Agriculture Mechanics Technology  

The Agriculture Mechanics Technology program at Black Hawk College provides a combination of theory and practical hands-on training for students who wish to pursue a career in the agricultural machinery and equipment industry. The Agriculture Mechanics Technology curriculum includes career-specific topics of study such as machinery operation and management, diesel and gasoline engines, electrical systems, computerized control systems, electronic fuel control systems, air conditioning, transmissions, power trains, and hydraulic systems.

Thanks to the mandatory eight-week agriculture equipment dealership and repair business internship program, graduates of the Agriculture Mechanics Technology program at Black Hawk College will have the necessary skills and on-the-job training to become entry-level diesel mechanics, equipment technicians, parts specialists, machinery and equipment salespersons, or service managers in farm machinery dealerships and repair businesses. Students who are interested in the Agriculture Mechanics Technology program are urged to apply as soon as possible since enrollment is limited.

The Agriculture Mechanics Technology A.A.S. Degree Program

The Agriculture Mechanics Technology A.A.S. Degree program consists of the following courses:

To be eligible for graduation, students must finish each course and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0, the equivalent of a “C” grade.

Employment Opportunities

Students who successfully finish the Agriculture Mechanics Technology program at Black Hawk College will be well-equipped with the knowledge, skills, and training needed to succeed as a qualified diesel technician in today’s fast-paced diesel-powered truck and heavy equipment industry.

As the diesel industry continues to grow rapidly, job opportunities for qualified diesel mechanics is expected to increase 11% by the year 2020, as fast as average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The mean annual wage for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists working in the United States in 2014 was $45,160, while the mean salary for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists employed in the state of Illinois was $47,340 yearly and $22.76 hourly, 5% higher than the national average.

The Two-Year Associate in Applied Science Degree 

Black Hawk College offers a two-year Associate in Applied Science Degree in Agriculture Mechanics Technology. This program is Pell Grant eligible.
