Marine Technology
The Marine Technology program at New England Institute of Technology is designed to help individuals develop hands-on skills in the installation, service, and repair of mechanical, electrical, electronic, and hydraulic systems utilized by recreational and commercial marine vessels.
In the classroom, students learn marine diesel theory, engine design, function, and principles of operation. Students develop important comprehension and communication skills as they participate in lectures, practice computation, and complete written assignments. Students also learn and discuss OSHA maritime industry safety and the fundamentals of marina and boatyard management.
Inside the laboratory, students obtain practical hands-on training, as they learn how to install, repair, and maintain marine diesel engines, marine gas engines, outboard engines, electrical systems, electronic systems, hydraulic systems, fuel injection systems, sterndrives, and inboard drives. Students also learn, hands-on, how to repair, refinish, and airbrush fiberglass hulls and marine housing. Oxy and electric welding and cutting for marine diesel mechanics is also discussed and practiced.
By disassembling, inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and reassembling marine diesel engines using sophisticated diagnostic equipment, precision measuring instruments, wiring diagrams, tech manuals, power tools, and hand tools, students learn hands-on, how to properly troubleshoot, service, and repair both gas and diesel-powered engines and their integrated auxiliary systems.
Students learn about the value of interpersonal communication and teamwork, as well as how to manage their time wisely, as they work both independently, and in groups, to complete every task assigned to them by their instructors in an efficient and timely manner.
Shop safety, professionalism, a positive workplace attitude, and effective customer service skills are also discussed and practiced in the Marine Technology program at New England Institute of Technology. Students can also choose to participate in an internship where they will gain valuable job skills before they graduate.
From Graduation to Occupation
Students who successfully complete the Marine Technology program at New England Institute of Technology will qualify for entry-level positions as marine diesel mechanics in boatyard operations, vessel manufacturing, engine repair, marine electronics installation, and more.
As the diesel industry continues to grow rapidly, job opportunities for qualified diesel mechanics is expected to increase 11% by the year 2020, as fast as average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The mean annual wage for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists working in the United States in 2014 was $45,160, while the mean salary for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists employed in the state of Rhode Island was $47,360 yearly and $22.77 hourly, 5% higher than the national average.
The Two-Year Associate in Science Degree
New England Institute of Technology offers a two-year Associate in Science Degree in Marine Technology. This program is Pell Grant eligible.

Students must also take Introduction to Introduction to College Math or Applied Math for Business, Applied Physics & Lab, Introduction to Writing and Workplace Communication or Critical Thinking and College Writing, Introduction to Information technology or Computer and Networking Fundamentals or Accounting Fundamentals, one Communications Core Elective, one Social Sciences Core Elective, and two Humanities/Arts/Foreign Language Core Electives, in order to meet the 95 credit hour requirements of the Associate in Science Degree program. To be eligible to graduate, each student is required to complete every class and maintain at least a 2.0 GPA, the equivalent of a “C” grade.
