Diesel/Clean Diesel Technology
The Diesel/Clean Diesel Technology programs at American River College provides training, knowledge and skills for students who desire to learn how to troubleshoot and repair truck and heavy equipment systems.
Specialized classroom instruction and lab activities provide each student with the opportunity to become proficient in diesel technology, diesel engine repair, basic hydraulic principles used in diesel technology, diesel power trains, and diesel brake systems.
Students will also learn how to properly use technical manuals, laptops, and tools to diagnose, service, and repair diesel engine systems throughout the course with hands-on training. Students who complete the Diesel/Clean Diesel Technology programs at American River College will be equipped with the basic knowledge, skills, and work attitude necessary to secure and hold an entry-level position as a diesel mechanic.
The Diesel Technology Associate in Science Degree Program
The Diesel Technology Associate in Science Degree program consists of the following courses:
- Diesel Preventive Maintenance
- Diesel Engine Repair
- Basic Hydraulic Principles of Diesel Technology
- Diesel Brake Systems
- Diesel Electrical Systems
- Diesel Power Trains
- Clean Diesel Software Support
Students are also required to take general education classes in order to fulfill the 60 credit hour requirements of the Associate in Science Degree program. In order to graduate, students must finish each course and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0, the equivalent of a “C” grade.
The Diesel Technology Undergraduate Certificate Program
The Diesel Technology Undergraduate Certificate program is made up of the following courses:
- Diesel Preventive Maintenance
- Diesel Engine Repair
- Basic Hydraulic Principles of Diesel Technology
- Diesel Brake Systems
- Diesel Electrical Systems
- Diesel Power Trains
Students must finish each course and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0, the equivalent of a “C” grade, in order to graduate.
The Diesel Technology Preventive Maintenance Certificate Program
The Diesel Technology Preventive Maintenance Certificate program consists of the following courses:
- Diesel Technology Basics
- Diesel Preventive Maintenance
- Diesel Engine Repair
Students must finish each course and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0, the equivalent of a “C” grade, in order to graduate.
The Clean Diesel Technology Certificate Program
The Clean Diesel Technology Certificate program contains the following classes:
- Biodiesel Fuel and Fuel Systems
- Clean Diesel Systems
- Clean Diesel Rebuild, Retrofit, Re-Power, Retire
- Diesel Engine Repair
- Clean Diesel Retrofit
- Clean Diesel Software Support
Students are required to complete every class and maintain at least a 2.0 GPA, the equivalent of a “C” grade, in order to graduate.
The Clean Diesel Hybrid Technology Certificate Program
The Clean Diesel Hybrid Technology Certificate program contains the following courses:
- Hybrid Diesel Component Application
- Diesel Hybrid Motor Generators
- Clean Diesel Software Support
- Industrial Software and Systems
In order to graduate, students are required to complete every class and maintain at least a 2.0 GPA, the equivalent of a “C” grade.
The Clean Diesel Management Systems Certificate Program
The Clean Diesel Management Systems Certificate program contains the following courses:
- Hybrid Diesel Power Trains
- Hybrid Diesel High Voltage Systems
- Clean Diesel Software Support
- Industrial Software and Systems
In order to graduate, students are required to complete every class and maintain at least a 2.0 GPA, the equivalent of a “C” grade.
Graduation and Beyond
Graduates of the Diesel Technology and Clean Diesel Technology programs offered at American River College will be equipped with the skills, education, and training needed to secure an entry-level position as a qualified diesel mechanic in either the diesel technology or the clean diesel hybrid technology job field.
As the diesel industry continues to grow rapidly, job opportunities for qualified diesel mechanics is expected to increase 11% by the year 2020, as fast as average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The mean annual wage for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists working in the United States in 2014 was $45,160, while the mean salary for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists employed in the state of California was $50,570 yearly and $24.31 hourly, 12% higher than the national average.
The Associate in Science Degree and Undergraduate Certificate
American River College offers a two-year Associate in Science Degree in Diesel Technology. American River College also offers a 12-month Undergraduate Certificate in Diesel Technology, as well as a 6-month Undergraduate Certificate in Diesel Technology with an emphasis in Preventive Maintenance. American River College also offers a 12-month Undergraduate Certificate in Clean Diesel Technology, as well as a 6-month Undergraduate Certificate in Clean Diesel Hybrid Technology and a 6-month Undergraduate Certificate in Clean Diesel Management Systems. The two-year Associate in Science Degree program and the two 12-month Undergraduate Certificate programs are Pell Grant eligible. Certain students may qualify for the BOG Fee Waiver to help pay for their education.
