Getting Your CDL in Order to Work for Trucking Companies in Washington

If you want to work for any of the various trucking companies in Washington, you will need to get a Commercial Drivers License (CDL). The first step to getting your CDL is applying for your Washington Commercial Learners Permit (CLP). The most important part of this process is passing the CDL General Knowledge exam. To do so, you must score an 80% or higher on this 50 question multiple choice exam.

After you have been issued a CLP, you can schedule an appointment to take the CDL Skills Test. It must be the same type and class as the commercial vehicle you will be operating after you receive your CDL. Your test vehicle must also be registered and insured.

The Pre-trip Inspection, Basic Controls Test, and On-Road Driving Test are the three main parts of the CDL Skills Test. You must pass each test in consecutive order. You are not allowed to skip over any part of this three-part test.

After you have submitted the required documents, paid the mandatory fees, and passed the CDL Skills Test, you will then receive your CDL. You may then apply for truck driving jobs in Washington State.

What do the trucking companies in Washington require of their drivers?

In order to work for the trucking companies in Washington, you must meet some basic job qualifications. These requirements are in accordance with the Department of Transportation (DOT), Washington state laws, and individual company policies. They help to protect Washington trucking companies, the general public, and you as their driver.

The qualifications for CDL jobs in Washington State commonly include one or more of the following:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Must possess a valid Class A CDL
  • Must have a good safe driving record
  • No more than 2 moving violations in the last 2 years
  • No more than 1 preventable accident in the last 3 years
  • No DWI/DUI in the last 5 years and no failed or refused drug tests
  • Must pass a DOT physical and a Functional Capacity Exam (FCE)

Truck Driving Jobs in Washington State: Taxes and Cost of Living

Making more money at CDL jobs in Washington State or anywhere else won’t benefit you much if there is a high cost of living in the state. It is vital that you take living expenses into account when calculating the value of the salary and benefits you will receive when working for any of the trucking companies in Washington.

Washington has the 17th highest county and state taxes in the nation with an average tax rate of 11.72%. A single adult with no dependents in Washington will have an annual average living expense of $24,288 before any taxes are applied. For two adults with two dependents, the average living expenses are $67,663. These living expenses are slightly higher than average for the rest of the country.

When considering any of the truck driving jobs in Washington State, you may also need to factor in the price of diesel fuel. Truck drivers who are owner-operators will be required to pay for their own fuel. The national average price for a gallon of diesel fuel as of June 2017 is $2.376, while in Washington the price is significantly higher at $2.868.

Driving Conditions for Truck Drivers in Washington

If you decide to apply for trucking jobs in Washington State, be aware that road and weather conditions can be a frustrating aspect of your job. You may experience delays due to heavy traffic in larger cities like Seattle or Walla Walla. You will likely need to drive through the mountains in this state which can take more time and require greater mental focus.

In addition to mountains and traffic congestion, you will inevitably be faced with driving in the snow and ice. Some areas of this state can receive more than 50 inches of snowfall per year. You may be delayed due to road closures, having to place chains on your tires, or having to secure and protect your cargo if you are driving a flatbed rig.

Expected Growth for Truck Driving Jobs in Washington State

The U.S. Department of Labor is expecting an average rate of growth that is more than double that of the national average for truck driving jobs in Washington State. A 13% growth rate with an additional 1,100 truck driving jobs between 2014 and 2024 is predicted. In comparison, only a 6% growth rate is expected by the U.S. Department of Labor for truck driving jobs across the nation. This means an additional 40,450 job openings for American truck drivers.
