Diesel Mechanics
The Diesel Mechanics program at Pulaski Technical College provides training, knowledge and skills for students who desire to learn how to troubleshoot and repair truck and heavy equipment systems in specialized areas.
Students will receive classroom instruction and hands-on training in tractor/trailer operation, diesel engines, electrical/electronic systems, diesel fuel injection systems, power trains, air conditioning systems, brake systems, servicing road tractors and trailers, and workplace safety.
Students can transfer their credit hours earned in the Diesel Mechanics program towards an Associate in Applied Science degree. Graduates of the Diesel Mechanics program at Pulaski Technical College will be equipped with the basic training needed to secure and hold an entry-level job as a diesel mechanic.
The Diesel Mechanics Course Outline
The Diesel Mechanics program consists of the following courses:
- Tractor/Trailer Operation
- Diesel Fundamentals
- Diesel Engines
- Electrical/Electronic Systems
- Workplace Safety

Students are also required to take 6 credit hours of general education classes in order to fulfill the graduation requirements of the Technical Certificate program. In order to graduate, students must complete each class and maintain at least a 2.0 GPA, the equivalent of a “C” grade.

As the diesel industry continues to grow rapidly, job opportunities for qualified diesel mechanics is expected to increase 11% by the year 2020, as fast as average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The mean annual wage for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists working in the United States in 2014 was $45,160, while the mean salary for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists employed in the state of Arkansas was $37,430 yearly and $17.99 hourly, just 17% lower than the national average.

The One-Year Technical Certificate
Pulaski Technical College offers a one-year Technical Certificate in Diesel Mechanics. This program is Pell Grant eligible.
