Diesel Technology
The Diesel Technology program at Scott Community College admits students in the Fall and Spring of each year. The curriculum of the Diesel Technology program at Scott Community College is designed according to standards set by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE).
Specialized classroom instruction and job-simulated hands-on training will advance the technical and problem-solving skills of each student as they learn about automotive shop safety, engine repair, heavy duty drive train, hydraulics, automotive electrical and electronic systems, truck electrical systems, diesel fuel systems, diesel engine repair, heavy duty alignment, welding fundamentals, and preventive maintenance. Students will also learn valuable communication, composition, and applied math skills.
Using computerized diagnostic systems, technical manuals, and hand tools, each student will learn how to properly and safely diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair diesel engines, engine components, and diesel equipment donated by companies like Case IH, Caterpillar, Detroit Diesel, John Deere, and more.
Graduates of the Diesel Technology program at Scott Community College are well-prepared to pass the ASE certification exams in seven major categories including Brakes, Diesel Engines, Drive Train, Suspension and Steering, Electrical/Electronic Systems, Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning, and Preventive Maintenance Inspection. Many graduates of the Diesel Technology program at Scott Community College go on to become diesel mechanics at construction companies, automotive dealerships, drive train shops, farm equipment repair shops, and diesel fleet companies.

Students are also required to take Communication Skills, Composition I, either Applied Math Topics or Math for Liberal Arts, and Introduction to Business in order to meet the 68 credit hour requirements of the Associate of Applied Science Degree program. Students must finish each course and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0, the equivalent of a “C” grade, in order to graduate.

The curriculum of the Diesel Technology Diploma program consists of the following classes:

In order to graduate, students must complete each class and maintain at least a 2.0 GPA, the equivalent of a “C” grade.
The Diesel Technology Heavy Duty Train Certificate*
The Diesel Technology Heavy Duty Train program contains the following courses:
- Automotive Shop Safety
- Engine Repair
- Survey of Diesel Technology (optional course)
- Heavy Duty Drive Train I
- Heavy Duty Drive Train II
- Hydraulics
Students are also required to take Communication Skills, Composition I, and either Applied Math Topics or Math for Liberal Arts in order to meet the 19 credit requirements of the Associate of Applied Science Degree program. Students must finish each course and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0, the equivalent of a “C” grade, in order to graduate.
The Diesel Technology Truck Electrical Certificate*
The Diesel Technology Truck Electrical program consists of the following classes:

- Basic Automotive Electricity/Electronics

- Diesel Fuel Systems I
- Diesel Fuel Systems II
- Preventative Maintenance
Students are required to complete every class and maintain at least a 2.0 GPA, the equivalent of a “C” grade, in order to graduate.
Industry Outlook
As the diesel industry continues to grow rapidly, job opportunities for qualified diesel mechanics is expected to increase 11% by the year 2020, as fast as average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The mean annual wage for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists working in the United States in 2014 was $45,160, while the mean salary for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists employed in the state of Iowa was $39,410 yearly and $18.95 hourly, just 13% lower than the national average.
The Associate in Applied Science Degree, Diesel Technology Diploma, and Undergraduate Certificate
Scott Community College offers a two-year Associate in Applied Science Degree in Diesel Technology as well as a one-year Diploma in Diesel Technology. Scott Community College also offers two Diesel Technology Undergraduate Certificates with an emphasis in Heavy Duty Train and Truck Electrical, respectively. Both the Associate in Applied Science Degree program and the Diesel Technology Diploma program are Pell Grant eligible. Certain students may qualify to receive the Kibbie Grant or the Iowa Grant to help supplement the cost of their education.
