test. Keep in mind that you will need to provide your own commercial vehicle for the test. Your test vehicle must be registered and insured and must be the same class as the license you are applying for. It is important to note that if you take the test in a vehicle that does not have air brakes, your CDL will have an air brakes restriction attached to it.
The CDL Skills Test has 3 distinct parts; a Pre-trip Inspection, a Basic Vehicle Controls Test, and an On-Road Driving Test. If you fail any of the three portions of this exam, you will be required to take the entire test again. You may only take the test once per day.
After you successfully pass, you will be granted a CDL. You are then ready to apply for truck driving jobs in WV.
What do the trucking companies in WV require of their drivers?
Although you do not need a college education or special certifications to apply for truck driving jobs in WV, you are required to have some minimum qualifications. Trucking companies in WV do not have a lot of job stipulations, however, they are strict on the ones they do have. These hiring requirements help protect everyone on the road and uphold regulations set by the Department of Transportation (DOT).
The hiring criteria for CDL jobs in WV usually include one or more of the following:
- Must have a current CDL-A license
- Must be at least 21 years old
- Must have a safe driving record
- Must have a good employment record
- Must be able to fulfill the physical demands of the job
- At least 3 months of tractor trailer experience is preferred
- Must pass a DOT physical examination and drug screening
