Diesel Powered Equipment Technology  

The Diesel Powered Equipment Technology program at Louisiana Delta Community College is designed to prepare students for an exciting career in the diesel power equipment technology industry through specialized training and practical hands-on experience.

Students will be taught diesel theory in the classroom and gain practical hands-on experience in the shop, learning how to diagnose, troubleshoot, repair and service various diesel-powered engine systems using technical manuals, wiring diagrams, computerized diagnostic machines, power tools, and hand tools.

Students will also learn safe and efficient work habits as well as important communication and leadership skills as they work both independently and in groups.

In order to graduate, students must complete each class and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0, the equivalent of a “C” grade.

Occupational Skills and Qualities

Students who successfully complete the Diesel Powered Equipment Technology program at Louisiana Delta Community College will possess the following qualities and skills:

  • Have an in-depth knowledge of the theory of basic diesel-powered equipment systems.
  • Be comfortable servicing and maintaining all kinds of diesel-powered equipment.
  • Be able to select and safely operate the correct hand tools, power tools, jacks, and hoisting equipment for the job.
  • Be highly skilled in diagnosing malfunctions, repairing, and servicing diesel engines, and their various component systems.
  • Be able to demonstrate safe and efficient work practices, and possess basic occupational and employable skills.
What to Expect After Graduation

Graduates of the Diesel Powered Equipment Technology program at Louisiana Delta Community College can expect to secure and hold an entry-level position as a diesel power equipment technician.

As the diesel industry continues to grow rapidly, job opportunities for qualified diesel mechanics is expected to increase 11% by the year 2020, as fast as average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The mean annual wage for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists working in the United States in 2014 was $45,160, while the mean salary for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists employed in the state of Louisiana was $42,910 yearly and $20.63 hourly, just 5% lower than the national average.

The One-Year Technical Diploma

Louisiana Delta Community College offers a 60-week Technical Diploma in Diesel Powered Equipment Technology. This program is Pell Grant eligible.
