Diesel Power Technology  

The Diesel Power Technology program at the Sno-Isle Tech Skills Center is designed to prepare students for an entry-level position as a qualified diesel mechanic repairing and maintaining diesel powered trucks, heavy equipment, boats, and power generators. Many students who finish the program choose to continue their educational pursuits at the Universal Technical Institute (UTI), WyoTech, or at one of the many local community colleges that offer courses in Diesel Power Technology.

The curriculum of the Diesel Power Technology program has been updated to stay relevant with the recent environmental regulation changes in the Diesel Power Technology industry, such as the addition of bio and renewable fuels, green diesel energy, and other technological advances. 

In the classroom, students learn diesel theory, as well as the dynamics, purpose, and principles of operation of the diesel engine system. In-depth lectures, class projects, topical discussions, and written assignments help each student to develop the critical communication, computation, and comprehension skills every diesel mechanic needs in order to succeed in today’s rapidly changing diesel industry.  

In the laboratory, students learn the diesel trade practices currently in use today, obtaining verbal instruction and hands-on training, on how to properly and safely troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair, diesel engines, power trains, brakes, fuel systems, suspension and steering systems, electrical systems, electronic systems, hydraulic systems, and mobile HVAC systems. 

Students will learn all aspects of diesel engine overhaul by disassembling, inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and reassembling various diesel engines and their integrated system components, using digital diagnostic equipment, precision measuring instruments, shop manuals, wiring schematics, electronic volt meters, power tools, and hand tools.

Every student will learn the value of teamwork and time management, working together and independently, to complete every assignment given to them by their instructors in an efficient and timely manner. Shop courtesy, shop safety, professionalism, and ethics in the workplace will also be stressed. 

Job Outlook

As the diesel industry continues to grow rapidly, job opportunities for qualified diesel mechanics is expected to increase 11% by the year 2020, as fast as average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The mean annual wage for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists working in the United States in 2014 was $45,160, while the mean salary for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists employed in the state of Washington was $53,570 yearly and $25.75 hourly, 19% higher than the national average.

Students who successfully complete the Diesel Power Technology program at the Sno-Isle Tech Skills Center will possess all the basic skills necessary to gain entry-level employment as qualified diesel mechanics working in dealerships, fleet shops, and independent repair shops.

The Two-Year Program

The Sno-Isle Tech Skills Center offers a two-year program in Diesel Power Technology. This program is open to high school students only.
