Ag Diesel Mechanics  

The Ag Diesel Mechanics program at Hutchinson Community College is designed to educate and train students to become tomorrow’s AGCO certified technicians on tractors, combines, hay equipment, and planters. 

Students learn the fundamentals of the diesel engine, both in the classroom and on the shop floor, as they participate in courses about hay and seeding systems, power unit systems, agri-power, agri-air conditioning, combine operation and repair, transverse and axial combines, agriculture diesel electricity, wheeled tractor systems, agri-power units, complete tractor overhaul, agriculture hydraulic systems, and dealership operations and procedures. Each student will also participate in a field study and conference internship during the Summer semester.

Graduates of the Ag Diesel Mechanics program at Hutchinson Community College can be confident that they have the entry-level skills and technical knowledge for employment as service technicians at independent and joint shops that specialize in the service and repair of agricultural and light industrial equipment

The Ag Diesel Mechanics A.A.S. Degree Program

The curriculum of the Ag Diesel Mechanics Associate Degree program is made up of the following courses:

Students are also required to take 15 credit hours worth of General Education classes in order to fulfill the 68 credit hour requirements of the Associate of Applied Science Degree program. In order to graduate, students must complete every course and maintain at least a 2.0 GPA, the equivalent of a “C” grade.

The Ag Diesel Mechanics Undergraduate Certificate Program

The Ag Diesel Mechanics Undergraduate Certificate program consists of the following core classes:

Students are required to complete every class and maintain at least a 2.0 GPA, the equivalent of a “C” grade, in order to graduate.

Job Outlook

As the diesel industry continues to grow rapidly, job opportunities for qualified diesel mechanics is expected to increase 11% by the year 2020, as fast as average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The mean annual wage for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists working in the United States in 2014 was $45,160, while the mean salary for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists employed in the state of Kansas was $43,490 yearly and $20.91 hourly, just 4% lower than the national average.

The Associate of Applied Science Degree and Undergraduate Certificate

Hutchinson Community College offers a two-year Associate of Applied Science Degree in Ag Diesel Mechanics. Hutchinson Community College also offers a one-year Undergraduate Certificate in Ag Diesel Mechanics. Both programs are Pell Grant eligible.
