Automotive/Diesel Technology
The Automotive/Diesel Technology program at the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith provides theory and practical skills for students who want to learn how to diagnose, service, and repair diesel engines and vehicle computer systems systems. The University of University of Arkansas-Fort Smith’s Automotive/Diesel Technology program is taught by highly qualified ASE certified instructors with years of experience in the industry who pride themselves on utilizing one-on-one student instruction that is rarely seen at other universities.
Students will receive classroom instruction and hands-on training in specialized areas. Students of the Automotive/Diesel Technology program will learn how to identify vehicle information as well as research vehicle and service information. Students will also learn how to properly use a torque wrench and diagnostic equipment, how to properly use diesel equipment and tools, as well as learning how to obtain and interpret a wiring diagram, properly interpret micrometer and caliper readings, properly and safely operate a hydraulic vehicle lift, and demonstrate proper industry safety guidelines when using diesel equipment and tools.
Students can transfer their credit hours earned in the Automotive/Diesel Technology program towards an Bachelor of Applied Science degree at the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith. Graduates of the Automotive/Diesel Technology program at the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith will not only be equipped with the basic training needed to secure and hold an entry-level job as a diesel mechanic, but will also have the help of the university’s job placement center in finding an internship or industry-related job after graduation.
The Diesel Technology Course Outline
The Automotive/Diesel Technology curriculum consists of the following courses:
- Theory and Maintenance
- Introduction to Diesel Systems
- Braking Systems
- Electrical Systems I
- Electrical Systems II
- Suspension and Steering
- Heating and Air Conditioning Systems
- MIG Welding -Basic
In order to graduate, students must finish each course and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0, the equivalent of a “C” grade.
