Diesel Equipment Technology  

The Diesel Equipment Technology program at Santa Rosa Junior College provides advanced entry-level training for students who wish to learn how to troubleshoot and repair diesel engine and equipment systems. Students will learn not only traditional methods of diagnosing and repairing diesel equipment but, will also be trained in using cutting edge computer diagnostic systems that monitor, control, and maintain information related to the equipment.

Through practical hands-on training, students will also learn about mobile hydraulics, mobile electrical and electronic applications, drive trains, chassis systems, braking systems, industrial diesel engines, and other related topics that meet or exceed diesel technician standards set forth by the National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence.

Students who successfully complete the Diesel Equipment Technology program at Santa Rosa Junior College will be equipped to enter the advanced entry-level job field as a qualified diesel equipment service technician in the industrial equipment, transportation, agriculture, or marine diesel industry. The average yearly salary of an entry-level diesel equipment service technician starts at $25,000 – $40,000 and can increase to $60,000 – $70,000 with more experience and a greater skill set.

The Diesel Equipment Technology Associate in Science Degree

The Diesel Equipment Technology Associate in Science Degree program contains the following core classes:

Students are also required to take either Introduction to Information Literacy or Introduction to Information Literacy for Research Projects in order to fulfill the 44.5 credit hour requirements of the Associate in Science Degree program. In order to graduate, students must finish each course and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0, the equivalent of a “C” grade.

The Diesel Equipment Technology Certificate of Achievement program contains the following core classes:

The Diesel Equipment Technology Skills Certificates

Students may also earn up to eight separate Skills Certificates in eight core areas of the Diesel and Equipment Technology program, designed to help students pass the eight separate ASE Certification exams. The eight Skills Certificates are as follows:

  • T1 –  Diesel Engines
  • T2 – Heavy Duty Engines
  • T3 –  Diesel Power Train
  • T4 –  Diesel Chassis
  • T5 –  Heavy Duty Chassis
  • T6 –  Diesel Electrical/Electronics
  • T7 –  Diesel Heating, Ventilation, and Cooling
  • T8 –  Diesel Preventative Maintenance

In order to acquire any of the Skills Certificate, a student must finish each course and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0, the equivalent of a “C” grade.

From Education to Occupation

Graduates of the Diesel and Heavy Equipment Technology program at Santa Rosa Junior College will have the education and training needed to secure an entry-level position as a qualified diesel mechanic in the commercial trucking industry, construction industry, mining industry, logging industry, rail shipping industry, oceanic freight shipping industry, on farms, ranches, and at independent repair shops.

As the diesel industry continues to grow rapidly, job opportunities for qualified diesel mechanics is expected to increase 11% by the year 2020, as fast as average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The mean annual wage for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists working in the United States in 2014 was $45,160, while the mean salary for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists employed in the state of California was $50,570 yearly and $24.31 hourly, 12% higher than the national average.

The Associate in Science Degree and Certificate of Achievement

Santa Rosa Junior College offers a two-year Associate in Science Degree in Diesel Equipment Technology, as well as a 54-week Certificate of Achievement in Diesel Equipment Technology. Students also have the opportunity of earning Skills Certificates in eight core areas of the Diesel and Equipment Technology program. The two-year Associate in Science Degree program and the 54-week Certificate of Achievement program are both Pell Grant eligible. Certain students may qualify for the BOG Fee Waiver to help pay for their education.
