Diesel Equipment Technology  

The Diesel Equipment Technology program at South Georgia Technical College consists of a sequence of courses that will prepare students for a successful career in the diesel equipment service and repair profession.

Specialized classroom instruction and job-simulated hands-on training will give students the academic, technical, and professional knowledge and skills that are absolutely essential to successfully service, maintain, and repair today’s modern diesel-powered equipment. Students will gain the knowledge and experience they need through career-specific courses such as Diesel Technology Tools and Safety, Diesel Engines, Diesel Electrical and Electronic Systems, Diesel Truck and Heavy Equipment HVAC Systems, Preventive Maintenance, Truck Steering and Suspension, Truck Brake Systems, Truck Drivetrains, Heavy Equipment Hydraulics, and Off-Road Drivelines.

Each student will learn how to safely and successfully diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain today’s diesel engines and equipment using modern computer diagnostic machines, hand tools, and power tools. 

The Diesel Equipment Technology Diploma Program

The Diesel Equipment Technology Diploma program is made up of the following core classes:

  • Introduction to Diesel Technology, Tools, and Safety
  • Diesel Electrical and Electronic Systems
  • Preventive Maintenance
  • Diesel Engines
  • Diesel Truck and Heavy Equipment HVAC Systems
  • Truck Steering and Suspension Systems
  • Truck Brake Systems
  • Truck Drivetrains
  • Heavy Equipment Hydraulics
  • Off Road Drivelines

Students are also required to take Introduction to Computers, Interpersonal Relations and Professional Development, Fundamentals of English, and Foundations of Mathematics in order to fulfill the minimum 48 credit hour requirements of the Diploma program. In order to graduate, students must finish each course and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0, the equivalent of a “C” grade.

Graduation and Beyond

Graduates of the Diesel Equipment Technology program at South Georgia Technical College will be well-equipped with the knowledge, skills, and training to secure an entry-level job in both the truck service and repair or heavy equipment service and repair industries.

As the diesel industry continues to grow rapidly, job opportunities for qualified diesel mechanics is expected to increase 11% by the year 2020, as fast as average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The mean annual wage for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists working in the United States in 2014 was $45,160, while the mean salary for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists employed in the state of Georgia was $43,170 yearly and $20.75 hourly, just 4% lower than the national average.

The Diesel Equipment Technology Diploma

South Georgia Technical College offers a 55-week Diesel Equipment Technology Diploma. This program is Pell Grant eligible. Certain students may be eligible to receive the HOPE Scholarship Award to help supplement the cost of their education.
