Diesel Truck Technology
The Diesel Truck Technology program at Hawkeye Community College helps students to build skills for service, repair, and maintenance procedures on gasoline-powered and diesel-powered trucks, while they become proficient in communication and problem-solving.
Through a mix of general education courses, technical classes, and hands-on training, students learn about the various components that make up the diesel-powered truck, including the diesel engine, diesel fuel system, hydraulics, power train, electrical system, and diesel electronics, as well as the gas engine rebuild and the diesel engine rebuild.
Students work both independently and in teams as they learn how to properly test, service, and repair diesel engine systems using digital diagnostic machines, technical manuals, power tools, and hand tools.
The Diesel Truck Technology Curriculum
The curriculum of the Diesel Truck Technology program consists of the following courses:

In order to graduate, students must complete every course and maintain at least a 2.0 GPA, the equivalent of a “C” grade.
From Graduation to Occupation
Graduates of the Diesel Truck Technology program at Hawkeye Community College will be well-equipped with the training and skills needed to secure an entry-level position in the diesel mechanic profession at local companies such as Altorfer Machinery, Cedar Valley Corp, Don’s Truck Sales, Harrison Truck Center, Hawkeye International Truck, Peterbilt, and Warren Transportation.
As the diesel industry continues to grow rapidly, job opportunities for qualified diesel mechanics is expected to increase 11% by the year 2020, as fast as average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The mean annual wage for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists working in the United States in 2014 was $45,160, while the mean salary for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists employed in the state of Iowa was $39,410 yearly and $18.95 hourly, just 13% lower than the national average.
The Two-Year Associate of Applied Science Degree
Hawkeye Community College offers a two-year Associate of Applied Science Degree in Diesel Truck Technology. This program is Pell Grant eligible. Certain students may qualify to receive the Kibbie Grant or the Iowa Grant to help supplement the cost of their education.
