Diesel and Heavy Equipment
The Diesel and Heavy Equipment program at Hibbing Community College provides specialized training, knowledge, and skills for students who desire to learn how to troubleshoot, repair, and adjust diesel engines found in trucks, buses, construction equipment, and earth moving equipment.
Students are taught diesel theory and important safety techniques in the classroom while they learn about heavy equipment systems, and the hydraulics, pneumatics, and electrical systems that are part of the modern day diesel engine.
Students gain valuable hands-on training in a modern equipped diesel shop that includes a fuel injector room and an engine dynanometer. Each student will develop their mechanical skills and technical know-how as they learn how to properly inspect, test, and repair 2-cycle and 4-cycle engines, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, clutches, power transmissions, steering and suspension systems, brakes, and various heavy equipment manufactured by Cummins and Caterpillar.

Students must accumulate at least 65 credits and maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA to be eligible to graduate from the Diesel and Heavy Equipment Diploma program.
What to Expect After College
Students who successfully complete the Diesel and Heavy Equipment program at Hibbing Community College will be prepared for entry-level employment as heavy equipment mechanics working for road construction companies, trucking companies, mining companies, bus lines, and logging and diesel equipment dealerships.
As the diesel industry continues to grow rapidly, job opportunities for qualified diesel mechanics is expected to increase 11% by the year 2020, as fast as average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The mean annual wage for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists working in the United States in 2014 was $45,160, while the mean salary for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists employed in the state of Minnesota was $45,780 yearly and $22.01 hourly, 1% higher than the national average.
The Diesel and Heavy Equipment Diploma
Hibbing Community College offers a 21-month Diesel and Heavy Equipment Diploma with an emphasis in Heavy Equipment Maintenance. This program is Pell Grant eligible.
