Getting Your CDL in Order to Work for Trucking Companies in Utah

You are legally required to obtain your Commercial Drivers License (CDL), to be employed in truck driving jobs in Utah. The first step to getting your CDL is getting a Utah Commercial Learners Permit (CLP). In order to do so, you’ll have to pass a 50 question multiple choice written exam with a score of 80% or higher.

It is important to note that you must be at least 18 years old to apply for a CLP. However, if you intend to apply for CDL jobs in Utah that require interstate driving, transporting passengers, or hauling hazardous materials, you will need to be at least 21 years of age.

There is no mandatory waiting period to take the CDL Road Test once you have your CLP. However, you will need to make an appointment as walk-ins are not accepted. Be sure to arrive on time with your own insured commercial vehicle. The vehicle must be the same commercial class as the vehicle you will be operating once you obtain your CDL. This a hands-on test that will require you to drive in various situations and locations to prove you are fit to have a commercial driver’s license.

After passing the CDL Road Test and meeting other requirements, you will be granted your CDL. Your next step is to apply for truck driving jobs in Utah.

What do the trucking companies in Utah require of their drivers?

Utah trucking companies must abide by state laws and regulations set forth by the Department of Transportation (DOT). For these reasons, those applying for trucking jobs in Utah must meet strict hiring requirements. These requirements will vary between companies, however, many are the same.

Some common hiring requirements you may come across include:

  • Must be at least 21 years old
  • Must have a valid Class A CDL
  • Must pass a DOT physical and a drug screening
  • Recent over-the-road (OTR) experience is preferred
  • Must have a safe driving record with no serious traffic violations or patterns of irresponsible driving

Utah Truck Driving Salary and Benefits

No matter how much you might enjoy your job with the trucking companies in Utah, salary will probably be a key factor when deciding what jobs to apply for and which jobs to accept.

The trucking companies in Utah pay their truck drivers about the same or slightly less than the national average for this career field. As of 2016, truck driving jobs in Utah paid truck drivers between $25,500 and $61,170 per year, with the median income of a truck or tractor-trailer driver being $42,920. Nationally, truck drivers will make between $26,900 and $63,140 annually with a median income of $41,340, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

As a truck driver working for Utah trucking companies, you have the potential to earn up to $80,000 per year. In addition to your annual salary, you can earn bonuses for safety and performance, referring other truck drivers, and relocating. These bonuses are usually between $1,000 and $10,000.

Benefits offered by the trucking companies in Utah include:

  • A compensation review every 6 months
  • Frequent home time
  • Plenty of miles
  • Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP)
  • Full benefits
  • 401(k) retirement plan
  • Paid vacation
  • Open-door management policy
  • Satellite tracking
  • FREE iPass in select locations
  • Quarterly safety awards
  • Orientation pay (with company-paid transportation, lodging, and meals)
  • A prescription drug card beginning the 1st of the month after 2 months of employment

Utah Taxes and Cost of Living

The cost of living can be used to help determine what type of salary you need and how you should budget your wages. These expenses are different in each state. Before applying for any type of CDL jobs in Utah, you may want to research what the cost of living is for your family size.

Out of all 50 states and our nation’s capital, Utah ranks #12 for the lowest county and state taxes with a rate of 9.25%. Typical living expenses in Utah for one adult with no dependents are $22,412 before standard wage deductions. For a household with two adults and two dependents, the typical living expenses are $65,341.

The national average price for a gallon of diesel fuel as of June 2017 is $2.376, while in Utah the price is significantly higher at $2.523. If you become an owner-operator contracting with various trucking companies in Utah, you will need to pay your own fuel expenses. Tracking the cost of fuel and how much you pay will become an important business practice for you. However, if you are employed in truck driving jobs in Utah, your employer will pay this expense.

Driving Conditions for Truck Drivers in Utah

When it comes to working for Utah trucking companies the biggest problem you will probably experience will be winter driving conditions. Although Utah has world-renowned skiing, all of that snow can have a downside for those who frequently travel on the roads in this state.

You should feel comfortable navigating roads that are covered in thick ice, several inches of snow, and even heavy fog. You will need to carry chains for your tires and be prepared for potential delays during winter driving conditions. If you decide to become a flatbed driver, be aware that you will have to work outside in the cold, covering your cargo with tarps and strapping everything down securely with ties.

One thing to keep in mind is that parts of Utah are dessert. Here you will likely face much higher temperatures and fuel stations that are few and far between. Be sure that your rig has plenty of fuel and make sure you store extra water and coolant, especially during the summer months, if you’ll be embarking across these hot, dry, and sparsely populated areas.

In addition, you may deal with congested traffic, especially if you are operating near Salt Lake City or Moab. It’s a well-known fact that weather conditions and congested roadways can increase the wear-and-tear on your truck and cause an increase in job-related stress.

Expected Growth for Truck Driving Jobs in Utah

Between 2014 and 2024, the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts an astoundingly high rate of growth for truck driving jobs in Utah, in comparison with the same job in other states. In fact, Utah is expected to see a 29% growth rate with an additional 960 job openings each year. Across the United States, jobs for people driving heavy and tractor-trailers are expected to grow by 40,450 between 2014 and 2024, which represents a 6% growth overall.
