Diesel Maintenance Technician  

The Diesel Maintenance Technician program at Southeast Technical provides students with the technical knowledge and skills necessary to maintain, service, and repair diesel engines in a variety of vehicles and machinery including buses, tractor trailer trucks, diesel power generators, and other related equipment.

Each student will become familiar with diesel engine theory and diesel mechanic terminology in the classroom, while gaining valuable hands-on training on the shop floor, troubleshooting, servicing, and repairing components that form heavy truck and trailer systems. Students watch live demonstrations and learn how to properly use diagnostic equipment, technical manuals, wiring diagrams, instruments, gauges, and hand tools to complete the various tasks assigned to them. Basic welding for diesel maintenance will also be taught.

Each student will learn effective communication, time management, and leadership skills as they work alone and in teams, demonstrating workplace ethics, shop safety, and professional behavior.

The Diesel Maintenance Technician Diploma Program

The curriculum of the Diesel Maintenance Technician Diploma program is designed to educate and train students with job-relevant classes that include:

  • Intro to Electrical & Battery Service
  • Auto Heating & Air Conditioning Theory
  • Introduction to Diesel Technology
  • Diesel Electrical Systems

  • Diesel Preventive Maintenance
  • Diesel Drivetrain Systems
  • Diesel Schematic Interpretation/Electronic Manuals

Students are also required to take general education classes to fulfill the 55 credit requirements of the Diesel Maintenance Technician Diploma program. These classes include English/Communications, Math, Computers: Issues and Applications, and Job Seeking Skills. Students must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0, the equivalent of a “C” grade, and finish every class, to be eligible for graduation.

The Diesel Maintenance Technician Certificate Program

The Diesel Maintenance Technician Certificate program consists of the following career-focused courses:

  • Introduction to Transportation Careers
  • Introduction to DC Electricity
  • Introduction to Diesel Technology
  • Introduction to Hydraulics & Pneumatics
  • Straight Truck Proficiency
  • Welding for Diesel Maintenance

Students are also required to take Computers: Issues and Applications in order to meet the 16 credit hour requirements of the Diesel Maintenance Technician Undergraduate Certificate program. In order to graduate, students must complete every course and maintain at least a 2.0 GPA, the equivalent of a “C” grade.

Diesel Industry Jobs

As the diesel industry continues to grow rapidly, job opportunities for qualified diesel mechanics is expected to increase 11% by the year 2020, as fast as average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The mean annual wage for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists working in the United States in 2014 was $45,160, while the mean salary for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists employed in the state of Minnesota was $45,780 yearly and $22.01 hourly, 1% higher than the national average.

Students who successfully complete the Diesel Maintenance Technician program at Southeast Technical will have the skills and training necessary to secure entry-level employment as a heavy diesel mechanic, truck mechanic, parts manager, service manager, service technician, service writer, fleet technician, lead technician, shop supervisor, or specialty technician.

The Diesel Maintenance Technician Diploma and Undergraduate Certificate

Southeast Technical offers a 56-week Diesel Maintenance Technician Diploma as well as a 9-month Diesel Maintenance Undergraduate Certificate. Both the Diesel Technology Diploma program and the Diesel Maintenance Undergraduate Certificate program are Pell Grant eligible.
