Truck Driving Jobs in Wisconsin

Apply for Trucking Jobs in Wisconsin

In the U.S., the commercial trucking industry is responsible for the shipment of 70% of all goods domestically. It should come as no surprise then, that the commercial trucking industry is expected to see a 6% increase of truck driving jobs nationwide over the next decade.

In the state of Wisconsin, trucking companies are experiencing a much higher than average growth rate. In fact, trucking companies in Wisconsin expect to see a 13% increase in new truck driving jobs through the year 2024. That’s more than double the national average!

This explosive growth of 1,570 additional yearly job openings is due in part to the baby boomer generation slowly retiring from the trucking industry and a recovering economy. Based on these two factors, truck driving jobs in Wisconsin have a bright outlook.

Getting Your CDL in Order to Work for Trucking Companies in Wisconsin

You are legally required to have a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) in order to be employed by trucking companies in Wisconsin. To get your CDL, you must first obtain your Wisconsin Commercial Learners Permit (CLP). You must be at least 18 years of age to get your CLP. You must score an 80% or higher on the CDL General Knowledge Exam. This written test consists of 50 multiple choice questions and may be administered in paper form or by a computer. Once you pass the exam and meet all of the other requirements, such as submitting the proper documents and paying the required fees, you will be granted a CLP.

After 14 days, you can then schedule your CDL Skills Test. Keep in mind that your commercial learner’s permit is only valid for 180 days. If you do not pass all three parts of the CDL Skills Test in that time frame, you will be required to renew your CLP. The three parts of the CDL Skills Test are the Pre-trip Inspection, the Basic Vehicle Controls Test, and the On-Road Driving Test.

On the same day that you take this test, you can also take the CDL endorsement exams. Although endorsements are not required, they can be helpful. With a Tank Vehicles, HazMat, or Doubles and Triples endorsement you are eligible to operate a wider variety of vehicles and are more marketable to Wisconsin trucking companies. In fact, your employer may even pay you to take these exams.

Once you have passed the CDL Skills Test, paid the required fees, and submitted the proper documents, you can then begin applying for truck driving jobs in Wisconsin.

What do the trucking companies in Wisconsin require of their drivers?

The trucking companies in Wisconsin are committed to safety, customer satisfaction, and abiding by state and local laws. For these reasons, they have set certain job qualifications in place. These qualifications are not identical for all trucking jobs in Wisconsin, however, they are usually similar.

Common job qualifications for trucking companies in Wisconsin include one or more of the following:

  • Must have a Class A CDL
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • At least 3 months of tractor-trailer experience is preferred
  • Must have no more than 3 accidents within the last three years
  • Must have no more than 3 moving violations in the last three years
  • Must pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical and drug test

Truck driving jobs in Wisconsin: Salary and Benefits

For not requiring college courses or a special certification, trucking jobs in Wisconsin offer an amazing salary. As of 2016, truck driving jobs in Wisconsin provided annual salaries of between $28,680 and $61,070 with the median income of a truck or tractor-trailer driver being $40,550. Nationally, truck drivers will make between $26,900 and $63,100 annually with a median income of $41,340, according to the United States Department of Labor. However, these salaries are only averages and are not set in stone.

There are several ways you can increase your salary when working for trucking companies in Wisconsin. One of these ways is to obtain a HazMat, Tank Vehicles, or Doubles and Triples endorsement on your CDL. Having these endorsements can make you eligible for bonuses or for a higher cent per mile pay with many of the trucking companies in Wisconsin.

Another way to make more money is through various bonuses. You can get a bonus for simply signing on with truck driving jobs in Wisconsin, for referring other potential employees, for remaining employed with the company for a certain period of time, and for outstanding performance and safety habits.

The trucking companies in Wisconsin offer many of the following benefits:

  • Weekly pay

Wisconsin Taxes and Cost of Living

Your expenses are just as important to consider as your salary when it comes to managing money. The cost of living as well as state and local taxes are two types of expenses that you will need to factor into your budget when applying for positions with Wisconsin trucking companies.

Wisconsin has an average county and state tax rate of 13.60%, placing it #3 for the highest local taxes in the nation. Typical living expenses in Wisconsin for one adult without children are $21,998 before standard wage deductions. The cost of living for a household of two adults and two children is $70,469 before taxes.

While you will not be required to pay your own fuel expense as an employee, if you decide to become an owner-operator, you will be responsible for paying for your own diesel fuel. As of May 2017, the national average price for a gallon of diesel fuel is $2.375, while in Wisconsin the price is slightly lower at $2.356. Keep in mind that the price of diesel fuel will fluctuate from day to day and from gas station to gas station.

Driving Conditions for Truck Drivers in Wisconsin

When it comes to driving conditions, truck drivers working for any of the trucking companies in Wisconsin will need to be prepared for winter driving conditions. You should expect road closures and delays due to snow and ice that require you to drive at slower speeds. If you drive a flatbed, you will be required to stop and protect your load by covering it with tarps and tying it down with straps. Be prepared to fasten chains to your tires during heavy snow as well.

If you apply for trucking jobs in Wisconsin, be prepared for the possibility of being stuck in congested traffic when driving near heavily populated cities such as Milwaukee, Madison, Green Bay, and Kenosha. These driving conditions can add wear and tear to your vehicle as well as mental and physical stress to you, the driver.

Expected Growth for Truck Driving Jobs in Wisconsin

Between 2014 and 2024, the United States Department of Labor predicts a rate of growth for truck driving jobs in Wisconsin that is more than double the national average. This state is expected to see a 13% growth with an additional 1,570 job openings each year. Across the United States, jobs for people driving heavy and tractor-trailers are expected to increase by 40,450 between 2014 and 2024, which represents a 6% growth overall.
