Diesel Mechanics
The Diesel Mechanics program at Northeast Iowa Community College is designed to educate and train students in the four competencies of diesel engines, diesel electrical systems, diesel fuel systems, and drive trains.
Through specialized classroom instruction and job-specific hands-on training, students will gain the advanced diagnostic, troubleshooting, maintenance, and problem-solving skills that are absolutely essential to successfully service, maintain, and repair today’s modern diesel-powered equipment.
Classes cover career-specific topics such as automotive tune-up, gas engine principles, gas support systems, diesel engine principles, welding fundamentals, automotive transmissions, diesel support systems, drive trains, brakes, diesel electrical systems, air conditioning, and equipment repair.

In order to graduate, students must complete every course and maintain at least a 2.0 GPA, the equivalent of a “C” grade.
From Education to Occupation
Students who successfully complete the year-long Diesel Mechanics program at Northeast Iowa Community College will be awarded a diploma and will possess the skills and training necessary to become a qualified diesel mechanic in today’s fast-paced ever-changing diesel industry.
As the diesel industry continues to grow rapidly, job opportunities for qualified diesel mechanics is expected to increase 11% by the year 2020, as fast as average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The mean annual wage for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists working in the United States in 2014 was $45,160, while the mean salary for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists employed in the state of Iowa was $39,410 yearly and $18.95 hourly, just 13% lower than the national average.
The One-Year Diesel Mechanics Diploma
Northeast Iowa Community College offers a one-year Diesel Mechanics Diploma. This program is Pell Grant eligible. Certain students may qualify to receive the Kibbie Grant or the Iowa Grant to help supplement the cost of their education.
