Diesel Mechanics  

The Diesel Mechanics program at Shelton State Community College provides training, knowledge and skills for students who desire to learn how to troubleshoot and repair engines manufactured by Caterpillar, Cummins, Detroit Diesel, International, John Deere, and other companies. 

Specialized classroom and laboratory activities provide each student with the opportunity to learn all phases of vehicle systems including transmissions, hydraulics, electrical systems, brakes, and computer controls. Students will also learn how to properly use technical manuals and tools to perform each job through hands-on training. Courses are taught year-round during the day.

Students who complete the Diesel Mechanics program at Shelton State Community College will be equipped with the basic knowledge, skills, and work attitude necessary to secure and hold an entry-level job as an apprentice line mechanic, apprentice brake and suspension mechanic, or apprentice hydraulics mechanic.

Students must also take Orientation to College, Introductory Technical English I or English Composition I, Fundamentals of Oral Communication or Fundamentals of Public Speaking, Introductory Mathematics I or Intermediate College Algebra or Mathematical Applications, and Microcomputer Applications in order to meet the 55 credit hour requirements of the Long-Term Certificate program. Students must complete every class and maintain at least a 2.0 GPA, the equivalent of a “C” grade, in order to graduate.

The Diesel Mechanics Short-Term Certificate Program

The Diesel Mechanics Short-Term Certificate Program contains the following technical courses:

To be eligible to graduate, students are required complete every course and maintain at least a 2.0 GPA, the equivalent of a “C” grade.

The Two-Year Undergraduate and Short-Term Certificates

Shelton State Community College offers a two-year Undergraduate Certificate in Diesel Mechanics. Shelton State Community College also offers a Short-Term Certificate in Diesel Mechanics. The two-year Undergraduate Certificate in Diesel Mechanics is Pell Grant eligible.
