Diesel Equipment Technology
The Diesel Equipment Technology program at Central New Mexico Community College prepares students for a successful career in medium and heavy duty truck and equipment repair.
Students learn diesel equipment theory in the classroom and obtain extensive hands-on training in the lab, using the latest diagnostic equipment and current industry techniques, as they test, service, and repair diesel electrical systems, electronic systems, diesel brake systems, steering and suspension systems, heating and air conditioning, drive trains, clutches, manual shift and automatic transmissions, and hydraulic systems.
By performing tune-ups and overhauls, each student will learn how to properly test, diagnose, and repair diesel engines and their system components. Students will also learn and develop occupational skills in diesel mechanic welding and preventive maintenance.
Students strengthen their problem-solving, technical, and mechanical skills as they complete every task assigned to them by their instructors. Each student will also learn effective communication and leaderships skills while ensuring that shop safety, ethics, and a positive workplace attitude are maintained throughout the program.

Students must demonstrate proficiency in English, Math, and Reading by their scores in the placement exams or through specific course work. Students are also required to take a variety of general education classes that include Mathematics, either Humanities/Fine Arts or Social/Behavioral Science, College Writing 3, either Survey of Applied Technologies or Special Topics, Transportation Technology Capstone, Interpersonal Communication Studies 3, and Computer Concepts and Software Applications in order to fulfill the 69 credit hour requirements of the Associate of Applied Science Degree program. In order to graduate, students must finish each class and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0, the equivalent of a “C” grade.

From Graduation to Occupation
Graduates of the Diesel Equipment Technology program at Central New Mexico Community College will be well-equipped with the knowledge, skills, and training needed to secure employment as an entry-level heavy truck mechanic at fleet companies, truck dealerships, and independent truck repair shops.
As the diesel industry continues to grow rapidly, job opportunities for qualified diesel mechanics is expected to increase 11% by the year 2020, as fast as average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The mean annual wage for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists working in the United States in 2014 was $45,160, while the mean salary for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists employed in the state of New Mexico was $42,100 yearly and $20.24 hourly, just 7% lower than the national average.
The Associate of Applied Science Degree and Undergraduate Certificate
Central New Mexico Community College offers a two-year, five-term Associate of Applied Science Degree in Transportation Technology with a concentration in Diesel Equipment Technology. Central New Mexico Community College also offers a 15-month Undergraduate Certificate in Diesel Equipment Technology. Both programs are Pell Grant eligible.
