Diesel Technology
The Diesel Technology program at the Western Montgomery Career & Technology Center is designed to prepare students to repair, maintain, and service the diesel engines used to power buses, trucks, and heavy equipment. Classroom lectures, computer-based learning, and hands-on training in the laboratory make up the comprehensive curriculum of the Diesel Technology program. Students are also receive preparation for the Pennsylvania State Safety Inspection license exams.
Students are given in-depth lectures on diesel theory and learn the fundamentals of the diesel engine system, including the design, functions, and principles of operation of the diesel engine. Students participate in lively class discussions, study detailed textbooks, and hand in written assignments, developing their critical thinking, reasoning, and problem-solving skills.
In the laboratory, students acquire practical hands-on training, carefully monitored by their instructors, as they learn how to troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair diesel engines, fuel systems, brakes, electrical systems, diesel electronic systems, suspension systems, steering systems, rear differentials, transmissions, hydraulic systems, and mobile air conditioning systems. Students also acquire valuable hands-on experience in preventive maintenance and inspection.
Through the use of modern diagnostic equipment, service manuals, pliers, wrenches, screwdrivers, pneumatic wrenches, gauges, lab scopes, circuit diagrams, and electronic circuit testers, students disassemble, inspect, diagnose, repair, and reassemble a variety of diesel engines and their auxiliary system components, replacing and reconditioning parts in the process, and learning, hands-on, how to properly perform diesel engine overhauls and tune-ups.
Students will also be expected to practice shop safety and effective time management as they complete each task assigned to them by their instructors with proficiency and speed. Professionalism, quality workmanship, and maintaining a positive workplace attitude will also be stressed throughout the Diesel Technology program at the Western Montgomery Career & Technology Center.

As the diesel industry continues to grow rapidly, job opportunities for qualified diesel mechanics is expected to increase 11% by the year 2020, as fast as average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The mean annual wage for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists working in the United States in 2014 was $45,160, while the mean salary for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists employed in the state of Pennsylvania was $42,770 yearly and $20.56 hourly, just 6% lower than the national average.
Students who finish the Diesel Technology program at the Western Montgomery Career & Technology Center will be equipped with the skills, education, and training needed to qualify as entry-level diesel mechanics.
The Two-Year Certificate of Vocational Studies
The Western Montgomery Career & Technology Center offers a two-year Certificate of Vocational Studies in Diesel Technology. Students will also have the opportunity to obtain their Pennsylvania State Safety Inspection license. The Diesel Technology program at the Western Montgomery Career & Technology Center is only available to high school students.
