Getting Your CDL in Order to Work for Trucking Companies in Virginia

You must obtain your Commercial Drivers License (CDL) in order meet the hiring requirements of truck driving jobs in Virginia. Before getting your CDL, you must first obtain your Virginia Commercial Learners Permit (CLP). Among other steps, getting your CLP requires you to pass a written exam made up of 50 multiple choice questions. You must score an 80% or higher on this CDL General Knowledge exam in order to get your CLP.

If you plan on applying for any truck driving jobs in VA that require you to drive across state lines, transport passengers, or haul hazardous materials, you must be at least 21 years of age. All other drivers must be at least 18 years old to obtain a commercial learner’s permit.

There is a mandatory waiting period of at least 30 days from the time you have earned your CLP until you can take the CDL Skills Test. You will need to bring your own commercial vehicle for the test. The vehicle will need to be insured and the same class as the CDL license you are applying for. There are 3 portions to the CDL Skills Test; a Pre-trip Inspection, a Basic Vehicle Controls Test, and an On-Road Driving Test. You must pass all three portions in order to get your CDL.

At this time, you should also be able to test for any endorsements you wish to add to your license. These include Tank Vehicles, HazMat, and Doubles and Triples. While these CDL endorsements are not required to qualify for most truck driving jobs in VA, they can provide you with more job opportunities and better pay. Some trucking companies in Virginia will even pay you to obtain one or more of these endorsements.

After you have obtained your CDL, you can begin applying for CDL jobs in VA.

What do the trucking companies in Virginia require of their drivers?

Every trucking company in the United States has certain job qualifications that drivers must meet in order to obtain employment. Virginia trucking companies are no exception. These requirements help protect all drivers on the road and are based primarily on federal and state laws. These job stipulations can vary among companies but are usually quite similar.

Keep in mind that these hiring requirements will vary based on the type of trucking job you are applying for. Some of the most common applicant qualifications required by the trucking companies in Virginia are as follows:

  • You must have a valid Class A CDL
  • You must be at least 21 years old
  • You must pass a background check and a drug screening
  • At least six months of recent driving experience is preferred

Virginia Truck Driving Salary and Benefits

Typically, jobs that do not require a college degree or additional certifications will be lower paying jobs. However, you may be surprised to learn just how much you can make working at truck driving jobs in VA.

As of 2016, Virginia trucking companies provided truck drivers with a salary between $26,480 and $60,340 per year, with a median income of $39,150. Nationally, the average salary is slightly higher than what trucking companies in Virginia offer their truck drivers. On average, American truck drivers will make between $26,900 and $63,100 annually with a median income of $41,340, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Truck drivers working for Virginia trucking companies report average salaries between $67,000 to $70,000 per year. If you have obtained any endorsements on your CDL, you will likely be able to earn more cents per mile or even a higher sign-on bonus. Truck drivers with more experience will also be paid at higher rates than rookie drivers.

It is common practice for Virginia truck driving companies to offer some of the following benefits:

  • Up to $8,000 sign-on bonus
  • Home weekly
  • Paid vacation and holidays
  • Newer equipment
  • 99% no touch freight
  • Excellent medical, dental, and vision benefits
  • 401(k) retirement savings plan
  • Pet policy
  • Rider policy
  • $6,000 in tuition reimbursement
  • Company-paid life insurance and short-term disability benefits
  • Company-provided uniform program
  • Wells Fargo banking products
  • Career advancement opportunities
  • Referral rewards program
  • Weekly direct payroll deposits
  • Associate discounts on vehicles, computers, cell phone service, and more

Virginia Taxes and Cost of Living

If you are applying for CDL jobs in VA, you should not only be concerned with your potential salary but also with what your living expenses will be. You will want to make sure that the salary offered by trucking companies in Virginia will be enough to cover your average living expenses and put some extra money in your pocket.

In Virginia, the average living costs for a single adult without kids are $27,483 prior to any applicable taxes. For a family with two adults and two kids, the average living costs before taxes are $67,870. Virginia ranks in 27th place for the lowest city and state tax among all 50 states and the District of Columbia with an average tax rate of 10.89%.

Another expense you may need to be concerned about is fuel. If you decide to become an owner-operator partnering with the many trucking companies in Virginia, you will need to pay for your own diesel fuel. This cost can impact you greatly. As of June 2017, the national average price for a gallon of diesel fuel is $2.376, while in Virginia the average is much lower at $2.150 per gallon.

Driving Conditions for Truck Drivers in Virginia

Even though the truck driving jobs in VA come with many benefits, there are some drawbacks as well. For instance, truck drivers in this state will need to drive in the mountains and in winter weather. Both of these conditions can cause increased mental stress and increased wear and tear on your truck.

As a driver in this state, you may need to drive in heavy traffic in Richmond and Norfolk year round, as well as in heavy tourist traffic in the Virginia Beach area during the summer months. You should also be aware that Arlington has the worst bottleneck traffic in Virginia. These traffic conditions may cause delays in your schedule, wear and tear on your truck, and job-related stress.

Expected Growth for Truck Driving Jobs in VA

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the state of Virginia will experience an average rate of job growth for those in the trucking industry. A 6% growth rate is expected between 2014 and 2024 which equals an additional 920 truck driving jobs in Virginia each year. In comparison, truck driving jobs across the country are expected to increase by 40,450 between 2014 and 2024, which is a 6% growth overall.
