Getting Your CDL in Order to Work for the Trucking Companies in Arizona

To get your Commercial Drivers License(CDL), you must first obtain your Arizona Commercial Learners Permit (CLP). To get your CLP, you will need to be at least 18 to 21 years of age, depending on the type of endorsement you are seeking. You must also prove your age and fixed and permanent Arizona residency. Additionally, you will be required to provide a signed Medical Examiners Certificate and a Medical Examination Report. All drivers who wish to obtain their Arizona CLP are required to pass a written and driving exam, as well as pay the applicable fees.

What do Arizona trucking companies require of their drivers?

In addition to obtaining your CDL licensure, most Arizona trucking companies require their drivers to meet other qualifications. These requirements are put in place to protect all drivers in this state as well as those working in CDL jobs in AZ. Many trucking companies in Arizona also require that anyone applying for truck driving jobs in AZ have excellent driving records, including no recent history of moving violations or DUIs. Standards will vary from one company to another, however, some common hiring requirements include:

  • Must hold a Class A CDL
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Must have 1 year or more of tractor trailer experience
  • Must pass a DOT physical and drug test

Arizona Truck Driving Salary and Benefits

No matter how much you like or dislike a job, salary and benefits are an important factor when it comes to employment with any of the trucking companies in Arizona. Truck driving jobs in Arizona pay a weekly or mileage salary. Drivers can also earn additional money by receiving bonuses for referrals, signing-on, and staying with the company for a set amount of time.

Arizona trucking companies generally pay slightly better than the national average for this career field. Truck driving jobs in Arizona usually pay between $27,600 and $61,300 annually, with the median income of a truck or tractor-trailer driver being $39,700 as of 2016. Nationally, truck drivers make between $26,900 and $63,100 each year.

Trucking jobs in Arizona pay up to 51 cents per mile, with top solo earners being able to make $60,000 per year or more. Team drivers can earn as much as 58.5 cents per mile and gross more than $126,000 annually. Hazmat drivers in this state can even earn up to 60 cents per mile.

You may also be able to earn sign on bonuses of between $2,000 and $7,500, depending on the company, the type of truck you drive, and materials you will be transporting. With some trucking companies in Arizona, you may even have the opportunity to earn referral bonuses and loyalty bonuses for as much as $10,000.

Common benefits offered by Arizona trucking companies include the following and more:

  • 85% revenue pay
  • Premium choice freight
  • Choose your home time
  • No competition with company drivers
  • High weekly settlements
  • Excellent contractor support
  • Significant fuel discounts
  • Health, dental and vision insurance
  • 401(k) retirement savings plan
  • Paid vacation
  • Direct deposit
  • Annual bonuses
  • Pet policy
  • Rider program

Arizona Taxes and Cost of Living

Even when a state pays a high salary for those working in the truck driving industry, taxes, the local cost of living, and other factors need to be considered in order to determine how much money you will actually make.

The average cost of living for a single person with no children in Arizona is $22,344 before taxes. For a family consisting of two adults and two children, the average cost of living is $67,697 before taxes. Out of all 50 states, Arizona has the 15th lowest state and local tax rate at 9.60%.

Fuel prices should also be a factor of consideration. As of May 2017, the national average price for a gallon of diesel fuel is $2.524, while in Arizona the price is nearly identical at $2.525. Keep in mind that these prices frequently fluctuate.

Driving Conditions for Truck Drivers in Arizona

When it comes to CDL jobs in Arizona, they are often preferred over employment in other states. This is due, in part, to the warmer Arizona weather and better driving conditions. You are highly unlikely to run into icy road conditions or winter weather in this state, which can delay your work and increase your risk of an accident.

However, extreme heat can be a downfall for many who drive for trucking companies in Arizona. It can cause trucks to overheat and need repairs or extra time on the job to cool down. The upside is that unless you are driving through a metropolitan area such as Phoenix, you are unlikely to run into heavy or stop-and-go traffic.

Expected Growth for Truck Driving Jobs in Arizona

Truck driving jobs in AZ are predicted to see extensive growth over the next several years, in comparison with other job markets and in other states. Across the United States, jobs for people driving heavy and tractor-trailers are expected to grow by 40,450 openings by 2024, which represents a 6% of what it was in 2014.

For trucking jobs in AZ, there is a much greater expected rate of growth by 2024 at 18%, which equates to an additional 830 job openings.
