Getting Your CDL in Order to Work for Trucking Companies in Maryland

Maryland trucking companies will only hire applicants who have a Maryland Commercial Drivers License (CDL). To get your CDL, you must first apply for your Maryland Commercial Learners Permit (CLP). You must be at least 18 years of age and pass a CDL general knowledge test to do so.

When you take the general knowledge test for your CDL, you will also usually have the option of testing on the same day to get special endorsements on your license, such as the HazMat, Tank Vehicles, and Doubles and Triples endorsements. These endorsements allow you to legally drive specific commercial vehicles and make you more marketable to the trucking companies in Maryland. You must pass each individual endorsement test in order to receive that particular endorsement.

After you have your CLP, you will need to pass the CDL skills test in order to get your CDL. There are three components to the skills test; a pre-trip inspection, a basic vehicle control test, and an on-road driving test. Your test must be taken in the same class and type of motor vehicle you will be driving once you have earned your CDL. It is important to note that you will need to provide proof of vehicle registration and insurance prior to the beginning of your exam.

What do the trucking companies in Maryland require of their drivers?

To apply for CDL jobs in MD, you will need to meet specific minimum hiring requirements. While it is true that most trucking companies in Maryland have only a few hiring requirements for drivers, each requirement is strictly enforced.

You’ll most likely come across one or more of the following hiring requirements for CDL jobs in MD:

  • Must possess a valid Class A CDL
  • Must be 21 years of age or older
  • No more than 3 accidents within the last 3 years
  • No more than 3 moving violations in the last 3 years
  • Three months or more of current over-the-road (OTR) experience preferred
  • To qualify for a military program, you must have an honorable discharge within the last 36 months

Maryland Truck Driving Salary and Benefits

If you are anxious to get started in a career and make money, going to truck driving school may be an excellent option for you. Truck driving jobs in MD have lucrative salaries and benefits for people who may not be interested in spending a lot of time or money to go to school.

If you are employed by any of the trucking companies in Maryland, you may earn a salary that is higher than the national average for those who drive commercial trucks. In 2016, CDL jobs in MD paid truck drivers between $30,510 and $66,120 annually with the median income being $44,100, according to the United States Department of Labor. Across the U.S., truck drivers earn an average income between $26,900 and $63,100 yearly with a median income of $41,340.

Those employed in truck driving jobs in Maryland can make up to 60 cents per mile (CPM) with a CPM increase if you have a HazMat endorsement. In general, the more experience you have and the more endorsements you gain, the more you can make. Annual salaries between $45,000 and $75,000 are common. Depending on your employer, you may have the opportunity to put more money in your pocket by earning a sign-on, referral, relocation, retention, or safety bonus. Sometimes these bonuses are as much as $10,000 each.

CDL jobs in MD can come with a variety of different perks and benefits including:

Maryland Taxes and Cost of Living

Salary and benefits are usually a top deciding factor for most people when it comes to accepting a job with one of the many Maryland trucking companies located in this state. However, a higher salary in one state does not necessarily mean that you will be able to pocket more money.

Unfortunately, living in Maryland will be more expensive than living in most other states. Maryland has the 5th highest average state and local taxes in America with an average tax rate of 11.87%. The average cost of living for one adult without kids in Maryland before any taxes is $28,780. The same figure for a family consisting of two adults and two kids in Maryland is $74,608.

Keeping tabs on the price of diesel fuel will help you protect your income if you are an owner-operator doing business with trucking companies in Maryland. The national average price for a gallon of diesel fuel as of May 2017 is $2.338, while in Maryland the price is lower at $2.306.

Driving Conditions for Truck Drivers in Maryland

Being a more populated state that borders our nation’s capitol, truck drivers here are bound to experience the frustration of traffic congestion. Not only is this stressful for a driver but it can cause damages to a truck over time.

Additionally, Maryland is often blanketed in white during the winter months. In fact, about 20 inches of snow fall in this state each year. If you work as a truck driver for trucking companies in Maryland, you will need to be prepared to drive on roads that are slick with snow and ice. You may also experience poor visibility, road closures, and be required to follow tire chain laws.

Expected Growth for CDL Jobs in MD

CDL jobs in MD are predicted to have a higher than average rate of growth between 2014 and 2024 by the U.S. Department of Labor. An 11% growth rate is predicted with an additional 540 additional truck driving jobs in MD annually. In comparison, only a 6% growth is predicted for truck driving jobs nationally. This means an additional 40,450 job openings for truck drivers for all 50 states combined.
