Basic Diesel Maintenance Certificate*
The Basic Diesel Maintenance Certificate program at Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College provides students with the academic skills and specialized training needed to become qualified diesel maintenance technicians, servicing, repairing, and maintaining diesel trucks and equipment.
In the classroom, students receive lectures on basic diesel engine theory, participating in discussions about the purpose, design, and principles of operation of the diesel engine. Students also develop strong comprehension and computation skills, as they practice solving contemporary mathematical equations related to the diesel maintenance occupation.
In the training facility, students observe instructor-led demonstrations and receive hands-on training on how to properly inspect equipment, diagnose and repair problems, and perform proper maintenance on diesel engines, diesel-powered equipment, diesel electrical systems, and drive trains, using computerized diagnostic machines, service manuals, power tools, and hand tools.
Each student will learn the value of teamwork and effective time management while developing strong communication skills, as they work alone and in groups, to complete the assignments given to them by their instructors proficiently and accurately.
The Basic Diesel Maintenance Certificate
The curriculum of the Basic Diesel Maintenance Certificate program consists of the following job-specific courses:
- Diesel Engines I
- Diesel Equipment Service and Diagnosis
- Diesel Drive Trains
- Electrical Systems I
Students are also required to take Contemporary Mathematics. In order to graduate from the program, students must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0, the equivalent of a “C” grade.

The mean annual wage for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists working in the United States in 2014 was $45,160, while the mean salary for bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists employed in the state of South Carolina was $39,870 yearly and $19.17 hourly, just 12% lower than the national average.
