Diesel Truck
The Diesel Truck program at Massanutten Technical Center provides high school students with entry-level job skills in the service, maintenance, and repair of diesel trucks. Students will receive instruction in the eight areas of heavy duty truck repair on which the certification exams administered by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) are based.
What to Expect After School
As the diesel industry continues to grow rapidly, job opportunities for qualified diesel mechanics is expected to increase 11% by the year 2020, as fast as average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The mean annual wage for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists working in the United States in 2014 was $45,160, while the mean salary for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists employed in the state of Virginia was $43,200 yearly and $20.77 hourly, just 4% lower than the national average.
Students who successfully complete the Diesel Truck program at Massanutten Technical Center will not only be ready to take the ASE certification exams, they will possess all the basic skills necessary to gain entry-level employment as qualified diesel mechanics working in dealerships, fleet shops, and independent repair shops. Students are encouraged to continue their training by pursuing an Associates Degree in diesel mechanics at a community college.
The Two-Year High School Program
Massanutten Technical Center offers a two-year Diesel Truck program for high school students only.
Areas of Study
The Diesel Truck program focuses on the following areas of study:

- Preventative Maintenance
Students are required to finish each course and maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA, the equivalent of a “C” grade, in order to graduate.
The Diesel Classroom
In the classroom, students are taught such topics as diesel theory and the fundamentals of the diesel engine system including the design, functions, and operating principles of the diesel engine system. Through in-depth lectures, class discussions, and written assignments, students develop strong thinking, reasoning, and communication skills.
The Diesel Lab
In the lab, students acquire valuable hands-on training as they learn how to service, maintain, and repair diesel engines, fuel injection systems, air brakes, power trains, electrical systems, diesel electronic systems, hydraulic systems, and heavy-duty air conditioning systems. Students are also taught how to perform preventive maintenance and inspections. By disassembling, inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and reassembling various diesel engines and their integrated auxiliary systems, using digital diagnostic equipment, wiring diagrams, tech manuals, hand tools, and power tools, students learn how to properly perform diesel engine overhaul.
