Diesel Technology
Because the Diesel Technology program at Seward County Community College is ASE certified and accredited by the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation, students can rest assured that they are getting the best diesel mechanic training for their money.
Over the course of two years, students will acquire and develop the technical skills and specialized knowledge needed to properly test, repair, and maintain diesel engines, power trains, and other components of today’s diesel trucks and heavy equipment.
Students receive both comprehensive classroom instruction and practical hands-on training in diesel technology safety, brakes, electrical systems, hydraulics, diesel engines, drive trains, steering and alignment, frames and suspension, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, diagnosis and failure analysis, diesel parts management, and preventive maintenance.
Each student will also learn important computer skills by using the advanced electronic equipment needed to properly diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair the sophisticated computer-controlled engines, transmissions, and electrical systems found in today’s diesel-powered trucks and equipment. All students are required to provide their own basic set of tools upon entering the program. To assist students in their tool selection process, various tool suppliers will be on hand.
The Diesel Technology A.A.S. Degree Program*
The curriculum of the Diesel Technology Associate Degree program consists of the following core classes:

Students must also choose two of the following general education classes:
- English Composition I

Students are also required to take two different Humanities Electives in order to meet the 65 credit hour requirements of the Associate in Applied Science Degree program. Students must complete every class and maintain at least a 2.0 GPA, the equivalent of a “C” grade, in order to graduate.

From College to Career
Students who successfully complete the Diesel Technology program at Seward County Community College will not only have the mechanical skills, specialized knowledge, and technical training needed to service and repair diesel engines, systems, and equipment, but will be qualified to secure and hold an entry-level position as a qualified diesel mechanic in the rapidly growing diesel truck and heavy equipment industry. As the diesel industry continues to grow rapidly, job opportunities for qualified diesel mechanics is expected to increase 11% by the year 2020, as fast as average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The mean annual wage for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists working in the United States in 2014 was $45,160, while the mean salary for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists employed in the state of Kansas was $43,490 yearly and $20.91 hourly, just 4% lower than the national average.
The Associate of Applied Science Degree and Certificate of Completion
Seward County Community College offers a two-year Associate in Applied Science Degree in Diesel Technology. Seward County Community College also offers a 10-month Certificate of Completion in Diesel Technology. Both programs are Pell Grant eligible.
