Getting Your CDL in Order to Work for Nevada Trucking Companies

You are legally required to obtain your Commercial Drivers License (CDL), to be employed in truck driving jobs in Nevada. To get your CDL, you must first obtain your Nevada Commercial Learners Permit (CLP). The process for doing this includes taking a CDL general knowledge written exam, paying the required fees, and providing the required documentation.

After you have your CLP, you will qualify to take the CDL road test. This road test will need to be completed in a vehicle that is the same type as the commercial license you are applying for. It will also need to be insured and proof of insurance will be required. The road test ensures that you have the skills and knowledge to safely and effectively operate a commercial vehicle.

At this time, you will also have the option of taking the test for license endorsements such as Tank Vehicles, HazMat, or Doubles and Triples. These endorsements generally give you more employment opportunities and increase your chances of acquiring a higher rate of pay.

What do Nevada trucking companies require of their drivers?

Nevada trucking companies are highly committed to the safety of everyone on the road and to customer satisfaction. For these reasons, they set certain hiring requirements in place. Basic hiring requirements are not the same for every company, however, they are usually similar.

Common hiring requirements include one or more of the following:

  • Must possess a Class A CDL
  • Must be at least 21 years old
  • Must be able to lift 50 to 100 pounds
  • Must have a current 1 year DOT medical card
  • Must not have more than 1 moving violation in the last 3 years
  • Must have 1 year of full-time verifiable driving experience in the last 3 years

Nevada Truck Driving Salary and Benefits

Even if driving a tractor-trailer is something you have always wanted to do, your paycheck and available benefits are also an important factor when choosing your future career and employer. Truck driving jobs in Las Vegas, Reno and other cities in Nevada offer many attractive benefits and better than average pay.

The trucking companies in Nevada generally pay their truck drivers notably more than the national average for this career field. As of 2016, truck driving jobs in Nevada usually paid truck drivers between $33,900 and $65,710 per year, with the median income of a truck or tractor-trailer driver being $48,990. Nationally, truck drivers will make between $26,900 and $63,140 each year with a median income of $41,340, according to the United States Department of Labor.

Average salaries of $60,000 to $80,000 are common among those who have truck driving jobs in Nevada. Trucking companies in Las Vegas, Reno and other cities frequently offer the opportunity to earn bonuses as much as $10,000 for signing on, relocating, loyalty, and referring other employees.

You can also increase your salary when working for Nevada trucking companies by getting your Doubles/Triples or another type of endorsement on your license. In fact, some companies will even pay you a higher wage if you have these endorsements on your CDL.

Nevada truck driving companies usually offer at least some of the following benefits to those working in Nevada trucking jobs:

  • Fuel bonuses
  • Productivity bonuses
  • Idle bonuses
  • Great home time
  • Weekly pay
  • Tuition reimbursement
  • Newer trucks
  • In-cab internet and DIRECTV
  • Pet and rider programs
  • Health, vision, dental, disability, and life insurance (low premiums)

Nevada Taxes and Cost of Living

The average cost of living is a figure that represents what the typical living expenses of an area will be. These are important figures to examine when determining what your take home pay will be when working for Nevada trucking companies.

The average cost of living is somewhat higher in Nevada than it is in other states. Typical living expenses for a household of one adult without children in Nevada is $22,102 before standard wage deductions. The same expenses for a household with two adults and two children in Nevada are $68,225. On a more positive note, out of all 50 states and our nation’s capital, Nevada ranks 6th for lowest state and local taxes with a rate of 7.66%.

If you are employed as a company truck driver in Nevada, you will not need to pay your own fuel expenses. On the other hand, if you opt to become an owner-operator working with one of the many trucking companies in Nevada, you will be required to pay for your own diesel fuel. This makes the price of fuel an important factor when determining how much money you will actually make. As of May 2017, the national average price for a gallon of diesel fuel is $2.338, while in Nevada the price is significantly higher at $2.721.

Driving Conditions for Truck Drivers in Nevada

If you work for Nevada trucking companies, you will need to be prepared for a variety of road and traffic conditions. Nevada is the driest state in the nation, yet can still get snow and rain. It is also known for its extremely high temperatures. Drivers working for any of the trucking companies in Nevada will be required to drive on rural roads and roads with major traffic congestion due to tourism and high populations, such as those near Reno or Las Vegas.

In addition, Nevada does have some mountainous terrain. This will potentially increase the chances of stress on both truck drivers and their trucks. Drivers will need to be prepared to drive on steep inclines and downgrades.

Finally, because certain parts of Nevada are made up of large desert areas, like Death Valley, for instance, you should keep in mind that fuel stations and rest stops will be few and far in between in these sparsely populated areas. While you’ll most likely be able to stick to the freeways and major roadways on most of your deliveries, there may be certain times when you’ll have to drive through these desert areas in order to reach your final destination. You’ll want to make sure you perform a thorough and complete pre-trip inspection if you know for sure that you’ll be driving your rig through these areas.

Expected Growth for Truck Driving Jobs in Nevada

Nevada is one of the top states when it comes to growth for those in the trucking industry. Between 2014 and 2024, the United States Department of Labor predicts a much higher than average rate of growth for truck driving jobs in Nevada, in comparison with the same job in other states. Nevada is expected to see a 27% growth with an additional 450 job openings each year. Across the United States, jobs for people driving heavy and tractor-trailers are expected to grow by 40,450 between 2014 and 2024, which represents only a 6% growth overall.
