Diesel Technician Training  

The Diesel Technician Training program at Lincoln Tech provides specialized training, knowledge, and skills for students who desire to learn how to diagnose, repair, and maintain diesel engines and heavy duty trucks and equipment including buses, 18-wheelers, diesel trucks, construction equipment, and more.

Classroom instruction and hands-on training provides each student with the opportunity to build career-specific skills in specialized areas such as diesel engine diagnostics,  heavy duty transmission maintenance and repair, clutches, and hydraulic systems. 

ASE certified and experienced instructors will train each student on how to properly use the manuals, machinery, computers, and tools needed to successfully and safely diagnose and repair diesel engines and equipment. Students will also receive hands-on experience with oxy acetylene torches and metal inert gas (MIG) welders.

Graduates of the Diesel Technician Training program at Lincoln Tech will be well-equipped with the knowledge, skills, and training needed to succeed as a qualified diesel technician in today’s truck and diesel industry.

The Diesel and Truck Technology Curriculum

The Diesel and Truck Technology Diploma program is made up of the following career-specific classes:

  • Driving Your Performance
  • Gasoline Engine Construction and Operation
  • Electrical Systems
  • Air Conditioning and Electrical Accessories
  • Diesel Engines Construction and Operation
  • Diesel Fuel Systems and Tune-Up
  • Heavy Duty Drive Trains
  • Truck Steering and Suspension Systems
  • Air and Hydraulic Brake Systems
  • Truck Electrical and Electronics
  • Welding and Hydraulics
  • Preventive Maintenance
  • Service Shop Procedures

Students are not required to take any general education classes in order to fulfill the 63 credit requirements of the Diesel and Truck Diploma program. Students are required to complete each class and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0, the equivalent of a “C” grade, in order to graduate from the program. Students will receive approximately 636 lecture hours and 924 lab hours for a total of 1,560 clock hours.

The Diesel and Truck Mechanics Curriculum

The Diesel and Truck Mechanics Certificate program contains the following career-focused classes:

  • Driving Your Performance 
  • Electrical Systems  
  • Diesel Engines Construction and Operation
  • Diesel Fuel Systems and Tune-Up 
  • Truck Steering and Suspension Systems
  • Air and Hydraulic Brake Systems 

Students are not required to take any general education classes in order to fulfill the 30 credit hour requirements of the Diesel and Truck Mechanics Certificate program. Students are required to complete each class and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0, the equivalent of a “C” grade, to be eligible to graduate from the program. Students will receive approximately 317 lecture hours and 403 lab hours for a total of 720 clock hours.

Employment Outlook

As the diesel industry continues to grow rapidly, job opportunities for qualified diesel mechanics is expected to increase 11% by the year 2020, as fast as average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The mean annual wage for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists working in the United States in 2014 was $45,160, while the mean salary for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists employed in the state of Connecticut was $54,360 yearly and $26.14 hourly, 20% higher than the national average!

Students who finish the Diesel Engine Mechanics and Repair program at Lincoln Tech will be equipped with the skills, education, and training needed to qualify as entry-level diesel technicians employed by public transportation companies, commercial trucking companies, construction companies, oil and natural gas extraction companies, independent service garages, and on farms and ranches.

The Undergraduate Certificate

Lincoln Tech offers a one-year Undergraduate Certificate in Diesel Technician Training with an emphasis in Diesel and Truck Technology as well as an Undergraduate Certificate in Diesel Technician Training with an emphasis in Diesel & Truck Mechanics. The one-year Undergraduate Certificate program is Pell Grant eligible.
