Diesel Technology
The Diesel Technology program at the University of Alaska Southeast provides training, knowledge and skills for students who desire to learn how to diagnose and repair mechanical problems associated with all components of diesel-powered heavy duty trucks and equipment. Students experience both classroom instruction and hands-on training in various diesel engine applications that pertain to various diesel industries such as earth moving companies, power generation plants, trucking fleets, airport maintenance, mining companies, tour bus operations, and freight handlers.
Specialized classroom and laboratory activities provide each student with the opportunity to learn all phases of repair work on diesel-powered equipment, such as diagnosing malfunctions, servicing and repairing diesel equipment, and repairing fuel injection systems. Through hands-on training, students learn how to properly use technical manuals, laptops, and tools to perform each job.
Students who complete the Diesel Technology program at the University of Alaska Southeast will be equipped with the basic knowledge, skills, and work attitude necessary to succeed in today’s marketplace.
The Diesel Technology A.A.S. Degree Program
The curriculum of the Diesel Technology A.A.S. Degree program consists of the following courses:

Students may also be required to take a variety of general education courses in order to fulfill the graduation requirements of the Associate of Applied Science Degree program. In order to graduate, students must complete each course and maintain at least a 2.0 GPA, the equivalent of a “C” grade.

The mean annual wage for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists working in the United States in 2014 was $45,160, while the mean salary for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists employed in the state of Alaska was $59,080 yearly and $28.41 hourly, an astounding 30% higher than the national average!
The Associate of Applied Science Degree and Undergraduate Certificate
The University of Alaska Southeast offers a two-year Associate of Applied Science Degree in Diesel Technology. The University of Alaska Southeast also offers a 9-month Undergraduate Certificate in Marine Diesel Technology and a 9-month Undergraduate Certificate in Diesel/Heavy Duty Mechanics. All three programs are Pell Grant eligible.
