Diesel Technology
The Diesel Technology program at NCK Tech is a two-year program designed to give students the training, education, and skills they need to properly diagnose, repair, and maintain large diesel trucks and equipment. During the first year of the program, students gain practical classroom instruction in diesel theory and hands-on training in diesel shop equipment and tool safety, basic diesel engines, drive trains, OSHA training, hydraulics, basic electrical and electronic systems, and mobile heating, ventilation and air conditioning.
Second year students learn about diesel shop management, advanced electrical and electronic systems, advanced diesel engines, diesel engine emission, brakes, suspension and steering, alternative fuels, and bio-fuel. During their fourth semester, students can choose to either participate in an internship with a local employer, or take a class in truck and heavy equipment repair. Each student will learn how to properly diagnose, troubleshoot, and make necessary adjustments on diesel engines using hand-held digital diagnostic machines, wiring diagrams, and hand tools. Students also learn how to identify the various electronic controls found on today’s CAT, Cummins, and Detroit Diesel engines.
Students who successfully complete the Diesel Technology program at NCK Tech will be awarded an Associate of Applied Science degree and will be highly qualified to secure and hold an entry-level position as a diesel shop mechanic, line mechanic, field mechanic, product support technician, shop service technician, parts specialist, or service dispatch manager. First-year salaries range from $32,000 to $34,000 annually.

Students are also required to take English Composition I, Fundamentals of Oral Communication, Computer Applications, General Psychology, and either Business Math or Intermediate Algebra or College Algebra in order to fulfill the 68 credit hour requirements of the Associate of Applied Science Degree program. In order to graduate, students must complete every class and maintain at least a 2.0 GPA, the equivalent of a “C” grade.
Industry Outlook
As the diesel industry continues to grow rapidly, job opportunities for qualified diesel mechanics is expected to increase 11% by the year 2020, as fast as average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The mean annual wage for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists working in the United States in 2014 was $45,160, while the mean salary for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists employed in the state of Kansas was $43,490 yearly and $20.91 hourly, just 4% lower than the national average.
The Two-Year Associate of Applied Science Degree
NCK Tech offers a two-year Associate of Applied Science Degree in Diesel Technology. This program is Pell Grant eligible.
