Diesel Technology
The Diesel Technology program at Mid-South Community College provides training, knowledge and skills for students who desire to learn how to troubleshoot and repair diesel engines, steering and suspension, brakes, powertrain, electrical systems, and ventilation systems.
Students learn through classroom instruction and hands-on training, using the most up-to-date, industry-relevant tools and equipment.
Graduates of the Diesel Technology program at Mid-South Community College can be confident that they will have the necessary skills and training needed to secure an entry level job as a qualified diesel mechanic. Mid-South Community College has also joined with Montana State University-Northern to offer an on-campus bachelor’s degree in Diesel Technology for those students who wish to take their training to the next level.
The Diesel Technology Technical Certificate Program
The Diesel Technology Technical Certificate program consists of the following courses:
- Preventive Maintenance
- Electrical Systems
- Brake Systems
- Electrical Systems II
- Diesel Engines I
- HVAC Systems
- Steering and Suspension
- Powertrain
- Diesel Engines II
Students are also required to take English Composition I, either Developmental Math III or Applied Technical Math, and College Survival Skills in order to fulfill the 41 credit hour requirements of the Technical Certificate program. In order to graduate, students must finish every course and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0, the equivalent of a “C” grade.
The Diesel Technology Certificate of Proficiency Program
The Diesel Technology Certificate of Proficiency program contains the following classes:
- Preventive Maintenance
- Brake Systems
- Diesel Engines I
- Diesel Engines II
In order to graduate, students must finish each class and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0, the equivalent of a “C” grade.

Students who successfully complete the Diesel Technology program at Mid-South Community College can be confident that they will secure entry-level employment as a professional diesel mechanic, especially since diesel technology job openings often exceed the number of qualified technicians working in the industry today.
As the diesel industry continues to grow rapidly, job opportunities for qualified diesel mechanics is expected to increase 11% by the year 2020, as fast as average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The mean annual wage for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists working in the United States in 2014 was $45,160, while the mean salary for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists employed in the state of Arkansas was $37,430 yearly and $17.99 hourly, just 17% lower than the national average.
The Technical Certificate and Certificate of Proficiency
Mid-South Community College offers a Technical Certificate in Diesel Technology. Mid-South Community College also offers a Certificate of Proficiency in Diesel Technology. The 45-week Technical Certificate program is Pell Grant eligible.
