Diesel Technology
The Diesel Technology program at SUNY Cobleskill is accredited by the Associated Equipment Distributors (AED) and teaches students all aspects of diesel and heavy equipment service and repair.
Students learn the fundamentals of the diesel system in the classroom and obtain valuable hands-on training on the shop floor, as they observe the instructor and learn how to troubleshoot, service, and repair, equipment electrical systems, equipment electronic systems, brake systems, steering and suspension systems, power trains, air conditioning and heating systems, fuel systems, and agricultural hydraulic systems.
Each student will learn how to properly test, diagnose, and repair the diesel electronic and mechanical system components of the diesel engine system using computerized diagnostic machines, wiring diagrams, technical manuals, specialized instruments, and hand tools. Students also learn about diesel engine overhaul by disassembling, inspecting, repairing, and reassembling various diesel engines and equipment.
Each student will not only strengthen their mechanical aptitude, they will develop important critical thinking, mathematical problem-solving, and time management skills, as they complete every task assigned to them by their instructors in an efficient, accurate, and timely manner. Ethics, workplace safety, effective oral and written communication, and student teamwork will also be stressed.
The Diesel Technology A.A.S. Degree Program*
The Diesel Technology A.A.S. Degree program consists of the following classes:

Students are also required to take Composition, Principles of Physics I, English 102 or higher, an additional Math/Science Elective, two Major Field Electives, and three Liberal Arts and Science Electives in order to fulfill the minimum 60 credit hour requirements of the Associates in Applied Science Degree program. To be eligible to graduate, each student must finish every class and maintain a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0, the equivalent of a “C” grade.

The curriculum of the John Deere Construction & Forestry Equipment degree track is made up of the following courses:

Students will also be required to take FFCS, PHED, Composition, Principles of Physics I, English 102 or higher, an additional Math/Science Elective, an AGEN Elective, and three Liberal Arts and Science Electives, in order to fulfill the minimum 61 credit hour requirements of the Associates in Applied Science Degree program. In order to graduate, students are required to complete every course and maintain at least a 2.0 GPA, the equivalent of a “C” grade.
From Graduation to Occupation
Graduates of the Diesel Technology program at SUNY Cobleskill will be well-equipped with the knowledge, skills, and training needed to secure entry-level employment in the agricultural, construction, and commercial trucking industries, maintaining and repairing today’s diesel-powered trucks and heavy equipment.
As the diesel industry continues to experience rapid growth, job opportunities for qualified diesel mechanics is expected to increase 11% by the year 2020, as fast as average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In 2014, the mean annual wage for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists working in the United States was $45,160. The mean salary for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists employed in the state of New York was $52,300 annually and $25.14 hourly, 16% higher than the national average.
The Two-Year Associates in Applied Science Degree
SUNY Cobleskill offers a two-year Associates in Applied Science Degree in Diesel Technology. SUNY Cobleskill also offers a two-year Associates in Applied Science Degree in Diesel Technology with an emphasis in John Deere Construction & Forestry Equipment. Both programs are Pell Grant eligible.
