Medium and Heavy Duty Truck and Bus Technician  

The Medium and Heavy Duty Truck and Bus Technician program at the Bradford-Union Technical Center takes each student through a comprehensive 1800 hour course that includes competency based applied learning, technical skill-building, and logic-based problem solving in the Transportation, Distribution, and Logistics career cluster. 

Through specialized classroom instruction and technical hands-on training, students will gain the knowledge and skills they need to succeed as an entry-level Medium and Heavy Duty Truck and Bus Technician in today’s fast-paced diesel industry. Students will learn how to properly use technical manuals, computers, machinery, and hand tools to complete each occupation-specific task such as diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining diesel engines, electrical systems, reconditioning diesel fuel injection systems, diesel engine overhauling, and diesel engine preventive maintenance. 

Graduates of the Medium and Heavy Duty Truck and Bus Technician program at the Bradford-Union Technical Center will be highly trained and well prepared to secure and hold an entry-level position in various related job fields such as truck repair, power plant maintenance, mobile repair, fleet maintenance, and bus repair.

Areas of Certification

Students of the Medium and Heavy Duty Truck and Bus Technician program will receive certification in the following areas:

  • Diesel Engine Mechanics / Technical Helper – 150 Hours
  • Diesel Electrical / Electronics Technician – 300 Hours
  • Diesel Engine Preventative Maintenance Technician – 150 Hours
  • Diesel Engine Technician – 300 Hours
  • Diesel Brake Technician – 300 Hours
  • Diesel Heat & A/C Technician – 150 Hours
  • Diesel Steer & Suspension – 150 Hours
  • Diesel Drivetrain Technician – 150 Hours
  • Diesel Hydraulic Technician – 150 Hours

In order to graduate, students must finish each course and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0, the equivalent of a “C” grade.

Admission Requirements for the Medium and Heavy Duty Truck and Bus Technician Program

The admission requirements for the Medium and Heavy Duty Truck and Bus Technician program are as follows:

  • Applicants must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Applicants must complete the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) with a minimum score of 9.0 in Reading and Language in order to receive a Certificate of Completion.
Employment Opportunities

Graduates of the Medium and Heavy Duty Truck and Bus Technician program at the Bradford-Union Technical Center will be equipped with the specialized skills, technical education, and mechanical training needed to secure an entry-level position as a medium and heavy duty truck and bus technician.

As the diesel industry continues to grow rapidly, job opportunities for qualified diesel mechanics is expected to increase 11% by the year 2020, as fast as average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The mean annual wage for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists working in the United States in 2014 was $45,160, while the mean salary for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists employed in the state of Florida was $43,720 yearly and $21.02 hourly, just 3% lower than the national average.

The Undergraduate Certificate

The Bradford-Union Technical Center offers an Undergraduate Certificate in Medium and Heavy Duty Truck and Bus Technician. This program is Pell Grant eligible.
