Diesel Equipment Technology  

The Diesel Equipment Technology program at Albany Technical College provides students with the knowledge and training necessary to succeed in the diesel equipment service and repair profession.

Specialized classroom instruction and job-simulated hands-on training will allow each student to develop the academic, technical, and professional knowledge and skills required to secure and hold an entry-level position in the diesel industry. Students will gain valuable knowledge and training in various areas of diesel equipment technology including truck, heavy equipment, marine systems, and emergency power generator repair.

Using computerized diagnostic systems and hand tools, each student will learn how to properly and safely diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair diesel engines, diesel engine systems, and diesel equipment.

The Diesel Equipment Technology Curriculum

The curriculum of the Diesel Equipment Technology program consists of the following courses:

  • Introduction to Diesel Technology, Tools, and Safety 
  • Diesel Electrical and Electronic Systems 
  • Diesel Engines 
  • Diesel Truck and Heavy Equipment HVAC Systems 
  • Preventive Maintenance 
  • Truck Steering and Suspension Systems 
  • Truck Brake Systems 
  • Truck Drivetrains
  • Heavy Equipment Hydraulics 
  • Off Road Drivelines

Students are also required to take Albany Success Course,  Interpersonal Relations and Professional Development, Foundations of Mathematics, and Fundamentals of English I in order to fulfill the 40 credit requirements of the Diploma program. In order to graduate, students must finish each course and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0, the equivalent of a “C” grade.

Career Outlook

As the diesel industry continues to grow rapidly, job opportunities for qualified diesel mechanics is expected to increase 11% by the year 2020, as fast as average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The mean annual wage for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists working in the United States in 2014 was $45,160, while the mean salary for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists employed in the state of Georgia was $43,170 yearly and $20.75 hourly, just 4% lower than the national average.

Graduates of the Diesel Equipment Technology program at Albany Technical College will be well-equipped with the knowledge, skills, and training needed to succeed as a qualified diesel mechanic in today’s rapidly growing truck and diesel industry.

The Diesel Equipment Technology Diploma and Undergraduate Certificate

Albany Technical College offers a one-year diploma in Diesel Equipment Technology, as well as an 8-month Undergraduate Certificate in Diesel Equipment Technology with a Diesel Engine Service Technician concentration. Albany Technical College also offers two 4-month Diesel Equipment Technology Diplomas with an emphasis in Medium/Heavy Truck and Heavy Equipment, respectively. Both the one-year Diesel Equipment Technology Diploma program and the 8-month Undergraduate Certificate program are Pell Grant eligible. Certain students may be eligible to receive the HOPE Scholarship Award to help supplement the cost of their education.
