Diesel Technology
The Diesel Technology program at East Arkansas Community College provides training, knowledge and skills for students who want to learn how to troubleshoot and repair truck and heavy equipment systems.
Specialized classroom and laboratory activities provide each student with the opportunity to learn all phases of repair work on diesel-powered equipment, including basic diesel technology, preventative maintenance, and fleet maintenance. Students will also learn how to properly use technical manuals and tools through hands-on training.
Students who complete the Diesel Technology program at East Arkansas Community College will be prepared to secure and hold an entry-level job as a diesel mechanic in the Diesel Technology field.

The Diesel Technology A.A.S. Program
The Diesel Technology A.A.S. program consists of the following classes:
- Introduction to Diesel Engines
- Biofuels
- Diesel Engine Diagnostics & Repair
- Introduction to Fuel Systems
- Fuels and Lubricants
- Electrical Technology I
- Hydraulics & Pneumatics
- Advanced Diesel Engine Diagnostics & Repair
- Mechanical Devices
Students are also required to take English Composition I, Computer Fundamentals, Mathematical Applications II, either Technical Communications or English Composition II, one Social Science Elective, and two Diesel Technical Electives such as Programming Logic Controllers, Process Instrumentation, Industrial Loss Prevention, or Industrial Safety and OSHA in order to fulfill the 60 credit hour requirements of the Associate of Applied Science Degree program. Students must complete each class and maintain at least a 2.0 GPA, the equivalent of a “C” grade, in order to graduate.
The Technical Certificate Program
The curriculum of the Technical Certificate program contains the following courses:
- Introduction to Diesel Engines
- Introduction to Fuel Systems
- Diesel Engine Diagnostics and Repair
- Advanced Diesel Engine Diagnostics and Repair
- Hydraulics and Pneumatics
- Mechanical Devices
- Fuels and Lubricants
Students are also required to take English Composition I and Computer Fundamentals in order to fulfill the 31 credit hour requirements of the Technical Certificate program. In order to graduate, students must complete each class and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0, the equivalent of a “C” grade.
The Certificate of Proficiency Program
The Certificate of Proficiency program is made up of the following courses:
- Introduction to Diesel Engines
- Diesel Engine Diagnosis & Repair
- Introduction to Fuel Systems
- Advanced Diesel Engine Diagnosis & Repair
In order to graduate, students must complete each class and maintain at least a 2.0 GPA, the equivalent of a “C” grade.
Occupational Outlook
As the diesel industry continues to grow rapidly, job opportunities for qualified diesel mechanics is expected to increase 11% by the year 2020, as fast as average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The mean annual wage for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists working in the United States in 2014 was $45,160, while the mean salary for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists employed in the state of Arkansas was $37,430 yearly and $17.99 hourly, just 17% lower than the national average.
Graduates of the Diesel Technology program at East Arkansas Community College will be equipped with the technical knowledge and specialized skills to secure entry-level employment as qualified diesel mechanics trained in basic diesel technology, preventative maintenance procedures, and fleet maintenance.
The Associate in Applied Science Degree and Undergraduate Certificate
East Arkansas Community College offers a two-year Associate in Applied Science Degree in Diesel Technology. East Arkansas Community College also offers an 8-month Technical Certificate in Diesel Technology as well as a 4-month Certificate of Proficiency in Diesel Technology. The Associate in Applied Science Degree program and the 8-month Technical Certificate program are both Pell Grant eligible.
