Diesel Technician Training
The Diesel Technician Training program at TDDS Technical Institute educates and trains students in all aspects of diesel truck and equipment service and repair, from basic PC operations to heavy duty diesel engine disassembly and inspection to CDL training, TDDS Technical Institute covers it all.
Students are taken through four separate units of classroom instruction and laboratory training, developing important analytical, technical, and mechanical skills as they learn, hands-on, how to properly inspect, assess, and repair, air brake systems, hydraulic brake systems, anti-lock braking systems, power steering and front ends, suspension systems, hydraulic systems, drivelines, clutches, transmissions, drive axles and power dividers, start circuits, charge circuits, chassis wiring, and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. Secondary skills in preventive maintenance, welding, tire and rim servicing, engine timing, tune-ups, PC operations, and CDL training, as well as service consultant & career services, will also be discussed, practiced, and reviewed.
Students train on the most current diagnostic equipment as they diagnose and repair the computerized auxiliary systems found on today’s diesel engines. Tread depth gauges, digital multi-meters, gear wrenches, technical manuals, power tools, hand tools, and wiring diagrams will also be used throughout the program. Each student will get their hands dirty, learning how to perform tune-ups and diesel engine overhaul by disassembling, inspecting, assessing the condition of, repairing, and reassembling diesel engines and their intricate system components.
Students will learn the value of strong communication skills and effective time management, as they work both independently and as a team, to complete each assignment in an orderly and efficient manner. Shop safety, ethics, professionalism, integrity, and a positive workplace attitude will also be stressed. The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) has declared that students who successfully complete the Diesel Technician Training program at TDDS Technical Institute will receive one year of ASE certified work experience that can be put towards the required two years of full-time hands-on work experience necessary to become an ASE certified diesel mechanic.

To be eligible to graduate, each student is required to complete every class and maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA, the equivalent of a “C” grade.
What to Expect After Graduating
Students who successfully complete the Diesel Technician Training program at TDDS Technical Institute will not only be ready to take the ASE certification exams, they will possess all the knowledge and training necessary to gain entry-level employment as qualified diesel mechanics working in dealerships, fleet shops, and independent repair shops.
As the diesel industry continues to grow rapidly, job opportunities for qualified diesel mechanics is expected to increase 11% by the year 2020, as fast as average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The mean annual wage for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists working in the United States in 2014 was $45,160, while the mean salary for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists employed in the state of Ohio was $43,610 yearly and $20.97 hourly, just 3% lower than the national average.
The Two-Year Associate of Applied Science Degree
TDDS Technical Institute offers a two-year Diesel Technician Training Associate of Applied Science Degree. This program is Pell Grant eligible.
