Diesel Equipment Mechanic
The year-long Diesel Equipment Mechanic Diploma program at North Central Technical College provides individuals with the basic entry-level skills necessary to properly service, maintain, and repair medium and heavy-duty trucks. the Diesel Equipment Mechanic Diploma program is a hybrid program that consists of both classroom instruction and practical hands-on training.
In the classroom, students learn diesel theory and the fundamentals of the diesel engine, gaining a basic understanding about the design, function, and principles of operation of the entire diesel engine system through in-depth lectures and class discussions.
Students will strengthen their understanding of verbal and written communications as well as technical mathematics, while developing critical thinking and reasoning skills as they study detailed learning materials and complete written assignments and class projects. Shop safety, customer service, and service record-keeping will also be discussed.
Inside the state-of-the-art training facility, students obtain valuable hands-on training, as they watch and learn how to inspect, diagnose, and repair diesel engines, diesel brake systems, diesel electrical systems, diesel electronic systems, diesel drive trains, and heavy duty steering and suspension systems. Students will also gain hands-on experience in welding for diesel mechanics and proper preventative maintenance procedures.
Students will learn on the most up-to-date digital diagnostic machines as they diagnose and repair the computerized auxiliary systems found on today’s diesel engines. Technical manuals, wiring schematics, precision gauges, electronic multi-meters, lathes, grinders, cutting torches, impact wrenches, and screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, and other hand tools will be used throughout the program to repair and rebuild diesel engines and their integrated system components, providing students with job-simulated experience as they disassemble, inspect, troubleshoot, repair, and reassemble the various diesel engines utilized by today’s medium and heavy-duty trucks and heavy machinery.
Throughout the hands-on training portion of the program, each student will strengthen their mechanical, analytical, and technical skills. Students will also practice shop safety and effective time management as they work together to complete each and every task assigned to them by their instructors in a timely and thorough manner. Ethics, integrity, and professionalism will also be stressed throughout the one-year Diesel Equipment Mechanic program at North Central Technical College.

Students must also take College Mathematics, Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Prep, and either English Composition I or Written Communication in order to meet the 32 credit hour requirements of the Technical Diploma program. Students are required to finish each class and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0, the equivalent of a “C” grade, in order to graduate.

The mean annual wage for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists working in the United States in 2014 was $45,160, while the mean salary for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists employed in the state of Wisconsin was $42,710 yearly and $20.54 hourly, just 5% lower than the national average.
