Heavy Duty Truck and Bus Mechanics

The Heavy Duty Truck and Bus Mechanics program at the Miami Lakes Educational Center & Technical College provides quality educational training to students who wish to succeed in the truck and bus repair industry. 

Each student of the Heavy Duty Truck and Bus Mechanics program will learn diesel theory in the classroom while gaining hands-on experience in the laboratory as they learn how to properly and safely troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair gas and diesel engines, electrical systems, power train components, and chassis components, as well as learning how to perform routine truck and bus maintenance using the proper hand tools and machinery

The normal length of the program for full-time students is 1800 clock hours or 24 months. Students may enter the program at any time during the designated school year as this is an open-entry, open-exit program but, entrance into the program is based on available class space. 

The Medium and Heavy Duty Truck and Bus Mechanics Curriculum

The Medium and Heavy Duty Truck and Bus Mechanics program centers around the following classes:

  • Diesel Engine Mechanic/Technician Helper (150 clock hours)
  • Diesel Electrical and Electronics Technician (300 clock hours)
  • Diesel Engine Preventative Maintenance Technician (150 clock hours)
  • Diesel Engine Technician (300 clock hours)
  • Diesel Brakes Technician (300 clock hours)
  • Diesel Heating and Air Conditioning Technician (150 clock hours)
  • Diesel Steering and Suspension Technician (150 clock hours)
  • Diesel Drivetrain Technician (150 clock hours)
  • Diesel Hydraulics Technician (150 clock hours)

In order to graduate, students must fulfill the clock hour requirements for each class and maintain at least a 2.0 GPA, the equivalent of a “C” grade.

Entrance Requirements for the Medium and Heavy Duty Truck and Bus Mechanics Program

The requirements for entrance into the Heavy Duty Truck and Bus Mechanics Program are as follows:

  • Applicants must complete and submit the college application.
  • Applicants must be interviewed by the college guidance counselor.
  • Applicants must pass the Reading, Math, and Language assessment tests.
  • Applicants must be at least 16 years of age and not currently attending high school.
From College to Career

Students who successfully complete the Heavy Duty Truck and Bus Mechanics program at the Miami Lakes Educational Center & Technical College will be well-trained and fully prepared to secure and hold an entry-level position in the heavy duty truck and bus, heavy diesel equipment, and industrial engine industries.

As the diesel industry continues to grow rapidly, job opportunities for qualified diesel mechanics is expected to increase 11% by the year 2020, as fast as average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The mean annual wage for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists working in the United States in 2014 was $45,160, while the mean salary for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists employed in the state of Florida was $43,720 yearly and $21.02 hourly, just 3% lower than the national average.

The Undergraduate Certificate 

The Miami Lakes Educational Center & Technical College offers a 72-week Undergraduate Certificate in Medium and Heavy Duty Truck and Bus Mechanics. This program is Pell Grant eligible.
