Diesel/Heavy Equipment Technician
The Diesel/Heavy Equipment Technician program at Chippewa Valley Technical College is designed to prepare individuals to inspect, analyze, and repair heavy-duty trucks and equipment through a combination of classroom lecture and practical hands-on training. Not only do the instructors of the Diesel/Heavy Equipment Technician program have years of trade and teaching experience, they have been certified as Heavy Duty Truck Technicians by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE).
Students learn diesel theory in the classroom while they gain valuable hands-on technical experience inspecting, testing, and servicing diesel engines, brakes, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, electronic systems, drive trains, suspension systems, steering systems, heating systems, and air conditioning systems. Students also learn proper preventive maintenance and inspection procedures for diesel-powered vehicles and heavy equipment.
Each student will obtain practical hands-on experience in diesel engine overhaul and tune-up using service manuals, hand tools, scan tools, power tools, laptops, wiring diagrams, pressure gauges, flow meters, and electrical multi-meters to disassemble, diagnose, repair, and reassemble diesel engines and their integrated auxiliary systems.
Students also develop important interpersonal communication and teamwork skills, as well as analytical, technical, and mechanical skills with every task they are assigned to complete, both independently, and in groups. Proper safety training and practices are also stressed throughout the program.

Students are required to complete every class and maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA, the equivalent of a “C” grade, in order to graduate.
From Graduation to Occupation
Graduates of the Diesel/Heavy Equipment Technician program at Chippewa Valley Technical College will be equipped with the technical knowledge needed to pass the ASE certification exams and state licensure tests, as well as the specialized education and training needed to gain entry-level employment in the transportation industry as qualified diesel/heavy equipment technicians.
As the diesel industry continues to grow rapidly, job opportunities for qualified diesel mechanics is expected to increase 11% by the year 2020, as fast as average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The mean annual wage for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists working in the United States in 2014 was $45,160, while the mean salary for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists employed in the state of Wisconsin was $42,710 yearly and $20.54 hourly, just 5% lower than the national average.
The Two-Year Technical Diploma
Chippewa Valley Technical College offers a two-year Diesel/Heavy Equipment Technician Technical Diploma. This program is Pell Grant eligible.
