Diesel and Heavy Equipment Technology  

Students accepted into the Diesel and Heavy Equipment Technology program at Guilford Technical Community College can expect to obtain the knowledge and training needed to properly troubleshoot, service, and repair medium and heavy duty trucks and equipment. 

In the classroom, students learn the fundamentals of the diesel engine. In the shop, students learn hands-on, how to properly diagnose, repair, and maintain, diesel engines, electronic engines, diesel electrical systems, medium and heavy duty brake systems, suspension and steering systems, climate control systems, and transmissions. Students also acquire hands-on training in preventive maintenance and diesel engine tune-up.

Each student will learn every aspect of diesel engine repair by disassembling, inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and reassembling various diesel engines, using computerized diagnostic machines, measuring devices, tech manuals, wiring diagrams, and hand tools.

Workplace ethics, interpersonal communication, and important time management skills are also learned by students as they work alone and as a team to finish each task assigned to them by their instructors with accuracy, thoroughness, and speed.

The Diesel and Heavy Equipment Technology Diploma

The Diesel and Heavy Equipment Technology Diploma program contains the following industry-relevant courses:

  • Medium/Heavy Duty Tune-Up
  • Electronic Engines
  • Med/Heavy Duty Brake System
  • Med/Heavy Duty Brake System Lab

  • Mechanical Transmissions

Students are also required to take Introduction to Interpersonal Communications, Introduction to Computers, and Math Measurement & Literacy or Quantitative Literacy, in order to meet the 42 credit requirements of the Diesel and Heavy Equipment Technology Diploma program. Students are required to complete each course and maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA, the equivalent of a “C” grade, in order to graduate.

The Diesel and Heavy Equipment Technology Certificate

The Diesel and Heavy Equipment Technology Certificate program is comprised of the following career-focused classes:

  • Intro to Transport Technology
  • Basic Transport Electricity
  • Med/Heavy Duty Brake System
  • Suspension and Steering
  • Preventive Maintenance

Students are required to complete each class and maintain at least a 2.0 GPA, the equivalent of a “C” grade, in order to graduate.

What to Expect After School 

As the diesel industry continues to grow rapidly, job opportunities for qualified diesel mechanics is expected to increase 11% by the year 2020, as fast as average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The mean annual wage for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists working in the United States in 2014 was $45,160, while the mean salary for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists employed in the state of North Carolina was $42,510 yearly and $20.44 hourly, just 5% lower than the national average.

Graduates of the Diesel and Heavy Equipment Technology program at Guilford Technical Community College will be equipped with the skills, education, and training needed to gain employment in the diesel truck and heavy equipment repair industry and can expect to secure an entry-level position as a bus and truck mechanic, farm equipment mechanic, service technician, industrial machinery mechanic, automotive specialty technician, parts specialist, or construction equipment mechanic. 

The Diesel and Heavy Equipment Technology Diploma and Undergraduate Certificate

Guilford Technical Community College offers a 42-week Diesel and Heavy Equipment Technology Diploma. Guilford Technical Community College also offers a 4-month Undergraduate Certificate in Diesel and Heavy Equipment Technology. The Diesel and Heavy Equipment Technology Diploma program is Pell Grant eligible.
