Diesel Hydraulics Technology
The Diesel Hydraulics Technology program at Northern Maine Community College is designed to emphasize the National Automotive Technology Education Foundation (NATEF) training standards necessary for a diesel technician to become certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE).
Students learn the fundamental aspects of medium and heavy truck technology in the classroom and in the laboratory as they advance their technical and mechanical skills through valuable hands-on training as they test, service, and repair diesel engines, fuel injection systems, drive trains, suspension systems, steering systems, brakes, automotive air conditioning, and automotive heating systems.
Each student will also learn how to troubleshoot and repair the sophisticated on-board computer systems found on today’s diesel engines using the latest computerized diagnostic equipment, wiring diagrams, power tools, and hand tools.
The Diesel Hydraulics Technology A.A.S. Degree*
The Diesel Hydraulics Technology Associate in Applied Science Degree program is made up of the following core classes:

Students in the Associate in Applied Science Degree program will also be required to take English Composition, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Social Science, Technical Communications, and a Humanities elective. Students must complete each class and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0, the equivalent of a “C” grade, in order to graduate.
Diesel Hydraulics Technology Undergraduate Certificate*
The Diesel Hydraulics Technology Undergraduate Certificate program consists of the following courses:

Students in the Undergraduate Certificate program will also be required to take English Composition and Applied Mathematics. In order to graduate, students must complete each class and maintain at least a 2.0 GPA, the equivalent of a “C” grade.
What to Expect After College
As the diesel industry continues to grow rapidly, job opportunities for qualified diesel mechanics is expected to increase 11% by the year 2020, as fast as average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The mean annual wage for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists working in the United States in 2014 was $45,160, while the mean salary for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists employed in the state of Maine was $39,950 yearly and $19.21 hourly, just 12% lower than the national average (BLS 2017, [https://www.bls.gov/ooh/installation-maintenance-and-repair/diesel-service-technicians-and-mechanics.htm]).
Students who successfully complete the Diesel Hydraulics Technology program at Northern Maine Community College will be eligible for ASE certification. Graduates will be equipped with the technical knowledge and training necessary to secure employment with logging companies, construction companies, agriculture equipment dealers, and heavy equipment dealerships.
The Associate in Applied Science Degree and Undergraduate Certificate
Northern Maine Community College offers a two-year Associate in Applied Science Degree in Diesel Hydraulics Technology. Northern Maine Community College also offers a one-year Undergraduate Certificate in Diesel Hydraulics Technology. Both programs are Pell Grant eligible.
