Getting Your CDL in Order to Work for Trucking Companies in Virginia
You must obtain your Commercial Drivers License (CDL) in order meet the hiring requirements of truck driving jobs in Virginia. Before getting your CDL, you must first obtain your Virginia Commercial Learners Permit (CLP). Among other steps, getting your CLP requires you to pass a written exam made up of 50 multiple choice questions. You must score an 80% or higher on this CDL General Knowledge exam in order to get your CLP.
If you plan on applying for any truck driving jobs in VA that require you to drive across state lines, transport passengers, or haul hazardous materials, you must be at least 21 years of age. All other drivers must be at least 18 years old to obtain a commercial learner’s permit.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the state of Virginia will experience an average rate of job growth for those in the trucking industry. A 6% growth rate is expected between 2014 and 2024 which equals an additional 920 truck driving jobs in Virginia each year. In comparison, truck driving jobs across the country are expected to increase by 40,450 between 2014 and 2024, which is a 6% growth overall.
