Getting Your CDL in Order to Work for Trucking Companies in RI

By law, you must have your Commercial Drivers License (CDL), to be eligible for truck driving jobs in Rhode Island. This process begins with receiving your Rhode Island Commercial Learners Permit (CLP) after paying all applicable fees, providing required documentation, and passing a CDL general knowledge written test. This test consists of 50 questions and you must get an 80% in order to pass.

Your CLP is valid for 90 days, although you may renew it once for another 90 day period. During this time, you will need to schedule your CDL road exam. If you successfully pass this test, you will be granted a CDL and can then apply for jobs with the trucking companies in RI.

You will need to provide your own commercial vehicle to take this exam. Your vehicle must be the same type and class as the license you are applying for. You will also be required to provide proof of registration and insurance.

This exam will begin with a Pre-Trip Inspection. If your commercial vehicle is not safe to drive on public roads, you will not be permitted to continue with the exam. Next, you will take the Basic Vehicle Controls Test. This test ensures that you know how to perform basic maneuvers in your vehicle. You must also pass this portion to move on to the final testing phase. Finally, the On-Road Driving test will allow you to demonstrate your knowledge about the rules of the road and operating your commercial vehicle safely.
