Getting Your CDL in Order to Work for Trucking Companies in Oregon

Prior to applying for jobs with trucking companies in Oregon, you will need an Oregon  Commercial Drivers License (CDL). The first step to getting your CDL is applying for your Oregon Commercial Learners Permit (CLP). To do so, you will need to have one year of driving experience and be at least 18 years of age. You will also need to pass a written CDL test.

Once you have obtained your CLP, you can take the CDL road test. Passing this test demonstrates that you have the skills and knowledge that are necessary of drivers who work for Oregon trucking companies.

The first part of this test is the Pre-Trip Inspection that tests your knowledge of commercial vehicle safety. If your vehicle is not safe to drive on public roads, you may not continue the exam.

Next, you will take the Basic Controls Test. You will be required to perform certain off-road maneuvers such as backing up, moving forward, and being able to turn within a certain amount of space.

If you pass both of the aforementioned portions, you can then move onto the Road Skills Test. You will demonstrate your knowledge and skills with your commercial vehicle on public roads. You may be required to parallel park, perform straight line backing, or certain other maneuvers. You will also be tested on driving skills such as stopping, braking, and starting.

When you pass this test and all other requirements, you will receive your CDL and be on your way to applying for a truck driving position with the trucking companies in Oregon.

What do the trucking companies in Oregon require of their drivers?

All truck driving jobs in Oregon require their applicants to meet specific qualifications, known commonly as hiring requirements. Some of these requirements are in place to make sure that local and state traffic and roadway laws are observed. Above all, these requirements ensure safety on the road.

When applying for a job with Oregon trucking companies, you may encounter one or more of the following criteria:

  • Must hold a Class A CDL
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • No DUIs in the last 3 years
  • No more than 3 moving violations in the past 3 years
  • No pending criminal charges or active reporting probation
  • Must be willing to be teamed up with another driver (if applicable)

Oregon Truck Driving Salary and Benefits

Truck driving jobs in Oregon can be rewarding and satisfying, yet you are probably wondering how much you could be compensated when working in such a position.

The trucking companies in Oregon are about average when it comes to compensation for their employees. As reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2016, trucking jobs in Oregon usually provided truck drivers with an annual wage between $31,760 and $59,570 with a median income of $43,210. In comparison, across America, truck drivers earn an average income between $26,900 and $63,100 annually with a median income of $41,340.

Trucking companies in Oregon report their solo truck driver salaries to be between 38 and 53 cents per mile based on experience and other factors. Owner-operators can earn up to $150,000 per year and employed truck drivers can earn around $80,000 annually.

Oregon Taxes and Cost of Living

The cost of living and state and local taxes should be considered in conjunction with your salary and benefits before you accept any offers for truck driving jobs in Oregon. Taking your earnings and general expenses into account will help you make the best decision for your future.

Oregon ranks 11th for the lowest average state and local taxes with an average state and local tax rate of 9.22%. However, this state does have a higher cost of living than some other states. Before any taxes, the average cost of living for one adult without kids is $24,749. For a household with two adults and two kids, the pre-tax average cost of living is $69,323.

The national average price for a gallon of diesel fuel is $2.371, as of May 2017. While in Oregon the price is significantly higher at $2.73. The price of gasoline is a major factor you will need to consider if you decide to become an owner-operator doing business with trucking companies in Oregon. This is because owner-operators must pay for their own fuel and other work related expenses.

Driving Conditions for Truck Drivers in Oregon

Truck driving jobs in Oregon and other states can be challenging for many different reasons. One of these reasons can be traffic and road conditions. However, the good news is, as a truck driver in Oregon, you work in a state where these challenges are at a minimum.

Oregon only receives a few inches of snowfall each year during the winter. In addition, congested roadways are rare, unless you are traveling in a metropolitan area like Portland.

Many drivers who are employed by trucking companies in Oregon find themselves working in the logging industry. This type of trucking job can be hazardous since it requires the drivers to operate their rigs in mountainous areas. If you plan on pursuing this type of truck driving job, be prepared to drive up steep inclines and down long winding roads, all at high altitudes. Be prepared to operate your rig on slick muddy roads as well.

Of course, all of these factors can increase the need for maintenance and repairs on your vehicle. This type of hazardous work environment can also be mentally and physically taxing on you, the truck driver.

Expected Growth for Truck Driving Jobs in Oregon

The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts a higher than average rate of growth for truck driving jobs in Oregon between 2014 and 2024. In fact, Oregon trucking companies will double their hiring rate when compared to the national average. A 12% growth is expected in this state, which equates to almost 3,000 additional trucking jobs in Oregon over this time period. For the U.S. as a whole, a 6% growth rate is expected for trucking jobs between 2014 and 2024 with an additional 40,450 job openings for truck drivers in total.
