Diesel Mechanics/Heavy Truck Maintenance  

The Diesel Mechanics/Heavy Truck Maintenance program at Tri-County Driving Academy is designed to give individuals the knowledge and skills needed for an exciting and excellent paying career as a diesel and heavy truck mechanic. The program provides students with a strong foundation in the most up-to-date diesel technologies used in the diesel truck and heavy equipment service and repair field.

Students are taught such topics as diesel theory and the fundamentals of the diesel engine system in the classroom, learning about the design, functions, and principles of operation of the diesel engine system, through in-depth lectures and study materials. Students will develop strong communication, comprehension, and problem solving skills through class discussions and written assignments. 

Inside the state-of-the-art training facility is where students obtain valuable hands-on training,  as they learn how to inspect, diagnose, and repair diesel engines, truck brakes, truck electrical systems, truck electronic systems, hydro mechanical diesel fuel systems, truck steering systems, truck suspension systems, truck driveline systems, truck wheel alignment systems, and truck heating and air conditioning systems. Students will also gain hands-on experience in computerized truck and bus management systems

Students will learn on the most up-to-date computerized diagnostic equipment as they diagnose and repair the computerized auxiliary systems found on today’s diesel engines. Service manuals, wiring diagrams, precision measuring instruments, machine tools, power tools, and hand tools will also be used throughout the program as students learn how to repair and rebuild diesel engines and their integrated system components by disassembling, inspecting, testing, repairing, and reassembling various diesel engines.

Students will learn the value of teamwork and time management as they work both independently, and in groups to successfully complete every task assigned to them by their instructors in an efficient and timely manner. Shop safety, professionalism, and workplace ethics will also be stressed. All applicants must be at least 18 years of age.

The Diesel Mechanics/Heavy Truck Maintenance Course Outline

The curriculum of the Diesel Mechanics/Heavy Truck Maintenance program consists of the following career-specific courses:

  • Diesel Engine Fundamentals
  • Hydro Mechanical Diesel Fuel Injection Systems
  • Computerized Truck & Bus Systems Management
  • Truck Electricity & Electronics
  • Truck Steering, Suspension & Wheels
  • Truck Brakes
  • Truck Driveline Systems
  • Truck Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning Systems

Students must successfully complete each class and maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA, the equivalent of a “C” grade, in order to graduate.

What to Expect After Graduation

As the diesel industry continues to grow rapidly, job opportunities for qualified diesel mechanics is expected to increase 11% by the year 2020, as fast as average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The mean annual wage for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists working in the United States in 2014 was $45,160, while the mean salary for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists employed in the state of Virginia was $43,200 yearly and $20.77 hourly, just 4% lower than the national average.

Graduates of the Diesel Mechanics/Heavy Truck Maintenance program at Tri-County Driving Academy will be well-qualified to gain an entry-level position as a heavy duty truck and diesel maintenance mechanic. Graduates can expect to secure employment in the transportation, construction, agriculture, mining, gas compression, and oil and natural gas exploration and extraction industries. 

The Undergraduate Certificate

Tri-County Driving Academy offers an 11-month Undergraduate Certificate in Diesel Mechanics/Heavy Truck Maintenance. This program is Pell Grant eligible.
